I believe it also works if there is a machine component in the space above - the component will be marked as “hanging” as long as there is nothing underneath.

Well, I’ll not be trying to learn to use gears to switch power from vertical axles to horizontal for my pumps, chaining pumps is much, much easier.

Now to learn to have my dwarves NOT build from a direction that traps them in a section I just walled off.

Set a construction for the spot you don’t want them to occupy, then immediately suspend that construction.

Linked over on RPS, Bravemule, a lovely graphical AAR, written in the DF style.

Wait, what? What’s wrong with sewer brew and prickle berry wine? Or do you just think you wouldn’t like them if they were real?

Anyone looking to use Dwarf Therapist now that it no longer has anyone maintaining it should look to theLazy Newb Pack for a version compatible with the new version of DF.

Aside from meeting the basic requirements for food and booze, meals also occasionally generate happy thoughts. While it’s not clear if it’s so, I’m assuming that drink-related happy thoughts are related to drink value. So I prioritize value-2 drinks, and ignore the value-1 drinks like Sewer Brew if I can. Whip Wine is value 3, so I’ll make an effort to make that if I can. I’ve never actually seen any Sun Berries to make value-5 Sunshine.

Some Dwarves have preferences of course, but if it follows the room-value rules, a preference bumps apparent quality by 1 level. This is usually a smaller effect that doubling the item’s base value. The exception being the bump from Exceptional (x5) to Masterful (x12), but overall I figure I’ll please far more dwarves by sticking to higher-quality drinks.

The wiki claims dwarves will drink water in preference to alcohol if their favorite drink isn’t available, but I’m pretty sure that’s BS. I’ve never seen any evidence of this.

Seriously. The only time I’ve had dwarves not drink alcohol is when they are sick and need water brought to them to recover. I’ve created many a well in my fortresses, and all it’s really been good for is a hangout spot for lazy dwarfs and a potential flooding problem if I screwed up the plumbing.

Fierce with the crops!

That looks awesome! I didn’t know StoneSense followed along with you as you played. That makes getting into DF 2010 (again!) really tempting.

Brilliant. Can’t wait for more.

Very nice. Though being able to see through z-layers is one of my bigger issues, rather than just an isometric view.

Woah… I haven’t tried getting back into DF just because initial setup is so daunting. That Lazy Newb Pack looks amazing!

Folks - a kind passerby has provided me a Mac version of my tutorial build and world. Would anyone be able to:

  1. Check that it doesn’t have any virusy malarky going on
  2. Confirm that it works ok on a Mac?

You can get it here.

Also, anyone got an ideas on a good file host? Ideally free, or very cheap over a year.

Dropbox is pretty good, I think. It allows hotlinking, and seems to be ad-free. The free version gives you 2GB of storage space. Although the website pushes its dropbox synching software, it is in fact optional; you can upload files through the web-interface like any other filehost. You can create an account though this link:

Yup - but I understood that public sharing of files was for a limited time only - I don’t want to keep having to re-set the file to public…?

I’d say put up a couple mirrors. Use em all.

If you want to put up mirrors, use something like Multiupload to make your job easier.

Ah, sweet, rezaf.

Great tip - thanks Rezaf. If the file works ok on the Mac I’ll do jus that!
