And I use the word ‘discount’ with the caveat that this is Matrix Games, so any price cut will be minimal.

So now to play the latest expansion (why bother with the other ones?) it will only cost, what? $120? That will be one expensive expansion.

I’m sure they will have to throw bundle discount together for the existing game and expansions. Surely they have to realise that $120 is too steep an entry point for those new customers the latest expansion will potentially bring to the series.

This is the same company that is selling the POS Pride of Nations for $5 more than it originally cost when it came out more than a year ago.

Well, remember that Matrix’s core business has always been selling serious wargames to grognards, and that’s a pretty niche market. Without Matrix, we just wouldn’t have games like “War in the Pacific: Admirals’ Edition”, which I’ve played for hundreds of hours. WITP is priced pretty steeply because, with its overwhelming detail and steep learning curve, it’s just not going to sell as briskly as Diablo 3 or Bioshock or whatever. Me, I’m glad to play a premium to support small developers who make these niche games. (And no, I don’t work for Matrix. And, by the way, I enjoyed Pride of Nations, even with its annoyances; I don’t regret the purchase at all.)

Distant Worlds is something of a departure for Matrix because it has such mainstream crossover appeal. But even DW is the work of a small developer, and I’m happy to support his/their efforts.

I’d maybe pick up this game if it were A) on Steam or B) on sale. I get the niche thing but they could maybe move beyond that a little if trying the game out as a new player didn’t involve kicking my wallet in the balls.

So I finally dove into Shadows today and holy crap, the pirate stuff is FANTASTIC. Totally changes the way the game is played, enough that I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. It’s almost the opposite of traditional 4X gameplay. Rather than mine minerals or create colonies, you smuggle or raid other pirates and colonies for minerals and take over colonies by force. It’s really fuuuuun.

Stop bumping this thread until it’s out!!! :)

Hahahahaha, nope, too excited. I hope to have my preview up within a week.

Okay, you have convinced me. You may send me your preview copy now. :)

You’ll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands Jiminy.

I have learned that I am not a very good pirate.

Role play, Brian. Think like a sociopath/physcopath.

I do not know if I can. I typically never play pirates in space games unless that’s like, the only option.

It is a very different playstyle - even within pirates, the four different styles play differently. If you want a more peaceful pirate, play as a Smuggler and focus on building a mining and trade empire. Smuggling ships also spread your influence/control to planets they supply without the need for raids and military ships.

I’m actually trying that next, as my games as a raider and a merc aren’t…going well for me. ;)

Just a tip, Brian. I you are playing anything like Captain Feathersword the friendly pirate, you’re doing it wrong.

Nah, more like Captain Shakespeare from Stardust.

They have names for people who bring Captain Feathersword into a thread, and none of them are good…!

Just a quick note to Erik, on your codeforce site, the links to slitherine.com in your last couple of news updates are wrong, you have an extra ‘.’ in the www. info, so you get a dead link.

And does this mean we might see Distant Worlds on Slitherine at some point? Or are you still tied in with Matrix exclusively?
