Thanks for the feedback, Rollory, I really appreciate it. Province data changes are my preferred method of improving the map since altering the map graphics is a lot more involved, but I will definitely consider making some of the changes you suggest.

Dear Scaredy Cat:

I have been gifted the duty to inform you that we, the great nation of the mighty and glorious Thunder!, have no intention of attacking you at this time. We merely had extra troups with no where to put them. They are now lounging in the mountains, seeing the ‘pretty flags’ of your people and generally taking the day off. Do not fear them.

Unless of course, you’re feeling elphanty. If so, then charge.

Also, Thunder! wishes me to inform you, he has no intention of attacking you or any nation without informing you first. He says that he does not wish to hear “foul play” as the last words on your lips. That would make him unhappy. And no one likes it when he is unhappy.

Now, the brown flagged people, or as my amazing and stunning god Thunder! calls them, the ugly ones, they might have cause to worry. We must expand some place after all. Be worried not yet though, Thunder! shall inform you when he will attack you. This so Thunder! swears!

Your ever humble servant,

Page the sixteenth Jenseon.

Hetzer, while you’re writing open letters: Could you make it a poll, please?
I vote for slug it out, and do post screenshots of it.

Are you in the Squidz game? I never know who’s playing and how isn’t. I only know people by their flag colors :P.

Translation:

Before you go AI, will you please send me all your gems, gold, and magic items?[/QUOTE]
Disclaimer: I would never ask Gene to hand all his valuables to Nick Walter. In fact I find Nick Walter scary.

Edit: Matt, don’t mind me, I’m just a bystander to your game.

Geez, haven’t you guys been reading Nick’s denials of his Dominions supremacy? I mean, the guy can’t OMG THE LIZARDS THEY’RE EVRYWHERE SOMEONE HELOPFJ!RYH!Rh234`8h4

And ttt-then they ate the monkey’s brains – it was terrible!

I’m not in the game either, which is why your begging him to give me all the loot was very puzzling.

Please stand by, Jason is currently experiencing technical difficulties and will be back shortly to ammend his previous statement. The lizard standing behind him with a trident will not in any way be threatening him. As a matter of fact that’s not even a lizard. It’s a warm blooded human woman. An ugly one. With a trident. We can’t explain it either. Human mating habits are strange.

Count up how many provinces outside it’s capitol Caelum can reasonable expect to take without conflict (4), the fact that it’s capitol is only adjacent to two provinces and so resource hungry Caelum is short of resources, that it’s a long march for ground troops from the capitol to anywhere, and that Caelum actually has 3 neighbors, including Helheim who is just as close as Kailasa. I think it’s quite a bit harder than you suggest, even despite starting with 3 provinces. I would in fact suggest adding an extra resource site to it’s capitol.

Marverni is a close second, but central positions can also have strength if you find a strong alliance. Ulm I would rate as just as hard as Marverni, because it starts next to desperate for space Caelum, and it’s low MR troops are really vulnerable to False Fetters, and 4 neighbors isn’t much better than 5 neighbors.

Ermor would be up there too except that Ermor has all that farmland to pay for defense, while Marv and Ulm have nothing but forests. Pretty much everyone else has only 2 or 3 neighbors, which makes things lots easier.

I also think it’s a bit “off” that Van and Hel, with their glamour troops with free mirror images, ALSO start in two of the strongest strategic positions with a minimum of neighbors.

Vanheim has 3 neighbors and Sauromatia 2.5 neighbors, both with a corner and hence an easy rating. Ermor is middling easy because of it’s wealth, offset somewhat by it’s central position. Helheim is harder than Vanheim because it’s land is poorer and less plentiful, Vanheim can sail across the lake, and the ever present threat through Helgate. Also, Helheim has five neighbors – Vanheim, Ulm, Caelum, Kailasa, and perhaps Marverni. This is not exactly a minimum of neighbors.

Arcoscephale is hard because of problems with the amphibious Agarthans, offset somewhat by it’s sailling site. C’tis has 2.5 neighbors, but is kept from an easy rating by it’s low income swampland, and the threat of a seaborne invasion from Arcoscephale, and an eventual amphibious threat from Agartha. I believe it has some gold mines, which judging from how easily C’tis stomped Kailasa might be a bit much. Kailasa has 3 neighbors, and thus an average rating.

Oceania has an extremely strong position, since its only real competitor - Agartha - starts on the opposite side of the map, with the eastern sea to exploit, and has no reason to go looking for a fight. But nobody else can invade Oceania effectively without massing a preponderance of force. Which means Oceania can be pretty aggressive without worrying about defense the way the rest of us do.

Quite true, which is why Oceania is rated as easy. However, Oceania doesn’t have alot of water provinces, and in order to succeed must conquer and hold land provinces, which land nations will often ally to prevent. It’s easy to survive and harass from under the sea, but it’s hard to actually win.

You mean lizards, not lizard. Hundreds of Elite Lizards, bred for war!

  1. Sounds interesting, although requires redrawing the map.
  2. Unthematic. Ermor should be next to Ulm.
  3. Giving Vanheim some more coastal vulnerbility would be good, but requires redrawing the map.
  4. Caelum and Helheim are already neighbors. Hel has 4 or maybe 5 neighbors, not 2.

Nice try!

My philosophy in love and war is however; if i’m going down, you’re going down with me!

Hey Marcin - another suggestion - is there any way to have the monitor read and display how many hours left until the next hosting?

I have 2.5 neighbors? Who? I have Acro to the south and Kailasa to the north. Unless you mean the coastline?

Ctis has no gold mines. My income for that early push came from order-3 and a willingness to patrol and overtax my capitol.

  1. Caelum and Helheim are already neighbors. Hel has 4 or maybe 5 neighbors, not 2.

Edit2: Holy crap. You’re right. I never saw that Helgate connection earlier. My apologies.

Man, if I’d known about that, I would’ve handled certain diplomatic overtures LOTS differently.

Ah well.

So if you plan on staying with the game, could you at least consider sending all your stuff to Nick Walter?

Speaking of philosophies, mine for love and war is, you’re going down anyway!

I’m thinking of Agartha for the .5, who’s almost certain to conquer the sea to C’tis’ south. I’d rate it as “half a neighbor”, as it doesn’t seem too likely Agartha will pursue C’tis, but a strong alliance with Arcoscephale could make it happen easily enough.

I misremembered about the C’tisian “gold mines”. Checking the .map I see that instead the Ziggurat provinces’ population is set to levels considerably higher than you’d normally see in swampland.

No sweat. It’s not readily apparent that the cave mouth in Helheim means anything (especially as the one in Vanheim doesn’t), and it’s only really obvious to Caelum, Helheim, and perhaps Kailasa.

Some sort of cut-away tunnel graphic might help with that. Or perhaps change the province borders to go over the cave mouths, and paint them blue? Shifting Helheim’s capitol circle a bit left and/or down might help do that; the eastern cave province could shift it’s northern border to the cave, and it’s southern border to the “frost line” (perhaps change it from white to blue as well).

Similarily, there’s a non obvious route behind Mount Kailasa. That could probably be made clear with a couple choice bits of blue border to either side of the mountain sprite.

Plus the pops for the three tomb provinces, which as Jasper points out are many, many times more populous than swamp/forest provinces would ever be out of the gate.

I’m guessing I’m out next turn. It was nice playing with you guys, although I made enough blunders for two games, IMO.
