The kids and I thought no one could possibly replace Tennant…

… until 5min into the Matt Smith season. No one could possibly replace Smith.

:O

haven’t started season 4 yet, it was a game night for me, and I caught up on the golden globes.

Damn right.

Don’t read this if you haven’t watched all of Tennant’s episodes

Especially when they brought her back for her thankless role in the Season 4 (Donna) finale. Rose wasn’t the only former companion that they totally screwed up in that two parter.

Less than great story exits for companions has been something of a long-running problem for Doctor Who. For many, their journey’s end is poorly tacked on the end of a story.

Probably the worst was poor Dodo Chaplet, one of the 1st Doctor’s companions, who completely disappears halfway through the 4 episode story, only for the Doctor to be told that she had suddenly decided to stay in London at the end of it by his new companions.

So I am on the 2nd episode of Season 4, and Donna is pretty awesome. :)

Oohhhh, it gets so much better. ;)

So I watched all 7 seasons in the past two months (on recommendation of Garry Newell on nerdist podcast, thanks Garry!)

Pretty good show.
My favourite doctor - still Tennant, although Smith is really awesome especially in sixth and seventh season

My favourite companion - still Rose, although I liked them all. Pond and Rory took some time to get to like. Worst thing about them was that just when I really started to love them, they got done away with :(

My favourite episodes - Dalek, Empty Child, New Earth, Impossible Planet, Gridlock, Girl in a fireplace, Blink, Midnight, Waters of Mars, Lets Kill Hitler, Angels take Manhattan

I become more impressed with Midnight every time I watch it. It’s written like a play, and it’s so simple and elegant. Just subtle and brilliant and insidious.

Oooh this has me very excited, I am only a few episodes from that one, currently watching the Library one.

And by the way, I’m with you: Donna is my absolute favorite!

That season 4 ending! Holy mackerels! :O

I was crying like a little girl that had her pony taken away. :|

…So I have 4 specials left to watch, then I will finally be done with thread crapping the wrong doctor in the Eleventh doctor thread!

I am gonna miss Tennant sooooooooooooo much. :(

That’s what I thought… until Matt Smith came along.

Tennant was my 2nd favorite Doctor of all time and I swore no one could have replaced him but in just a few episodes, Matt Smith did.

It’s not that Smith does a better job -Tennant was excellent - just that Smith seems to incorporate what I loved about Tennant and previous Doctors and yet it’s still a fresh interpretation with the manic energy and child-like enthusiasm he brings to the role.

I just wish the stories were as strong as they were during the Tennant/Eccleston years and I thought Amy/Rory were some of the weakest companions yet (though they had some good moments).

My favorite would have to be the very underrated Christopher Eccleston though. Used to be Tom Baker.

Me too, over what happened to Donna. A really awful ending to an amazing companion.

Totally agreed. Smith is awesome.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. Donna’s ending was epic and beautiful and wonderful. Donna is the best companion, and her ending is the best ending.

I think we have a lot of love to Eccleston because he was our first ‘new’ doctor. He showed us that the Doctor could be even more energetic than Pertwee was when he was at the helm (I’m very fond of Peter Davison, but I think Pertwee did more action than he did.) I really think the love Eccleston got was because he did chose to get out early, and before he got thrown in stories that might have lowered our opinions.

IMO the only fault with Rose (and Martha) was how overwrought it all got. The basic “take a chav, imbue brains, turn into love affair with immortal, snuff out brutally” thing worked extremely well on all sorts of levels, as far as I’m concerned. The show just got mired in it instead of moving on. But hey, it eventually recovered.

Actually I missed out on the Eccleston series first time around and got back into the show with Tenant. Didn’t see an Eccleston episode until after I’d seen the entire Tennant run AND the first season of Smith.

But some of my favorite episodes (Father’s Day, The Empty Child, The Doctor Dances) were from Eccleston’s run. Though you’re right, he had a nice short, perfect run. I love Smith, but the last season was disappointing and I didn’t like the Xmas special.

Damn was The Waters of Mars intense , and that ending! D:

2 more specials and then THE 11th DOCTOR.

Ohhh, that last special is…well…it’s somethin’…
