Whoa whoa whoa whoa, stop that horse right there mister. You’ve given me waaaay too much grief and too many “omg he’s going to run away with it” scares in Lanka to claim noob status or “semi-experienced” status. I hereby promote you to canny Dom3 master and bestow upon you your official Dom3 nickname: The Forest Fox. You must answer to this in the future in all dom3 threads.
P.S. I thought about “Rabid Racoon” as well, but it didn’t have the same ring. But you can have that one instead if you want.

LoL. Spoken like one who stormed my capitol and got a bit surprised by his reception. One of those moments where I spent way, way too long scripting the battle but it worked out really well. I still think I’ve made some horrific, noob mistakes although Lanka has easily been my best game.
I disagree with you a bit on the 90% useless spells/troops. I think many spells are useless in most situations but when the time is right they can be extremely effective. Just about every spell in the astral line rocks. Air has some neat things you can do, which I’d like to use to counter your heat-fliers for example (go-go-go storm!). The trick is picking the right spell for the right battle. I used some that I’ve never used before and was quite pleased at the result. (sea lords as walking double damage dealers with perpetual water gems = bad times for the lanka hordes!)

Nick, you’re ahead because of two big mistakes on my part (and they may not be in the long run!)
-
I got totally trashed by Abysia (with fire resistant troops), when you, for some bizarre reason, walked right over him, with basically conventional armies. I think his mages, unscripted, saved his bacon against me.
-
I told Hetzer to attack wahoo instead of you, because i judged him the stronger opponent. And honestly i think he was :) at least at that point Wahoo would have beaten me, the way he was advancing, but it would have taken a long time. It was a very Russian Front situation. Wahoo still scares the bejesus out of me.
I never fought him. That’s the easiest way to win a war. If you don’t believe me, ask him. I made a basically uncontested advance. We never fought for the same reason that you have a pile of undead (including tartarian!) sitting one province away from the old Mictlan capitol doing nothing. Leaderless armies don’t fight ;-)
Hetzer didn’t attack wahoo first, he attacked me first. I gave his abominations a good kicking, because abominations die easily at the hands of mindless undead, and suggested he go attack someone else who didn’t have hordes of undead.
But I agree about wahoo being scary. There’s a reason I’m grinding him into dust before fully engaging you. Right now you are facing less than 1/4 of my full force.
I had no idea you had that many mages in there. That was a nasty fight, something like 4 or 5 battlefield enchants going I think. The only loss from that mess that really stung was the Mandaha. He’s expensive to replace. The other expensive commander, The Wraith Lord, got away.
Suffice to say there will be a rematch and soon.
I’m proud to actually be on the way to winning a game for once, instead of crumbling and dying because LokeUtgard attacked me from behind. Utterdark is hilarious, darkness really does a number on mortal troops.
I think it helps that for the first time ever I didn’t start surrounded. My capital is right on the coast, not that far from Mictlan’s former capital and the front lines. In the beginning I just ran straight to the top of the map and then spread out to set up borders with everyone else before even collecting all the indies behind me.
Another thing that helped me this game is that when I went into the sea and ran into R’lyeh, Hetzer and I agreed to a sort of alliance right at the beginning. So instead of going to war when everyone else was pressuring us to attack each other, we just divided the world into the north and south and each stuck to our hemisphere.
I’d also like to give wahoo props for some of the most entertaining battles I lost, where he had barely any troops and a horde of sauromancers casting wither bones. Watching my zombie hordes inch towards them while the front line continuously evaporated was strangely fun.

Well it’s easy enough to avoid for me; i’m just too stupid to remember to bring Astral mages. That’s why i’ll never compete (or probably) ever win at Dominions. I can’t keep track off all the things i need to do, even when i remember that i need to do them…i need to write it all down. At this stage the number of pre-battle setup things to do is killing me.
Oh, i lost an immortal commander several turns ago. Just vanished into the void, deep in my own territory. That bug has been there for awhile it seems.
Hetzer asked me, pretty specifically who he should focus on after being pushed back with his Aboms. It was “choose right or we all lose”. I chose Wahoo. But since is now DOA he quit. He could have been a very very useful harrassment ally, raiding your coastal regions and outlying castles. His quitting pretty much threw the game to you.

