I have always wondered how people get $30,000 in credit card debt when they are single and don’t own a home.
Now I know.
I feel like I am watching the heroin addict who promises this will be his last hit, just one more for the road.

I was wondering the same thing. Holy shit Jason, STOP BUYING STUFF.
You quickly dismissed the 17-inch 1280x1024 monitor, but have you ever stared at a 15-inch 1600x1200 screen? Hello large fonts, hello screwed up menus.[/quote]
Very true. However, Jason mentioned using the laptop in hotels. If airplane use is also contemplated, the 17-inch models are completely impractical unless you’re always upgraded to first class. There’s simply no room to maneuver the thing if someone large is sitting next to you in coach (and just try stuffing the oversize case under the seat). And on a regional jet fugedaboudit.
Also, that short battery life. On a long flight, unless you’re sitting near a power source, that’s not of much use. I finally came to the realization that for my travel needs, which are simply e-mail, PowerPoint and Word, that a small ultra-lite would make a lot more sense, so our firm bought a Dell 300m (yes, Dell again). No, the 12-inch screen is not much good for gaming. But, to be honest, by the time I get back to the hotel after a day on the road, how much gaming do I actually feel like doing? And, besides, I’m old. My shoulder blesses the 300m’s less than 3 lb. weight every time I walk through the airport, and my back blesses it’s small size whenever I don’t have to do contortions to fish the thing out on the plane.
Paid for college on 'em.

Carryover from another thread. How do you buy a house when you have $30,000 in credit card debt (with any hope of ever paying it off)?
Hey, that config looks very similar, our laptops will practically be twinkies!
{Grail Knight} He chose poorly. {/Grail Knight}
1: Have a lot of income and no other expenses (single, young, dork).
2. In increasing order of risk:
2a: FHA 5% down loan with PMI.
2b: 100% financing, paying only closing costs.
2c: 103% financing where closing costs are rolled in.
2d: God help us, they offer interest only loans.

Talk about being mortgaged to the hilt! Good luck, Jason!
Hey Jason so other than the weight, how do you like the 300m? I’m thinking about getting one.

I like it a lot — for what we bought it for. Presentations and writing up meeting notes (and accessing e-mail in the hotel room). For those limited functions, it’s great. Let’s face it, any PC will do for throwing up a presentation on a projector. You can even use handheld’s for that now. But I sometimes have to edit presentations on the fly, and a handheld still won’t do for that… so the ultra-lite 300m is the next best thing. The 12-inch screen would not do for formal or complex documents, but for just writing up notes, who cares? The battery life is great. Fully charged a four-hour flight from Chicago to Reno was no problem – actual use was probably 2 and 1/2 hours during the flight. It’s been perfectly reliable, and you just can’t beat the weight and size for luggability.
Huh, looks like no one else spoke up for the tablet, so I will:
I really like mine :-)
I commute, and using it in tablet mode is unbeatable for catching up on my RSS feeds or reading Acrobat documents. (Or filing my email with the pen.)
3D isn’t important to me in a laptop, and the additional options I have with the tablet aren’t things I’d like to do without. Basically, the extra tablet features are well worth the extra price, in my opinion.
Cheers!

Hmm… Jason admits to having an impressive level of credit card debt, and then a guy named “RepoMan” advises him to buy the more expensive notebook. Watch out, Bat-fans!
RepoMan must be his supervillian name!
“Repo man’s always intense.”
Old school! Been my handle for years now. It dates me. That’s fine!
Cheers!

Delivered today. It’s fucking sweet.
The 1920x1200 widescreen looks gorgeous at 120 DPI.
It runs thief 3 at 1280x1024 with all the settings turned up without a hickup. Haven’t played with AA yet though.
Only downside is that it’s kind of heavy. I’ll live. :D
Good, now you can come over and play games! I wanna see this monster some time. SO ENVIOUS.
