Your trade depot needs ramps between it and each edge of the map. Stairs don’t work, doors get in the way(?). When caravans were around you needed a corridor 3-wide, but that’s unneccessary nowadays. Also, D doesn’t work until the depot is actually built.

If there are any new DF players in this thread, this tutorial series may be of service to you:

Wow, Dwarf Fortress has really changed since I last played! I think you were meaning to link this though.

D’oh! Stupid Clipboard!

Heh, thanks for the correction. :)

It rejects regions I believe because sometimes a region that is generated doesn’t either match with the regions around it (hill’s river’s etc) or its because there was an error in the regions generation, like a rule got broken in the coding! not for sure about it but it seems that I have heard Toady One mention that sometime!

Another dumb question: I got the Lazy Newb pack, but the version of dwarf therapist included doesn’t work! Is that expected? Should I just wait patiently for a compatible one to appear?

edit: NM a PC reboot fixed it.

IIRC it requires .net 3.5 or something.

IS the LNP up to date now?

I believe so they just pushed v8.4 yesterday with 31.21

Yep, I can confirm the new LNP is working fine, including the included Therapist version.

I fired it up last night for the first time since DF2010 came out.

It did not end well:

I seem to have forgotten how water works. I thought I’d redirect the river to create a waterfall and moat at the front of my entrance. Seems the waterfall filled up the moat and overflowed into the rest of the map. Should have built the floodgates first I guess. Whoops.

In happier news, I have a new puppy.

I wanted to like this, I really did. But it’s just Too Much.

I still think it’s a cool concept though.

Diagonals are the key to stopping the pressure, unless that’s been changed. What you want to do isn’t this:

RIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVER
RIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVER
RIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVER
                        XXX
                        XXX
                        XXX
                        XXX
                        XXX
                        XXX
                        XXX
MOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOAT
MOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOAT
MOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOAT

but rather this:

RIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVER
RIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVER
RIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVERRIVER
                        XXX
                        XXX
                        X X
                         X
                        X X
                        XXX
                        XXX
MOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOAT
MOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOAT
MOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOATMOAT

That break in the middle will ensure that the pressure coming from the river is neutralized and won’t fill the moat. Keep in mind though that any drop in Z-levels also creates pressure, so the break needs to be in the lowest level you’re trying to fill. I found this one out the hard way when trying to fill a well on my bedroom level.

Totally agree, but I encourage you to stick with it a bit. The rewards are pretty awesome, not much like it in the current gaming line up. Watching the FogeyGaming vids and using the wiki is a good way to get started. Settle in a totally serene area with a brook, and you can get the general feel of the game without too much disaster. Once you get the hand of keeping your dwarves alive by meeting basic needs of food/shelter/water its much easier to start to peel away the layers of all the different systems.

For many its definitely not for them, but your interest seems somewhat piqued by your comments in the other thread, so if a little push helps you discover your inner neck-beard, I’m pushing.

Calistas needs to update his tutorials!!!

The FogeyGaming and other youtube tutorials linked from the LazyNewbPack thread on the bay12 forums are quite helpful, and might encourage you to stick with it longer.

After trawling the forums, I also came upon what appears to be a most excellent font if you are using TrueType font support: http://www.dafont.com/london-between.font (use the LondonTwo.ttf version). It looks excellent so far in the Ironhand graphics pack!

I will update the tutorials one day - probably when gameplay takes a fairly significant leap. Right now you can play my tutes and then work out the latest version with wiki help etc. It’s a lot of work to redo them!

Perhaps I will…your encouragement makes me want to give it another go.

Lesson learned from my first fortress in DF2010: a well stocked hospital is important. So are coffins.

Hey, I’ve just reclaimed a fortress for the first time ever.

My dwarves seem very, very reluctant to use any of the existing infrastructure - bedrooms, workshops, levers, etc. I know I need to reclaim goods I want them to use, but do I need to do anything to get them use use the old workshops?

Most of them are not particularly happy at the moment and that may be something to do with having to battle a forgotten beast upon arrival and then having to build a tomb to bury their 50 or so predecessors…not sure if that is affecting them, but they use anything new that I build no probs.
