Oh geez, a challenge! My only point is that blood magic is laid on top of normal magic, and beefing up normal magic might make more magically versatile strategies viable. Is it a coincidence that better players often prefer strong access to blood magic over a lack thereof? I realize that in Dominions diplomacy can override any relative advantage, but still: good players seem thrilled to have access to such a plentiful source of magic, and when large nations go to war, it seems to tip the scales strongly.
Q!
Believe me, I wasn’t expecting them to be that effective either. :) Now I know why you and Ermor call your massed troops chaff.
On the other hand - there’re still a lot of them. It’s intimidating. Plus, death dominion makes invasions suck. :P
Actually, in dom3 magic site freq is tied to ease of blood hunting. So in theory it should stay roughly the same balance of power at any level.
And for my 2 cents, I don’t think blood magic per se is very overpowering, though there are certainly some overpowred blood nations.

I would be interested in joining a game if you guys were starting one up. I joined a game last year but the school firewall in the dorms wouldn’t allow me to connect. Now that I’m out of the dorms I’m ready to get my newbie ass kicked.
Also, I know multiplayer is the best way to play the game, but is anyone else playing single player?

I play single-player quite a bit, but usually trying out mod nations. It’s probably why I suck so bad against human opponents.

I usually only play single player to try out nation ideas for multiplayer.
I think the complexity of the game lends itself to spending a while thinking about each turn, whereas in single player it’s too tempting to play lots of turns at once and get burned out.
The other downside of single player is that you get sucked in and end up seeing dawn from the wrong side. I think when you’re still learning the game, single player is pretty attractive, since all sorts of unexpected things happen, and figuring out the counters is pretty compelling. Also, games don’t take six months, and there’s something to be said for that (of course, I’m part of the problem in Hoplite, so…).
HOPLITE:
I’ve sumbitted my turn, and I think we’re just waiting on Ulm, so I would have no objections to the timer resuming.
I just hit reset on the 48 hour timer again since you still haven’t taken your turn. Do I need to be giving you a longer chunk of time here?

OK, I’ll run Hoplite now.
Edit: OK, turn is run, back on 96h timer. However, I can no longer do mail notifications of turn completions since I no longer have an external web server (I moved my blog to a dedicated blog host due to hosting issues) and can’t generate email from my linux box due to time warner and/or me sucking. If someone has a php-enabled web server that can send email, I can toss you the php script (it’s stupid simple) and point the turngen to that.
I’ll be happy to host the script.

Hey fellow Banefirers, what do you think about turning off Quick Host? I have a generally-but-not-always-reliable connection, and it seems like if I get knocked off, the turn hosts. Maybe that’s not the case, I haven’t tried repeating this purposely.

One thing you can do is connect to the server to download your turn, then once the file is downloaded, quit. Then restart Dom3, only reconnecting to the server once you’ve finished the turn to your satisfaction.

that is a good idea, I will try to remember that.

Nick: Can’t get through to your server today; it seems to be down.
So what’s going on in Hoplite these days? Is it still a virtual stalemate between the four of you?
We just resumed from a two-week-or-so pause, so basically we’ve only played one or two turns since Jonathan Crane’s last update. Situation hasn’t changed all that much. :D
Yep, the tiny ninja strikes again. I’ve reset it and brought the games back up.
HOPLITE
Yo, C’tis and Abysia! You only have two and a half hours left to get your turns in.
You’ve uncovered my unbeatable strategy! Stale a crucial turn and claim that’s why I lost! Must rethink plan…
