Disney starts to cut away at Marvel

So you make the number 1 and number 2 superhero movies of the summer at the box office, the 3rd and 4th 2011 films at Disney. Bringing in 760 million dollars. Thanks, you’re fired!

Of course they are going after the feature film department. Taking over the Avengers and Iron Man 3. However there have been rumblings that the publishing part is under pressure to perform. This is the start of Marvel becoming absorbed into the gelatinous blob that is Disney.

No reason to be too worried yet. Disney cut a redundant infrastructure wing of an acquired company. It happens all the time, and it’s one of the efficiencies that you get from being bought by a larger company. Sucks for the guys who don’t have a job any more, but for the company? Probably not much impact.

As far as pressure on the publication wing, I’m not sure they have to worry too much. Genre directors and writers love love love comic books because it gives you a place to pilot your dumbass idea with an unlimited effects budget for a comparatively low cost. Hopefully, that means we’ll get some more original stuff (along Vertigo lines) out of Icon/Max.
