I’m about 120 hours in, and have done a lot of things “out of order”, or apparently delayed certain missions longer than I “should” have.
As a hardcore keyboard/mouse person, I reluctantly agree that (like Dark Souls) DAI is much better with a controller.
I’ve had some of the same nuisance issues as others: slow-motion cutscenes (pound X), the inevitable mystery crashes, random monsters re- or de-spawning (I love watching those camps just vanish!), and even the occasional “why am I still in combat”/“why can’t I talk to people”.
Some of the visuals, environments, and moods of the game are fantastic. I actually stood on the Storm Coast shore and just watched the waves for a while. The various deserts are also quite nice.
My main gripe with the game is everything feels somewhat inconsequential, despite the game constantly straining for “EPIC!!!”. Yeah, it’s huge…but it’s also effectively a lot of the same thing over and over, and it doesn’t feel like you’re progressing. Pick up metals and herbs. Brief combat. Find shard. Brief combat. Go to quest location. Brief combat. Nobody dies, nothing really changes.
Given that you can re-spec, there’s no real reason to ever change out the team you roll with, aside from wanting some of the chat dialog to change because you get tired of hearing Solas ask Varric about the time he fought C________. The game effectively punishes you for not always taking a rogue and a mage on all missions…which is also fine, but…why give me a “choice”?
The combat is relatively unsatisfying. I generally agree with Tom’s review in the “10 Overrated Games” article.
The best things about the game are having these beautiful scenic vistas to explore. The worst is that much of that “exploration” consists of jogging 50 feet, ripping up some weeds or picking up a rock, and then repeating that endlessly.
I’m still enjoying it, even if it’s basically the last Saint’s Row game in RenFaire drag.
