Why do I have an erection?
If we’re skewing older here, I’d vote for Emma Thompson; she can handle both gravitas and comedy pretty well.

OMG - my wife would explode
This is awesome. I’ve only really seen him in comedies, but I bet he’s got the range for it.
I’d definitely like to see them skew older now–we’ve had too many young preppy frenetic doctors in a row. John Hurt would be awesome, but I know he’s only in for a one-off. Elba would look great in the role. Hell, I’d love to see somebody like Judy Dench step in to it for a while, that would rock. Total return to first doctor vibe. Not sure how I feel about a female Doctor in general, though–it really changes the dynamic of the character in ways that have never been explored, I’m just not sure if that is a good or a bad thing.
Elba would obviously be amazing but, equally obviously, there is not a chance in hell. Oh well.

Finally caught up to the ending. Agree with most of the folks here - it was a ‘meh’ season except for the original xmas episode, dalek asylum and the ending (the ending was awesome, though the intro of Hurt confused me until I read the past page or two here - the Valeyard meant nothing to me (I’m a new Whosian) and I apparently missed the bit about the 9th doctor being wiped from history). A shame, because Clara is a great character and deserved much better shows.
My kids and I have watched from Eccelston on. However, my wife has only seen S7 part 2 so the whole bit with Riversong at the end was lost on her, which is a horrible shame. Does anyone have a link to a list of ‘must watch’ episodes from the Tennant seasons? We’re not going to go back to the start and rewatching it all, but I really want to have her see the important stuff (I’m defining important stuff as all Weeping Angels and all Riversong episodes from Tennant, plus the ‘really good’ episodes like the French clockwork robots one). You can see from my description here why I need help creating such a list - my memory is too spotty. We’ll absolutely do the whole Amy/Rory seasons, cause they were great and we liked the Silence storyline. And Sacred Bob. And Stormaggedon.
Curiously enough, I have exactly such a list! Actually, I think this list may lean more towards episodes that stand well on their own rather than episodes that are important to the continuity but it’s a good starting point at least:
Season 2, Episode 2: Tooth and Claw
Season 2, Episode 4: The Girl in the Fireplace
Season 2, Episode 8: The Impossible Planet
Season 2, Episode 9: The Satan Pit
Season 3, Episode 7: 42
Season 3, Episode 8: Human Nature
Season 3, Episode 9: The Family of Blood
Season 3, Episode 10: Blink
Season 4, Episode 2: The Fires of Pompeii
Season 4, Episode 3: Planet of the Ood
Season 4, Episode 6: The Doctor’s Daughter
Season 4, Episode 8: Silence in the Library
Season 4, Episode 9: Forest of the Dead
Season 4, Episode 10: Midnight
Season 4, Episode 16: Waters of Mars

Thank you sir! You list the ones that I knew needed to be in my particular list, so I’m going to trust all the others as well :) That helps a ton!
Man I hope the rumors that 90 of the missing 106 episodes have been found is true. The other 16 are pretty much assured lost – but getting back the rest, wow.
Michael K. Williams would be better.
‘Doctor comin’
Y’all ain’t got fish fingers and custard?
The next Doctor is being revealed on Sunday. The current hot rumor is Peter Capaldi(!)
That would be fuckity incredible.
I don’t know who Peter Capaldi is , but damn he looks crazy awesome!

Bwahaha, that’s hilarious.
Though I admit I was rather taken by the idea of Sue Perkins, and I wasn’t even terribly taken with the idea of a female Doctor.
Whatever, it can’t be worse than Rocky Dennis, though I’m sure Moffat will give the good old college try to make it so.
It’s Capaldi! What a great choice.
If you watch the Torchwood mini series The Children Of The Earth, you’ll get to see him in a great role in a related universe. It’s a standalone 5 episodes series and worth watching (the only Torchwood really worth watching so far).

Also, (since it is being pointed out elsewhere) Peter Capaldi played the W.H.O. Doctor in World War Z. :)
This news pleases me, I am glad they went the older route, should bring less companion infatuation. And hopefully more seriousness.
