But do MA Divine sites exist? I didn’t see any listed in the spreadsheet I found online.
I sounds like Ulm is a nation that greatly benefits from Production 3 scales. Did you choose Production scales for your pretender? I don’t know of any way to increase resources in a province after the game’s started. You need to capture the high-resource provinces ASAP. Hopefully you have decent domain, since you can view province stats in provinces in which you have domain, so make those with high resources your #1 priority. Remember that resources are tied to specific provinces while gold is not.
Try incorporating baby hydras (or whatever the hell they’re called) into your non-poison resistant army. You’ll end up killing more of your troops than the enemy does!
Yeah, we got that – I definitely went Production 3 with my pretender. Ulm just seems to have a really slow start. Is that normal?
Good tips!
Ron, thanks for the Pax Ermor AAR. I was in the far north, only hearing rumors of what was going on in the south. Turns out the rumors were mostly correct. I just wish I could have seen some of the Bandar v. Ermor battles.
Not sure, since I’ve only played three nations: Man in PacificDreams, Caelum in Septrain, and Oceania in NewbieRumble. I did see some of the Ulm units in PacificDreams, and they are very imposing. Their high quality armor and shields drive your resource costs through the roof!
BTW, is there a maximum number of magic sites a province can contain?
Absolutely – my cheapest unit costs me 24 resources. 24!
I’ve got cavalry, pegasus riders & amazons, and a bunch of heavy infantry around. I get the idea for Ulm – highly-equipped troops go chokeslam all those who oppose me – I just need to get more resources coming in. I tried Ulm out briefly in singleplayer with a better start, but I had more light infantry around me then, which makes a big difference.
Your cheapest non-magic resource unit costs 24 resources? Damn! That’s harsh.
Do you happen to have more than one province near you with a VP? Compared to non-VP provinces, VP provinces have an increased number of indy units, and they’re better units. Beware of Heavy Cavalry and Heavy Infantry in those provinces!
I think I’m right near a VP province. And yeah, it’s rough! It’s a far cry from playing as Shinuyama, with their 8-gold, 3-resource spearmen. I have about 200 of those running around. I’m genuinely sad when each member of my army dies – I feel like I should name each soldier, I’m so attached to them.

Ulm takes a bit to gear up. Magma eruption for your smith mages. You have the most powerful archer in the game so I’d low up on crossbowmen for cavalry/ heavy I. one shot kills (click on the arbalest of the ulm crossbowmen).
Ulm has to take prod 3, which is paid for by drain 3 (make sure you took drain 3!). Then make a beeline to the closest mountain province you can and build a fort there.
Also be careful by building the super black plate inf, b/c their encumberance is too high…
Got some of those – they did well enough, I suppose. I imagine when I have more than 10 I’ll notice it more.
Of course I took Drain 3! When the game says “your smiths are not affected by Drain 3!” that’s a big blinking neon sign to say “TAKE DRAIN 3!”
Okay, help me out a bit on this – encumbrance? If I remember correctly here away from my manual, as my troops deal and take more damage and fight more in battle, their fatigue goes up, which makes encumbrance more of a problem. Am I right? Or am I mixing things up?
I don’t have any Black Plate Infantry now – they cost 34 resources. I could build four of them per turn, as opposed to 5 or 6 of the others!
Granted, I can build a fort immediately upon taking a mountain, so that helps a bit.
Ulm, and most slow start nations, almost require an awake SC pretender to “prime the pump” as it were. That is especially true if you’re a beginner, and hard to argue with if you’re an expert.
As for MA holy sites, check your chart again. Most sites can be found in any era, and I’m guessing the actual case is there are no holy sites SPECIFIC to MA. However, I can’t recall getting a holy site in the MA off the top of my head, but I’m sure they are there.

Hi all,
I used to play Dom3 about a year ago with some of the folks I see posting here (wahoo, ron_derby, etc.). I’ve lost to several :)
I haven’t played since, but fired it up again last night. Reading the posts here has given me the itch again.
Anyone thinking of starting up another game?
I’ve forgotten most of the detail, but I’m reliable to take my turn, usually pretty quickly.
What Independant strength is the usual?
I’ll practice up a bit :)
This thread revive made me feel the same way. I went through a pile of old games to find my Dom3 disc, and re-installed last night. I would be up for a new game too. But damn, I’m rusty.

I’m still interested in playing and would be willing to set it up and admin (PBEM via Llamaserver) if no one more experienced wants to do it.

Atlantic Fervor note: I’m out of town until Monday. Please hold the next turn.
The game’s waiting for your turn right now – not sure if you knew that, since GA rolled back the last turn, and things are possibly weird.
Septrain!
I’m feeling good about this game thus far. I’m getting a handle on what my guys can do, I’m getting more and more troops out, and I even took multiple provinces in one turn! Since in NewbieRumble I’m Ulm, where that’s not happening even a little bit, I’m very happy. I also am completely in love with Luck 3 as a scale. I want to do this ALL THE TIME now, especially since one of those events gave me 66 free troops! (They’re all light militia, which is to say “cannon fodder,” but still, they’re free!)
I can also see a few other players wandering around my borders. Hi guys! Shinuyama loves you! Don’t kill me!
In checking the scales, I have the largest army, but let me assure you that is not a problem! When your army is primarily made up of 8g3r spearmen who are outfitted in arrow-attracting bullseyes, you are not a severe threat to your enemies.
I also would love to know where my Sacred troops are.
NewbieRumble!
Ulm is finally expanding! Huzzah! I have no idea how well anyone else is doing, of course, with our graphs off, but since we’re all still learning I don’t mind chatting about my early game.
My first army is out and about, with a mix of crossbows and everything else I have – shields up in the front, guys with mauls behind them. I’ve lost one troop in two battles since getting crossbowmen up, so that’s worth mentioning. I’ve shifted my capital into making the guys with flails because they have two attacks per turn, which has GOT to be good, right? That’ll help me deal with being outnumbered. I’m learning!
I’m also the leading recruiter of mercenaries, I’m sure. When spending 150 gold can DOUBLE your standing army…
As far as research goes, hahahaha. Let’s move on.
One sort-of-advantage I have with a slow start is that once I have a suitable province, I can immediately plop down a fort and get more resources coming in there. In Septrain, I’m afraid to not be building troops. In this one, I’ve got 2200 gold because I can’t spend it fast enough.
How important is it to make more forts? I haven’t quite figured out the importance and proper placement of buildings.
