I’d help you out Dave, but I just don’t have the time; turns so far into the game always take more than 20 minutes for me…
Yah, if you have 150 air gems to spare, plus another 270 for the items and spells you recommend.
You only need the wrathful skies loadout if you are going to be facing an actual army in my (fairly limited) experience with Caelum. It is kind of a waste of gems when they could instead just fly wherever they want to.
I don’t either. That kind of recipe exchange is usually what threatens to turn a cool newbie/intermediate game into a race for the munchkin. I’m looking forward to Dom3, which will hopefully level out the knowledge disparity between players. For a week or two.
Wow - I go away for 4 days and all hell breaks loose. Oddly enough, I seem to be fresh out of advice on how to defeat Vine Ogres :)
Perhaps he realized that you were getting a lot more out of the bargain (the freedom to tackle your opposition one at a time instead of all at once). Or maybe he realized he could just take them without paying…
Regarding the NAP issue: by design, we’re playing this game with some folks who do not play in the “regular” games, so its hard to expect everyone to understand the “regular” conventions. Plus, nearly all “conventional” NAPs are 3 turns. If someone offered me a 5-turn NAP I’d ask, but I’d be expecting to hear that the proposer meant a fixed-length agreement. Regardless, there are no real rules about NAPs, so its always safest to spell out what you mean.
To Man, regarding toads, I truly haven’t the foggiest idea what you are talking about. Marignon is not know for Nature mages or income, so even if I had mage time to spare on minor harrassment, that wouldn’t be how it would happen.

Turn 50: C’tis
After a few weeks of down time due to summer traveling, the players are all back at home. Well, Man and Marignon aren’t. They are all up in my face.
It seems that research has ground to a halt across the map as everyone commits all resources to the various battlefronts. Armies continue to be made up solely of national troops and low/mid-level summons. Magic artifacts, when found, are actually precious.
In short, this Dom2 game is excellent!
Man’s smallish Vine Ogre advance guard continues to nibble at my provinces while my main army studies Marignon’s main army across a bloody border. For now, it seems convenient for me to stay put and hope my bigger revenue and faster research can gain me an advantage. Who will blink first?
In the northeast, Jotunheim’s kingdom is all crazy looking. Several provinces are controlled by independents, and the rest are shared–randomly, it appears–by Ulm, Marignon, and Jotunheim. No stories are coming out of those wartorn lands.

I’d be interested in hearing what happened to Jotunheim as well.
Last i heard of them, 20+ turns ago, was that i was running around with literally the last scraps of my empire trying to do the scorched-earth tactics. By sheer dumb luck i managed to attack and penetrate his province defences around my (former) capital (i suspect 1 additional turn of combat would have caused my army to fail it’s morale check, retreat, and literally lose my game).
After that we agreed not to attack one another again, and that i would be in possession of my former territories. I haven’t heard from him since. “No stories are coming out of those wartorn lands” is a fitting description to the decline of the Jotunheim empire.
What happened to him was that flaming crossbow bolts and incineration spells were a perfect counter for those giants that caused you so much trouble. After whacking his army down, I’ve kept at least a couple of spies in his capital full time, so he’s never had enough money to rebuild.
Unfortunately for me - Pythium had the right counters for my crossbowmen…
So many counters for so many different situations - that is what is so cool about Dominions. Except when its MY army being countered, dammit!
Yep my one trick pony failed miserably against Marignon. Basically I am all but dead, my empire near-destitute, my remaining provinces slowly being eaten up by random events that I cant even counter… cursed unluck!!

Come into the light that is Man! Luck and Growth can all be yours if only you give up belief in your false gods.
Come an’ git me, poltroon! I should have finished you when I had the chance… then your rich green lands would be MIIINE!! :D

Hmm. I am somewhat taken aback by C’tis hordes. Damn me for telling him what to do earlier on! Especially as Man has weak priests. Relief, btw, is the DEVIL.
I do have some tricks up my sleeves however. :)
Is he using skeleton spam? Skeleton spam is a tough strat to overcome… usually you need some super aoe spells and/or battlefield magic to prevail. Elemental spam also beats skeleton spam. Also artillery spells to target the squishy mages helps.
No I’m not using “skeleton spam”!!! Also, you should shut up with all of your “ideas”!!!
Each skeleton summoned is given a plot of land to farm and a pile of bones to fashion into a spouse once his service is over. Marignon bones.
Those game settings we’ve been singing the praises of sure tip the balance way in favor of the skellie spammer. No wonder Dave likes the settings so much :)
My strong Marignonian priests were able to dispatch all the undead he brought with him, but were nowhere near enough to deal with the unending stream of unlife.
I didn’t start summoning skeletons until someone in this thread suggested that that is a good strategy for C’tis. Which sort of makes me sad to do it. :( I’d agree to stop doing it, really, if I had, like, any other units at this point!
How do you spam elementals with a gem cost?
Ah well, you don’t of course…
I’m too used to playing mods I guess.
Totally valid strategy IMHO. It’s hard to beat, but certainly not an “I win” button. There are downsides to it as well of course… like those mages could be researching instead of fighting.
How does one catch Marignon spies on one’s capital city? I did a lot of patrolling, but caught nary a one. And it appears that there are about 6 of them. Is patrolling the way to catch spies? (I just want to make sure there’s not something else I’m supposed to be doing.)
