Call of Winds is actually a very versatile spell. In addition to paratrooping into enemy province, you can also use it to get free of upkeep movement 3 flying commander, to ferry your movement 3 troops, or to bring gems and misc items quickly to the front line. Call of winds also makes great patrollers to catch enemy spies. They are also good defenders and attackers in castle siege as far as breaking/repairing walls concerned (better than regular infantry), and better gem-wise than siege items.
Although none of this helps with mammoths, true.

With Call of the Winds?
Absolutely will not work. The birds will all rout in no time and you’ll waste the gems. You’d have to use multiple Imprint Souls and Horde From Hell, maybe some undead summons too, in order to have troops that will fight hard enough to make their way through the PD. Which is way too expensive in gems. You’re better off going after his plains and farmland provinces instead, or at least sending in bards to raise unrest everywhere. But that takes a while.
Ah, okay. Thanks!
How useful are amphiteres, btw? I checked their stats - they’re size 4, and have enough HPs to hopefully survive trampling long enough for their nasty-looking poison to kill even a mammoth.
I should have enough gems to bust out anywhere from half a dozen to a dozen amphiteres, by the time I have them researched.
I’ve got two bards beavering away in his capital – I would have sent more, but he attacked me before I was ready. Unrest is only up to 9 after two turns; maybe he was patrolling, or maybe each guy just has negligible impact.
Is anyone keeping track of what the votes for the Hoplite game are?
Also, in the Peltast game, I’m just curious how other people are faring against Helheim’s Helhirder horde. Sauromatia? How’s that invasion going?
I’m Vanheim and I guess I should’ve used an uberbless because they just ate everything I had: my sacreds, glamour troops, hirdmen, my hero with 20 protection and 36 defense, giant horde of expendable troops. Pretty much any casualties I inflict are from my pretender throwing magic around until he’s routed and then doing it again the next turn.
HOPLITE
You can check the updated Hoplite post here. Era will be Early.
I’m still awaiting email addresses from several players (if your name is not in bold, send me a PM). Not everyone got a reply because the board software makes you wait sixty seconds between PM’s and that was just too slow for me.
Nations have been mostly assigned - here’s how I did it - those folks that chose random, I picked a random number and assigned a random nation from the early list. From the remaining nations, I assigned people’s expressed preferences. The only person whose ox was gored was Mind Elemental, who lost out to Lum for Arco. Why did I do it that way? I think those folks with the courage to go random should get a pick from the full list, rather than just the nations no one else wants to play - you take a risk, you get a little bonus. I probably should have put that upfront, but the idea occurred to me today, and I just fell in love with it. So - sorry Mind Elemental, feel free to call me a jerk or pick another nation. Or both. Trading is ok, in case anyone has buyer’s remorse.
Everyone else - pick a nation or sign up for another round of Random choices. I’ll update the list as we go.
To review:
- If you haven’t picked a nation, please do so.
- If you haven’t sent me a PM with your email address, please do so.
- Map is still up in the air - please express a preference if you have one. Cradle, Oriana, or Glory of the Gods might be good choices with some elbow room, or you could go with the large random map. The premade maps tend to be less quirky, and are much more attractive to play on.
Once all that is done, we can get this party started!
Also, since there’s clearly a lot of interest, I’d encourage someone to start up a random Dawn of Dominions game - there’s a lot of fun in that map, and it is simply beautiful.

