Download Managers

It’s 2017 and I have not used a download manager for ages, but I have a requirement to pull some purchased files, some large, some small, and the occasional large file is timing out or failing with a network error. The stupid e-store has a limited number of downloads per file so I am eating up my chances when a job fails and I don’t notice until 3 hours later and have to kick off a new download.

What’s the go-to download manager these days? Are an of the Chrome add-ons any good? Is jdownloader still an malware/adware laden crapware? Ninja Download Manager, Free Download Manager, Download Accelerator Plus - all these are thinks that sites like Techradar recommend, are any actually free, work ok and and not loaded with adware?

I’ve used Chrono (Chrome plugin) as my default downloader for ages and it’s been solid.

There is a trick to get it to resume a broken download though (press ctrl-j in an incognito window). Not sure if that’s due to some limitation with plugin architecture, or just poor coding on the authors part.

I use the free www.freedownloadmanager.org without any spyware for the rare times i need to queue up and pace http downloads.

For large files timing out on OS X, I simply use the CLI wget command.

Despite having a slightly dated looking UI Internet Download Manager is rock solid and updated constantly.

Cheers, giving freedownloadmanager a crack.

I’ve been using Free Download Manager for probably close to 12 years now and it’s always been solid for me.
