Wind guide/flaming arrows (along with 100 archers or so) kills pretty much everything. If it has hit points, it dies. I doubt Helheim’s sacreds would have been much better, though the fliers would at least cause some damage - the only chance is to get stuck into the enemy as quickly as possible.

Heavy duty air magic support seems to be at least one solution. I’m not sure how the non-air nations are supposed protect themselves - perhaps at this stage of the game they have to bypass using large armies altogether, and rely on a mix of raiding, supercombatants and strategic spells.

The battle I won against Caelum involved a combination of Mist and Arrow Fend to nullify his archers, whilst my drain dominion combined with Rigor Mortis helped knock out some of his mages - Relief would help keep my own mages on their feet. Four different mages casting thunder ward helped cut down casualties from the thunder strikes.
Even with a nice selection of defensive battlefield spells, and one of my own supercombatants, I still lost half my troops.

Yep. Though it’s not just a counter to Caelum, it’s a good strategy on its own for most circumstances.

I will be glad to share some additional tips how to beat my armies if there will be an interest, both by using Mictlan troops as well as non-nation specific tactics. But naturally it will have to wait until this game is over. :)

As far as that battle over my castle went - all I can say I had 2 turns to prepare and organize the welcoming committe for the Mictlan’s historical arrival on the Eastern Continent. And I knew exactly where they would strike - being sandwiched between Ermor’s troops after crossing the river didn’t leave them much choice if they were to attack this turn.

Besides the Blood God has publicly demanded blood, so I had to do my best not to disappoint him… >;)

Har har… wait for my answer, i think i have perhaps excatly what your armies need ;)

I assume you meant several hundreds more of Mictlan’s sacred soldiers corpses?.. >;) Yes, I could use it. It makes a good fertilizer for my mostly wasteland realm.

Nope, blessed troops are so yesterday… ;)

I’m going to be irregular about Inquisitor turns for a bit, my computer is dying and it’ll take a while for me to get a replacement. I’ve asked Marcin not to turn the timer back on until this is resolved.

Waiting for the next Inquisitor turn is going to be physically painful.

Mist Spell

I’m trying to connect, but keep getting a “Waiting for Game Info” window. I have to kill the App. Is anything wrong on the server side?

Thanks

Getting the same.

I’ve PM’d Marcin. Maybe we need a server restart.

Is Crom down? I haven’t been getting turn emails lately and tried to log on to check, but can’t connect.

Mistspell appears to be stuck on Generating a new turn. What did you guys do?! :D

Does anyone recall offhand if there’s an easy fix?

Edit: Nevermind, there it went.

I can’t connect to the Morning Star. Is Nick’s server offline?

Apparently so. Must have been dead only a short while as you are the first person to complain. It will be back online in a few minutes.

Since I’ve effectively washed my hands of this game, I feel free to post ideas about how to beat flaming arrows. Admittedly, when I did it with Midgard I had the incredible skinshifters, the advice will still apply.

  1. Respond with your own firepower. Mages win battles in the mid-game. Get 10+ casters throwing down falling fires, falling frosts, and/or thunderstrike and you turn the battlefield into troop death.

  2. Troop Selection, a successful parry means the arrow does zero damage. Shields provide a very large parry bonus. Hence, high protection troops with shields do best against arrows. Conversely, low protection troops with out shields do the worst, even if they have an incredible bless.

  3. Defensive Magic, reduce the effectiveness of his archers. Mists halves base precisicion. Storm halves it again… and automatically nullifies half of all arrows. Finally, storm will have the added benefit of stopping his units from flying. Plus, you can trade for Staffs of Storms to get the storm effect on the battlefield. Then, there is Arrow Fend, which gives all troops 80% protection from arrows, but maybe not the fire effect, which brings us back to point 2. Also, there is a death spell called Darkness that reduces presicion by a quarter, I think. It also halves attack, though, so be careful with it.

  4. Use Screens. Basically cheap, expendable trops placed up front to soak in the arrows. Blood summoned imps can do this job as well. Be sure to spread out your screens troops into small dispersed units so more arrows miss.

  5. SC’s or Thugs. With a high enough protection, even flaming arrows won’t bother these types of units. Use them as a survivable screen, or give them some offense to cut through the hordes.

Three commanders, including Nephele (Air Queen), and over 300 units perish in the battle of Validun. Weathering dozens of Thunder Strikes from the Eagle Kings of Caelum, Sauromatia’s poison bows, lancers, and hydras carry the day. Ninety-nine corpses still litter the field outside the Caelum forest ramparts.

Caelum’s Air Queen Aella fled the field and survived, but not before sneaking in an unfortunate hit on Euryale, Pretender of Sauromatia, who is now a very well-equipped Soulless.

Sauromatia declares victory despite the heavy losses, and May 20 will forever be remembered as the day when an army led by two Air Queens was defeated. (Having never even defeated ONE Air Queen in my Dominions life, this is a big moment for me, and the Sauromatians have promised a statue in my honor in the public square in Resting Heights.)

So, tip: anyone who wants an Air Queen, there’s one available this turn. Let’s not let Caelum nab it, shall we?

Nice work. I had a scout there and watched the battle. A very close run thing.

Sauromatia could really have improved its performance by giving their SCs rings of shock resistance. A staff of storms would help them as well.

If Sauromatia, or anyone else needs such items, drop me a pm and perhaps we can cut a deal.

Crom:

Just a quick note. I’m leaving the timer off till after the mem day holiday. Happy grilling.

Now THAT’s a good sales tactic. Everyone watch out for baruk, he’s a sly one.