Qt3-Lictor.
Interesting events this turn.
For the last freaking time people. BUY PROVINCE DEFENSE. AT LEAST ONE POINT.
Failure to do so shall be considered an act of war against all your neighbors at once. Because if you DON’T, the ethical neighbor who DOESN’T sneak in a dozen scouts and take over your entire empire all at once gets screwed by the unethical neighbor who DOES. So it becomes a rush to see who can grab it all at once.
You don’t want to be known as a troublemaker, do you?
My Helheim bless is W9F6, so it’s only semi-über ;-). But I do agree with the discussion above, that high blessed Helherdings and Vans seems to be a bit overpowered currently. I had a disastrous start of the Peltast game, with my economy shot to pieces by events in my capital - research is still way behind schedule. Without the bad luck (not from scales - I only have misfortune 1) Helheim would have been a lot stronger by now. As it is, Sarumatia’s invasion is unfortunately going very well for them. I managed to halt him a bit, using just about every single creature I had, including researchers and pretender. With Sarumatia collecting the taxes that should have bought new Helherdings and Abysia building hot armies on my borders, I fear that I will find myself with more available Dom3 time on my hands pretty soon… ;-)
PS. Your guerilla warfare really hurt me too, as I did not have enough troops to react on it at all.
Curses! Foiled again! Well, I’ll still be up for Arco if Lum is willing to swap. Otherwise, I’ll take Vanheim - I almost always play nations based on how much I like their themes, but for this game, I want to try out the cheeseb-- uh, the competitive side of the Force.
Since we’re going Early, I’d like to vote Dawn for the map. :)
Was that directed at me? I just lost a couple of provinces to scouts but it’s no big deal. I’ll get them back next turn. I’m Undead Ermor so it’s not like I’m going to miss the income and they didn’t have death gem sites in them. They weren’t even super high dominion provinces so my net loss is like 12 ghouls or soulless.
I think what’s more interesting is that suddenly armies have popped up on my supposedly secure borders with parties I have non agression agreements with. You guys collaborating on something?
I should add that any such attempt would be unwise since I do have this stockpile of strategic nuclear death gems and if I’m cornered I might just have to launch this Burden of Time spell I’ve been keeping in reserve. I didn’t want to use it out of respect for my living neighbors, but if they aren’t going to respect me . . . well the world is a horrible place without respect.

What is the hold up here? It seems like its been a week since the last turn and I dont recall a notice on why its on hold.

No.
I’m talking about the other guy who lost a bunch of provinces to scouts this turn, including several stacks of troops with no commanders who routed against scouts (and at in least one case, had their retreat routes cut off by other scout attacks and thus died without even fighting) because there was no PD commander to tell them what to do.
I think it likely the new owner will take better care of those provinces.
Oh, and as for BOT, how about not. You can have the southern continent if you’ll hold off on that. Don’t worry about Czechrignon; take what you want of him. There’s a nice little town in Ulm territory, called Munich; we can discuss the details there.
Hey, that’s great, I love your approach. Can you talk everyone else out of attacking me because I’d love to use those death gems on funner stuff than BOT.
Unfortunately, no. The worst case is when you have a .2h (the orders file you upload) for the current turn on your secondary computer - it will automatically overwrite the one you uploaded from home. Lots of folks have been burned by that at least once.
The .2h files generally are not very big. You could try emailing it from home to yourself at work. I usually carry my current turns around with me on a flash drive.
Is there a timer on Dawn? It seems to be a while since the last turn.

Clark - I tried spitting up my Jaguar Warriors like you mentioned for the elephants above, but you just ended up seiging my castles… And it still didn’t fix the error!

We’re waiting on Jasper for Dawn apparently. I checked it yesterday, the timer indicated it should auto-host sometime tonight if he doesn’t get around to it.
Unless everyone’s sick of Cradle, that’s still my vote for a map.

Um, how about “no” on the whole undead-take-the-southern-continent thing.
Anyway, I am not so sure Marignon is going to go down to the undead so easily.
I agree with the PD comment. Why I can’t I start next to someone who puts no PD up (Ermor excluded obviously)!
In addition to the luck scales, there are two more luck rolls when starting the game. Roll Misfortune and you start next to a F9/W9 Vans; roll Luck and you start next to a no-PD empire.

Splitting up only works for elephants! Which you seriously need to give a shot. Seriously.
Hey, I have a question about those jaguar guys. They have 12 hp in human form, then do they get another 18 hp in jaguar form? Do they have an effective 30 hp?
Yeah, that’s what makes them so delicious. It also explains why on the replay you’ll see little negative numbers floating up over them when they get damaged and change into their jaguar selves. For some reason it doesn’t seem to be helping them much against Jake the Fat Happy Buddha. It’s too bad, as I had hoped that The Bleeding Time would be able to wake up from his slumber…
