Having fun, going to play a lot over the holiday weekend.
My advisors are… interesting. “Sir! I know you have -4000 credits, but we should totally build 20,000 credits worth of ships!”

So it has an accurate model of US defense spending policies? :)

At least there’s a pattern behind the insanity, the advisors always were like that. Hardly in the green, and they suggest a gazillion more ships be built.
Actually, I think that’s one of the main criticisms I still have for the game - economy. It’s kinda like in GalCiv, in that there are some numbers that constantly fluctuate and never add up and sometimes things you do improve the situation, whilst sometimes doing the same things has no effect whatsoever or even makes things worse. So I tend to just kinda let it flow, with the occasional stone thrown in to try and stir things up a bit, hopefully for the better.
You might consider this state of affairs realistic, and maybe it is - especially with the entire private sector simulation going on - but improving playability it is not.
Already had the expansion in my cart and was going to check out … but I couldn’t find my credit card. Ah well, I’ll order it soon enough.

OK that us worth keeping in mind. Just discovered DW runs on my Iconia W510 tablet which is that very resolution.
EDIT: Server must be getting hammered. 8hrs to download!

Is there a way to stop automated ships from flying off on raids of their own? I wouldn’t mind as much if they’d group up first so they’d have a chance of actually overcoming a hostile fleet and completing a raid successfully, but it seems they’re perfectly happy flying into the teeth of the enemy one by one, letting themselves be captured and further straining my already flagging economy.
For those having resolution issues, you can actually play in a window at custom resolution by modifying an ini file:

You have to edit the startup.ini file in the Distant Worlds folder. Remove this ’ see below.
'Distant Worlds startup settings
screenwidth 1024
screenheight 768
'hyperdrivespeed 1.6
Huh, I’ve not run into this.
Have you looked through your automation settings? IIRC there’s one that lets the AI conduct raids and maybe you might just need to turn that off or set it to suggest.
So anyone have any starting tips for smugglers yet?
I only had a bit to play last night, but my initial strategy didn’t seem to work out. I started with building a couple destroyers, a couple mining ships, and a few freighters. I was hoping the freighters would help me pull on more money from smuggling faster, but after only about 10 minutes of game a local empire hit my base pretty hard and crippled me.
So is the strategy then to start by building up as much of a fleet as possible and only then expanding your other ships? It’s just hard to know what to build since after my initial stocks are exhausted I’ve no idea when I’ll have access to those materials again.
I really like that pirates feel like a completely different game than playing an empire, but boy it’s a lot harder to start out without a huge homeworld to bankroll your fleet expansion. :P
Fwiw, folks on the DW forum are reporting odd behavior by smuggler ships that the player owns, mainly not following orders. The designer is asking for save games to check those reports. So patching may be imminent.
FYI we have a new hotfix up mainly to address a few remaining issues where Shadows was not detecting some processor cores correctly due to a Windows bug which could cause a crash. Also includes some other improvements. If it addresses that rare crash, we will go ahead and make this an official update before the weekend.

Being able to start as a pre-warp empire is making Distant Worlds click for me. Loving it so far.

Yup, same here. I always felt a little overwhelmed in my games. Starting from scratch allows me to ease into the game like never before. Love it!
Yeah, that smaller, more intimate scale in the beginning just works really well.
I bought distant worlds like a billion years ago. Did any of the patches ever do anything with regards to font scaling? Every time I try to get into one of these games I end up having to bump the resolution way down from my native 1920x1200 just to make things readable, which in turn makes everything a blurry mess.
I know, first world problems, har har. But I swear all these indie developers are either 16 years old with 20/10 vision or are still running on 1024x768 crt monitors.
From what I’ve read, not really. :/
The bottom left UI window scales now to 2X with a button click on the UI. I think Erik has hinted that he’s going to work on all the UI widgets to help with that issue.
So, I started a pre-warp race…(finally researched colonization!!)…
Anyways, I had about 20k cash on hand…the pirates that are my overmasters, attempt to sell me info on where an independant colony is located, for $20k. Right at that moment, my cash on hand drops from about 20k all the way to -20k. What in the world just happened? I never accepted the offer from the pirates, and even if I did, my cash on hand dropped double the amount that they were asking for…AND…it dropped before I even clicked on accept or decline.
So, now, all of a sudden, I am way in the red, and I cannot figure out why or how it happened…
oh, and pre-warp is exactly what I needed to start to understand how to play this game…starting very small like that helps.
Is ship building set to automate? They might’ve purchased a buncha ships. Other than that, no clue. :(