Won’t my joining a big MP game unbalance it in favor of nearby neighbors? I don’t mind learning under fire, but if I am easily gobbled up doesn’t that make my neighbors more powerful for the others in the game?
You can usually find a game for new players so everybody’s in the same boat.

Good point. Alright the only other question I have is where to purchase the game. shrapnelgames.com sends me to Gamers Front which lists it as being on backorder, but they will happily charge me for it now.
Eh? I never get that fancy with it. I just have a set list of gambits and I cycle through the commanders who need orders and generally remember from where they are and how they are equipped what they are supposed to be doing. For example, when I cycle through and see a commander buffed to b5 doing nothing, I know that he’s supposed to cast infernal disease every turn. When I see a crystal mage sitting there with his starshine skullcap, eye of the void, and crystal coin I know he’s supposed to cast mind hunt every turn. So on and so forth.
Would you by chance be talking about Hopevoid the Wraithlord? I think he was just inside the edge of my dominion when my mind hunters caught up with him, I had a lot of priests in the area preaching and waiting for your undead army to arrive.
Maybe, maybe not. I don’t think he threw the game to me, because I was already really powerful at that point. My tipping point was assimilating the Mictlan and Abysian territories from Abysia. That gave me a huge cash influx and some juicy new places to set up blood hunting. There’s a big big difference power wise between Lanka with a blood income of 50 a turn and Lanka with a blood income of 100 a turn. Heck, I’m over 100/turn now and I plan to set up hunting in the nice territories I’ve taken from Maverni before we mix it up.
It’s true it’s on backorder, which sucks, but it’s also 20% off on Gamers Front until 11/15 (which goes a long way to explaining why it’s on backorder). DOM3-STARDOCK is the coupon code you need for the discount.

No, one of my unique national hero commanders.
How did I kill one of those? Horror attack? I didn’t think I got anyone important in those attacks.

I was trying to convince Hetzer to bother TC since I knew TC was whipping on Abyssia. I was, obviously, trying to keep Abyssia afloat for as long as possible tossing him gems/income. I was #1 with TC a somewhat close #2, when I realized that R’leyh had me surrounded with aboms. I was about 2 turns too late in reading it. He hit me hard but I pretty much pushed him back. If Nick hadn’t jumped on me as well, I think I could have beaten R’leyh and TC at the same time. I had TC pushed back and had a few more tricks up my sleeve. Then I made 2 mistakes that about cost me the game a) Sent my ogre king who had cast gift of health forest walking into Tc’s rear lines. he got mindhunted and a I lost a big army and my global, which Nick then cast. D’oh b) I completely screwed up the fight at Pan’s old capitol by scriptiong too many spells that exhausted my powerful troops. I had a tricked out airqueen that never fought b/c she cast too many spells. The only good thing about that battle was my pretender lived but it give nick a lot of uniques and other toys.
Hetzer leaving helped me survive, althoutgh there’s wasn’t a whole bunch omre he could do to me. Hopefully he would have jumped on Nick as well to slow him. I think I’ve slowed and stung Nick a bit more than he would have expected and TC needs to roll through him to take advantage.
This has been an enjoyable game b/c there has been excellent playing at a diplomatic level and it’s a been a solid Balance of power type game where just as one person breaks away other folks gang up to bring him down. I still think Nick is too strong but if I can surprise him a bit more…And catch that frigging wraith lord who somehow escaped me…
Interesting. By that point I considered myself a solid #1, with you as a near #2 and TC as #3. Well obviously, if you consider my subsequent wars, I was going after the threats in the order I prioritized them.
The really interesting part of this is that apparently we ALL leaned on Hetzer diplomatically. I’d love to his hear account of what conflicting lies and promises he was fed at that stage.
Yeah, I put it up on the Shrapnel forums. The below link should take you to the specific post. If not, just do a search there for Ilzgot.

By this pt, I had 3 caps, 8/12 lords of elemental royalty, fair amt of uniques, lot of mages including the beloved crystal mage spot, and a few other AWESOME sites that you know about. It’s possible that I didn’t appreciate your threat b/c most of your stuff was on the other continent but I was rolling pretty well and then things went wrong pretty quick. I also had a blood income of about 25, which is great for non-blood nation. Also had you pretty well scouted and your gem income was well below mine.
as for Hezter, I had far and away the least amt of communication with him.

The main thing, though, that i did was provide him Amulets of the Fish. Without those he was nothing but an astral annoyance, and occasional raider.
