I am not sure if we covered this yet, at least not broadly. I know we’ve talked about it before but not in as a group. So I read a piece on PC gamer about a new Tavern Game. My expectations were high because I’ve read about this game before and I thought, finally some traction except the art looked different, the style was different and then I realize there are two tavern games.
And what frustrates me about this is I either have to go EA, or more likely, pick one because they release so close to each other.
I know there are differences in these games, and sometimes these, what are we calling them now, double A devs/pubs are in there, but it seems strange to hear someone say something like hey what a unique idea, and then see this unique idea right around the corner in another game.
There are several like this even and the bigger grouping that got notice awhile back were these:
I wound up with Planet Coaster myself because it was done and well review. I suspect Parkitect is actually the better choice for me so I might pick it up when they finish it anyway. At the time though, i decided I would only do one and I’m still half sort of playing it.
I’ve heard some people like it, and others really seem to hate it. It’s on PC though and MHW is simply not on PC yet. Capcom could really mess that up, but MHW came out first on console so I passed myself. I don’t have enough free time to double up on every genre.
I ran into this with Infinifactory vs. Factorio. I had no idea they were different games until I went into Infinifactoy completely not expecting to see a fully 3D rendered game.
Oh wow. I didn’t eve know this one existed. If someone asked me about that one I probably would have said something like yeah i think you’re saying Factorio completely wrong. Similar theme for sure.
I thought this thread was about Double Fine games. I’m tired.
I sure hope those tavern games turn out good. Parkitect is very good game, and the developers are phenomenally responsive. I find it more fun and rewarding than Planet Coaster.
My fairly recent experience of this was with the two time manipulation puzzle games above, both released within a week of each other after years in development.
Not everything invokes hate though. Some games produce an indifferent or it’s an okay response. Not everything is… hated, and some games are even loved!
Dauntless is really good imo, and I put 600 hours into MHW. Also comparing them isn’t really any more fair than comparing any two shooters. They are the same genre the same way Overwatch, Call of Duty and Rainbow Six are, yet all three will appeal to vastly different gamers. Also keep in mind that one is free to play, the other is a AAA title. Different markets just from that alone.
I’m intrigued by the Tavern games. I’m still really hoping for a well done adventurer management type game where you do none of the actual combat. So far every one of them is either really janky or makes you do something more than I am looking for.
The double for Factorio is Big Pharma not Infinifactory. Infinifactory (like all Zacktronics games) is really about programming, not production line management. Factorio and Big Pharma are much more similar to each other.
It’s true that some of these games will only have a theme relating them and they can and some will play very differently from each other. When they release close like this though it can cause some confusion, and if they are close… well maybe others buy all 2 or 3 but I feel like i am going to choose one. And not only that, if I choose one that is bad, I might not even try the other one. If I mostly enjoy the first selection I might try the other one… like a year or more later.
That’s just me though. If they were released further apart, they’d probably get my attention individuals. When they’re close together, not so much. Also, the ones that park themselves in EA doesn’t help when it comes to “releasinng” together.
