Johan & LSB,

Yeah, it sorta makes sense that even if someone’s immortal, they don’t come back to life in the pajamas they die in. I’ve never tried this either, LSB. I haven’t seen the turn yet to decide if this approach was at all effective…

I had a similar misunderstanding about what “3-turn NAP” meant as jeff and GA had. I was in the role of jeff in my story. I wasn’t indignant enough to make any swears, but it was close for a while.

Bullshit.

I find it absolutely mind-boggling that anybody would seriously expect three turns’ worth of warning about an attack in this game. That’s not just enough time to prepare one’s own defenses, it’s enough time to get any other neighbors poised to counterattack too. Anybody who agrees to such a thing is basically conceding they cannot and will not ever be in a position to attack, unless they’ve already basically won the game.

“3-turn NAP” just naturally interprets itself as “lasting three turns”. Which I also find quirky, but that’s another and older argument.

A) In Lanka, Nick and I had a such an ongoing agreement which freed me to hammer TC and Nick to hamemr Abyssia. He stuck to it and won which was nice.
b) Great Atlantic and I had a similar agreement after I attacked him w/o warning. We were trying to staunch the Ermor horde. Didn’t work but it helped focus on other enemies.
c) I’ve learned the hard way you’re a bit of a sucker if you believe you’ll never be attacked. Especially if you’re the clear leader in the game.
d) I do prefer a more macro approach and have no backstabbed anyone. In fact I just warned someone that our non-aggression pact was over and I’m coming for them. I make a nice neighbor.
e) Rollory sucks for doing the same thing to me in Mistspell. treacherous cur.
f) if you can’t handle being backstabbed, play vs the computer. It’s part and parcel.

I consider it like Civ’s NAPs which basically means x turns of peace (10 turns in the case of Civ).

I know how you stand. You’ve been around a while. There are others whose word is meaningless and now Great Atlantic goes on the list. Which is fine. This isn’t a discussion about ethics. It’s been debated at length here and there is no need to resurface that tedious discussion.

GreatAtlantic broke his word and I’m letting everyone know that. So be it.

Maybe we can have a “Lord of the Flies” or “The Beach” type game. Good vs Evil. “Oath takers vs. Oath breakers”. Unfortunately, I think the talent would take the dark side. Rolllory, Wahoo and Great Atlantic are skilled players. But maybe I could recruit some ringers. The good side is supposed to have wizards, eh? :)

Yah, well, didn’t hurt you much did it. Thing is in that situation I really believe time was not on my side; waiting would just have made me relatively weaker and weaker until finally some neighbor would’ve done a quick steamroll and that would’ve been that. When that’s the analysis, I don’t see much of a justification for pursuing such a path. It was a choice between very likely slow strangulation under the guise of “friendly” agreements, and risk of a quick death. Had to throw the dice.

(I’m not really happy with the long-term research potential of Eriu, the way I had it set up, anyway - particularly with limited space and income.)

f) if you can’t handle being backstabbed, play vs the computer. It’s part and parcel.

This.

And why exactly do you get to unilaterally decide that? What makes your interpretation of the plain English phrase (plainly meaning, in the eyes of at least some people, something other than what you say it means) the correct one?

My ethics are beside the point here. The question is how one judges whether another player is likely to do what they say they will do. You haven’t presented any evidence on the subject other than your own wishful thinking.

I’m a bit flustered at you Jeff. To clarify for others I’ve signed NAPs with, in Inquisitor, especially, x-turn NAP means the NEXT x turns of NAP, unless I’ve clarified it with words like “warning” or “advanced notice”, which I know I didn’t in this case. I said 3-turns as I figured thats how long it would take to grab the remaining indies and finish the fort I was building, though a Bogus attack and a 2 on me way war ended that pretty quickly. You can call me an “oath-breaking cocksucker” for not hiring a lawyer to avoid ambiguities, but I learned that terminology from playing the game on the Shrapnel boards, so it must have some degree of acceptance.

Let’s let it go. We think differently, which is fine.

Good luck in the game.

The Big War has gotten into full swing, with all 3 remaining pretenders involved now. The major battle of the turn featured the Niefel Giants All-Stars vs the upstart Tir na n’Ogian newbies. The all-pros took a big hit, and the Hall of Fame is looking a bit morbid now. I was particularly glad to see Alf go down without him registering a kill of his own. Pretty astonishing considering his 62 strength. The Giant’s tartarian got away, thanks to his rather odd combo of the Aegis + the Armor of Virtue. One would think the whole point of the Aegis is to stand there and get hit a lot.

Now we get to see just how many Hordes from Hell and Horrors Niefel can summon up each turn, and how many of his remaining 70 Jarl SCs have any equipment.

FWIW, I interpret the terminology completely differently, but then perhaps the QT3 dom3 community has evolved some different terminology over time.

It sounds like a misunderstanding, but it’s hard to blame either side in these circumstances. I’ve never been bitten by this kind of thing before because I always make sure to lay things out very clearly. There is no such thing as a diplomatic shorthand in my mind because everything is on the table for negotiation.

I feel bad that you are citing me as an example here because I treated you worse in that game than I’ve ever treated any of my allies. I did rigorously stick to all terms of our agreement, yes. I always do that, lest I find myself untrusted and unable to ally in future games. However I also lobbied hard to other players behind your back to get you dogpiled.

Hoplite

Yeeeehaw. Helheim has overwritten my Forge of the Ancients with an Arcane Nexus, the first time I’ve seen this supposed “I-win” button cast in an MP. Now I know what he was saving up all those astral pearls from Stellar Focus for!

My main PC was down so I’d thought I’d use the dom3 host to check out some websites … lo and behold, Firefox on Ubuntu has a crash that kills the entire video driver, hardlocking the entire machine. Wow.

Two reboots later, MistSpell and Inquisitor are back up and I’m not touching that thing again for anything else other than shell access…

Weird, I’ve never been able to do anything in X that could drop the whole machine. Do you have some kind of funky video card or is that just a really bad X bug?

New Patch is out, which I wasn’t expecting, and it includes a new late era nation named “Bogarus,” which sounded so much like “Bogus” I first thought it was a practical joke. But if so, then half the forum is on the joke. Regardless, we have to try to coordinate our update schedules.

For some reason, I have astrals coming out of my ears despite having no native Astral mages - and no, Sages don’t count. I just did it to see if I could. Yay for randomly dispelling something I’ve tried TWICE before to get rid of. We’re still buds, right, my Vannish brothers?

Crom update:

Nick will patch sometime this week. At that pt all existing turns will be wiped and you’ll need to update your own Dom.

The current turn will process in the next 24 hours and will be an unpatched turn.

and hopefully Tc’s pretender returns (although if your citadel was still under siege by bogus…)
