That is a huge frustration, no doubt. But the balance still tips way way in favor of the game and the Illwinter guys. To me, anyway.
As examples of why I’m still firmly in Illwinter’s camp, a couple of other new things are coming in the next patch or so. One is just a tweak, but a long-deserved one: Tartarian factories are nerfed. Not sure of the details, but it looks like they’ll get some chance for their own unique incurable insanity. A much bigger demonstration of the kind of new content they keep adding (for free) is another new nation across all 3 ages - based on Israeli/near mideastern mythology.
Now that’s a big change. Tartarians often play a big role in a late game. Any details on this future change?
Personally I don’t think it’s a good idea to give them insanity. (assuming it would work as R’lyeh dreamland insanity). It could make them very unpredictable and difficult to use. Why not just increase cost from 10 to 15 or 20 death gems? That would significantly reduce their efficiency and numbers without adding big random element into the game that doesn’t really need any more randomness.
Bottom line - just as ron_derby, I like how developers are not afraid to tackle long-standing problems. But I wish they would choose different approach on this one.
This is unrelated to the game I’m in, or to the discussion of the new balance issues, but I’m having an odd Dominions problem.
So, I decided to try and install a copy of Dominions to a rather large flash drive I have, so I can mess around with it during dead periods at work. However, while it starts and runs without any issues, things start to come up in play: Attempting to generate a random map resulted in a bizarrely mismashed affair, with the map graphics failing to line up with the provinces, while a VP game was won seemingly at random by a nation that only had a single victory point.
Has anyone else had these problems, or attempted to install and play Dominions on removable media?
I’ve heard the random map generator bugs out if you try to use twice in one start-up. Try quiting and restarting. As for the VP thing, make sure you check the settings. Are you using total or cumulative VPs? Did you make sure you need more than 1 VP to win? Etc.
I had set it to regular VP victory at 4 VPs, and checked the map afterwards; the only VP they had was their capital. I’ll see if I can recreate the bug (if I can’t, it probably was me unknowingly setting it to cumulative VP victory)

You could express it in an artfull couplet, or just call him a monstrous sociopath.
QT3-MORNINGSTAR just went live. Let me know if there are connectivity issues of any sort.

I’ve connected to the server ok. First turn in the bag. Some notable talking points…
Only four nations remain: Neifelhelm (Lazy Shiftless Bastard), Arco (wahoo), Agartha (GuildBoss), and Tien Chi (me). Neifelhelm and I have been fighting for so long that the great-grandchildren of the original leaders are now graduating from high school and wondering why we live with this ancient hate.
Arco and I (Agartha) have been friends so long that our great-grandchildren are wondering why we live with this ancient peace. They cry for WAR!
Hey, quick question. How does the game decide the order in which spellcasters fire in a battle?
First, Defense always gets their spells off first. Second, each unit has a hidden ID number and who ever has the earliest id number goes first. One way you can tell id number is the order in which mages appear in a stack. The top left unit will always cast first, while the bottom right unit last.
Aren’t I magnanimous?
Turn 1
God damn. The south is a mess, no more than 4 provinces between people’s capitals. Who are you lucky bastards who started all alone in the vast wildernesses of the top two corners of the map?

Crom:
So it has begun. The infamous Agartha/Arco showdown. And with not even a surprise attack! But already the provinces of the Agarthan pretender are following to the one true Being. Me.
What’s the IP/port for the Morning Star?
Everyone should have gotten an email with that information from Nick. Please check, including your spam folder, to see if its there. If not, PM him and let him know that your email address was typed wrong somewhere in the string of communication. Among other things, emails will announce when the server has hosted. Just in case its bad to post this information in a world of data mining bots, I’ll PM you the address and port.
Edit: Speaking of hosting confirmations, any chance you can take my name off the autohost for Jeff, Nick? Its not a big pain, but a little annoying to be getting these confirmations when I’ve resigned. Now that I’m getting email confirmation for M.S., I don’t want to get confused over the things. If it would be hard for you, don’t worry about it.
Oh nevermind, I didn’t check that mailbox. My fault.
I got it, thank you Great Atlantic. Connecting to the server now…
You are magnanimous! But that is an insane way to decide who fires a spell first. I can think of 100 other reasonable ways to decide.
Anyhow, I love Dom3 nevertheless.
Yes, the South is more crowded than the North.
Though the south is also a lot wealthier than the north. That south central column is loaded with field provinces. Whoever can control that prize will be the player to beat.
