Qt3Worldwar (Marignon): Out of this one very soon. Time to start a new game.
LESSON TO THE NEWBIES: Always have a mid-end game “uber strategy”… If you don’t, you will always, ALWAYS be beaten. This has happenned in every one of my games where I had no clear strategy, just was trying something new. The only games I have been successful is when I came in with a coherent strategy.
That’s close to how I structure things. I prefer to have 3 plans. An early game plan, a mid-game plan, and a late-game plan. Early game plans involve national troops, minimal research, and maybe a really tough pretender. Mid-game plans can involve blood magic, firing squads of mages, summoned BALUTs, summoned nasty troops, and some overland magic support. Late game plans usually involve globals, high powered summons or armies entirely of summons+mages, domes, and nasty battlefield magic.
But the “uber strategy” only comes with experience. You really need a good understanding of the end game to formulate an overall strategy, particularly with regards to high level spells, items, and summoned critters.
I’m sorta feeling my way around in Worldwar and learning at the same time but I’m starting to see the “uber strategies” of others coming to fruition and it can be a rather humbling (and frustrating!) lesson. But I must say, I’ve learned a lot in this game and I’m happy for being the whipping boy. Gotta pay your dues…
qt3jm-rainbow(ermor): this setting is really perfect for soulgate ermor. Although I made a serious mistake while choosing my pretender(magic3 dominion instead of drain 1), although all three of my neighbours attacked and declared war on me, I´m doing good.
Half the hall of fame wields my flag, my immortal wraith centurions can eat armies on their own and luck3 provides me with a decent income.
I sent out peace offers to my neighbours, so far they seem to be intent on pushing more wraith centurions into the hall of fame ;).
qt3aranwars(pythium): I´m winning vs jotunheim, but even though I beat him badly, I´m losing troops as well and my research suffers. Even worse I wanted to finally storm one of his castles and forgot to change the barbarians guard commander order. So my farstrikers stood in the front and my barbarians did nothing at the back of the battlefield.
magic3 dominion instead of drain 1
Do you really think that the net +2 MR bonus when fighting in your dominion is worth the research penalty? I find that Ermor’s researchers cost a bucketload and I need ( want? ) all of the research I can get my hands on.

I must thank Rywill for talking me up so effectively. It’s nice to be eliminated out of a game by four players when you’re basically sucking wind. Thanks Rywill!
That brings me down to one game, which I think is more than I want at the moment.
Oh, btw - Rywill is actually the uber master. Destroy him or regret it!
Well since it´s turn 17 and I have one whole magic level researched(because my lone dusk elder is busy summoning wraith centurions and my pretender has to fight all the time) and the biggest weakness of my freespawns is banishment, I clearly should have spent those 160 points better. Besides there is not much to research with a better RoI than summoning those wraithcenturions and it is a game with very hard research sttings, so going for a research strategy isn´t that appealing.
Your comparison is a tad off. It’s not +2 MR vs research penalty. It’s +2 MR and a lot of design points vs a research penalty.
There is no research penalty to skull mentors for taking drain, and that’s how I usually accomplish my research with AE or SG Ermor anyway, so I usually prefer the drain scale to protect from banishment and to give me extra points for my uber-pretender.

But … but … Death gems are for killzoring not for researching! :) But seriously they are for like killing stuff. They have so many great applications unlike say fire gems and those cheap lanterns.
and to give me extra points for my uber-pretender.
You need more than 690 points on your pretender?! I mean sure more is always better, but jeeze. I mean after: turmoil-3, sloth-3, cold/heat-3, death-3, luck-3, magic-3 you have a bucketfull ( 690 ) points to spend. That is a lot of points.

Well I conceed the point. If you are so hard pressed that you can not research at all then the magic scale is totally useless to you. I wish you well in that game it sounds very unplesant.
All research costs death gems to undead Ermor. Spectators and Dusk Elders aren’t free. In terms of research gained per death gem spent, a group of spectators (or even better spectres) with skull mentors is more efficient than the same amount of gems spent on just spectators.
Besides, I usually stick a little earth magic on my uber pretender so he/she can build a dwarven hammer or three. Skull mentors are an even better deal when you can get them at a discount.
The only real pain of golng with skull mentors for Ermor is the requirement to rush Construction-4 early on, probably with your pretender. I consider that a minor nuisance but it is a nuisance.
Am I hallucinating, or is this thread really 65 pages with 33,000 views?
:)
Hey Backov, what game are you talking about?

No problem–I’m here to help. Now that you and Le Puma have your reputations etched in stone, I’m free to use my mediocre Dom2 skills to rule the world.
Now go home and get your f*cking shine box!

QT3 Backov Cradle: I would just like to bring up to everyone’s attention that Nick Walter (Ermor) has THREE globals up. Death Gem, Water Gem, and Eyes of God. Now i’m not bring (bright! =proved) but unless we ALL combine against him NOW we WILL lose. Arco, we should start dispelling those globals together - hopefully by now you have some good astral income.
Umm, no, you confused some of the dark colored flags. I have 2 globals up, Well of Misery and Eyes of God. Someone else (Ulm maybe) has the third global.

Doesn’t make a difference because:
1 - You’re Ermor
2 - You’re Le Puma
3 - You’re coming off a 4 or 5 on 1 victory as Ermor
4 - You’re Ermor
:)
You need to be Backov’ed!
Qt3 World War (Mictlan) - I stale turned while I was away in Seattle this weekend. Can anyone, mainly Marignon or Pangea, let me know what happened last turn? I don’t need military secrets, just a general idea of how the siege is going.

Backov-Cradle (Arco): What VegasRobb said. In addition to being Le Puma playing Ermor, he’s been expanding and building castles the entire game, meeting nothing but some token resistance from Ulm (who apparently fought like a girl). I’ve been playing under the assumption that the game belongs to Ermor anyway. If I can manage to beat up on Pangaea a little while fighting off my AI neighbor, I’ll consider that a win.
Oh, and either this game has really low magic site frequency or I’ve had terrible luck because my gem income sucks.
Qt3WorldWar (C’tis): My little show of military power apparently convinced Marignon to go AI. I feel kinda bad about that :(
Hey! Maybe it was my little show of military power that convinced him to go AI! Which was it? 40 screaming slaves and a heliogolapogus can be pretty scary.
