Yeah, they suck. Might I suggest elephants combined with wingless… usually at a ratio of 1:4? You need the wingless (or some other high morale troop, possibly independent) to counter the elephants’ atrocious morale.
Also, I’m finding that metric tons of high seraphs are quite effective, provided you’ve researched evocation levels 4 or 5.
I looked yesterday and Tien Chi hadn’t played his turn, and the forcehosting is still turned off.

Actually the forms seem to think that going for alteration and 6 spamming the crud out of flase horror is the way to go. 5 casters spamming this will break almost any army composed of recruitable units.
Others think that going evocation is the way to go.
Or you can go for frozen heart ( can’t remember the path/level ) that could break people quickly.
I personally would go for False Horror. It really works.

As Nreleth the terrible looked across the frozen planes at the vast army, his casters asked for his word. “Fireballs? Release the dread thing that shall not be named? Groundstrike? How should they put together the perfect combination of spells and power that would counter the enemy forces?”
“Spam false horrors!”

The biggest problem is that there are so many ways to destroy large armies of recruitable troops(spam false horrors, SCs, wrathful skies, etc) that after turn 40 you’ll never see a large army of recruitable troops. It really saps the character of each empire because everybody runs to whatever combination of summoned leaders and magic items allows for your chosen strategy. By turn 40, there are only 3 empires: underwater, land, and undead.
Oh so true. The only variations tend to be in terms of national magics. Blood heavy magics field the SC ice devils first, Death heavy nations field the Bane Lords/Wraith Lords first, Air nation go for the Air Queens, etc.
But yes, when the national mages are the ONLY thing you look at when picking a nation then something is a tad broken in the game methinks.
So… just when things are starting to get interesting in Worldwar and I have a couple of fairly large, powerful national troop armies, I’ll soon to get watch them be devoured by a lone SC? Depressing.

I think that’s overstating the case. In JM-Hardcore we’re at turn 70-something and there is still definitely a place for armies - just to take and hold provinces at the very least. You can put more armies in the field than you can SCs. You just have to be aware of the possible SC tactics you might be facing and be prepared to counter (or avoid) them.
SCs cannot seige castles.
Holy moly, I’d never noticed that spell before. Flying ethereal? Much like the black knight, I’d be INVINCIBLE! Well, until I ran into something with magical weapons.
Do you know if they can fly during a storm?
As for normal units becoming obsolete, I dunno about the other races, but Caelum’s Storm Warriors are useful right through to the end of the game. All the other troops… not so much.

WorldWar- Not to get all Nick Walter gamesmany on the forum, but C’Tis is throwing around Wraith Lords like they cost 10 gems. He’s also had Mother Oak up for 5-10 turns now. An army of national troops just gives the Soul Vortex something to eat.
There are a handful of national troops(Vans, Hydras, etc.) that remain useful till the end, but they are few and far between.
Horrors are one of the few units in the game that can fly during a storm if I recall correctly.
At least, Doom Horrors are. I’m betting that applies to the false ones as well.

Yep. You can add storms to the list of things that do not in any way slow down horrors.

If I remember correctly yes they fly during storms.
OH and BTW, 5 casters spamming false horrors ( note: caelum can cast quickness 1st, this really helps the spam gain mass ) will not break all recruitable armies, just almost all. There are some that will chown down on the false horrors, but in general recruitable armies have a hard time with them.
but C’Tis is throwing around Wraith Lords like they cost 10 gems.
Hey isn’t their a leader that does cost 10 gems and is almost as good ah the bane lord. Got to love them!
Caelum’s Storm Warriors are useful right through to the end of the game.
Well they are cute and all. But make sure that they don’t slow you down recruiting your excellent casters. Those things are amazing even if you don’t like casting False Horrors for some reason.
Those Storm Warriors are great for scattering around the battlefield to slow down the enemy so that your Seraphs ( and High Seraphs ) can do the heavy lifting. It really is amazing how much hurting those casters can put out with just a little research.

Qt3-JM-Hardcore (Vanheim) - C’tis has gone computer this turn. That can’t be good. I’ve been madly building artifact weapons and assorted magical trinkets to have some decent fighters whenever Abysia/Caelum finally turn south. My elven smiths would make Thingol proud.
There beryl, pearl, and opal pale,
and metal wrought like fishes’ mail,
Buckler and corslet, axe and sword,
and shining spears were laid in hoard.
Still missing the “maiden once in Elfinesse” but I figure we’ll just make do without little Luthien for now. The Dark Lord (Lady?) beneath the Smouldercone aka Thangorodrim hasn’t stolen any Silmarils, so I wouldn’t know where to use her anyway.
I don’t think they have much choice but to go through Man at this point; their main armies seem to be in C’tis, and to get to me would have to walk all the way back around to the other side of the map to reach the strait where we border. Even with flying troops it’s a long march. Either way I still have some time.
Been spending a lot of time figuring and refiguring gem costs to properly invade Atlantis. I’ve been avoiding facing up to this - I hate fighting underwater with land troops - but it’s gotta be done and it’s gotta be done soon.

I think you only think that because nobody happens to be using them on our half of the map. You fought me and Brandon, neither of whom are very adept with the magic system and certainly neither of whom has any experience building a good SC. If you’re fighting experienced players, like Backov or Nick, you’ll find the game dominated by SCs. There’s no reasonable counter to them except for another SC and/or a leader specifically built and kitted to take down the SC. It’s true that SCs can’t siege castles, but that’s the only (as far as I can tell) use armies have in an advanced game–to come siege the castle after the SC has done all the real fighting.
Just to back up Rywill, the back and forth between me and the Hasslmaster right before I gave up was all fully equipped SC’s. We both had big armies of Vine Ogres too, but we didn’t field them because one Wraith Lord can eat 100 Vine Ogres a fight.
If you go fight the Danubian Fox, you’ll meet Wriath Lords with the full gear, and at least one Air Queen with full gear who uses Summon Storm/Wrathful Skies in addition to being a combat monster. Don’t forget the Moloch too :D

Yeah, I just watched another “one guy takes out a whole army” wrathful skies event in the Qt3NoobAran game. Nick was on the losing end of it. It wasn’t a supercombatant this time, it was a Man spellcaster (hero I assume).

All right, since it seems informed opinion is unanimously against me, I’ll assert that you’re all wrong and just not thinking about this right, and furthermore that I’m going to win JM-Hardcore primarily through the use of regular infantry.
So there.

Backov-Cradle (Arcoscephale): I am abysmally dumb, and likely to end up being responsible for the end of the world as we know it. You know, with living people and civilization and whatnot. Meanwhile, Ulm continues to suffer the fate of the buxom female in the cheap zombie flick. I need a dude with a chainsaw and a shotgun.
You make it sound like that’s a bad thing :)
I staled last turn, so I have no idea what happened. Did we collide over an indy province?
Also, my mother oak is used solely for energy generation projects. The nature gems it produces are not weapons-grade material.
Bad news on two fronts:
QT3NoobAran (Pythium): I’m out of this game. GG Ulm and Man.
QT3WorldWar (Tien Chi): I think Caelum has adopted the Bush philosophy of preemptive attack; BTW, I have no WMD’s. I’m probaby going to be gone here in a few turns

In your defense, if I recall correctly you took over for another player that quit and left you in a pretty bad position. I thought you lasted for a pretty long time considering how far behind the curve you were when you started.
