Is there a program that combines Dwarf Therapist with the ability to analyze your dwarves?
I posted this over on the Dwarf Fortress forums. I figure it might be of interest to folks here.
Hi all, I’m TinyPirate, you may remember me from some Dwarf Fortress tutorials.
Well, I’m currently working on a pretty awesome new project, which I can’t speak to in detail just yet, but which offers a pretty cool opportunity for Dwarf Fortress players: I’m looking to get a half-dozen, maybe more, cool DF anecdotes illustrated by Tim Denee, the guy behind the awesome Oilfurnace and Bronzemurder DF comics. Yes! Your name could end up attached to some story artifying by Tim!
If you’d like a shot at having a DF story of yours illustrated you need to:
- Write a reply here telling Tim and I your awesome, funny, sad or silly anecdote from DF. I’m talking things like your fortress being terrified of a giant who, it turns out, is armed with a sock, your fortress being destroyed by zombie mussels, that sort of stuff.
- Tim and I will be the final arbiters on ‘cool stories’. Tim will turn the ones we chose into one-page panels of art and text.
- You can tell me about stories that aren’t yours, but I can only use them if I can get hold of the owner of the anecdote.
- Be prepared to receive a PM from me if chosen so I can grab your real (or not real) name for an acknowledgement line.
- Get your anecdote here in the next 4 to 6 weeks.
I’m happy to answer any questions or provide any clarification and in a month or so I’ll be able to announce the project the art is part of more fully. Until then, I hope to read some awesome contributions soon!

I thought you were announcing your new YouTube video series of tutorials! Your Dwarf Fortress tutorials guided me through my only playthrus I ever did quite a while ago. They were very well done and even I could figure out enough to get through most of them. If I could only figure out the way the armies worked I would have probably made it further. Maybe sometimes soon again!
Unfortunately, I don’t have anything remotely interesting that has happened in my DF attempts. Really looking forward to this new project and seeing what folks come up with, though!
Some guy on reddit just had his new Queen show up. His new Vampire Queen. His new Vampire Queen with 55,746 kills.
Probably the first royal I wouldn’t actively try and kill.

She killed north of 34,000 Elves. I think I like her.
Haha holy crap, that’s amazing.

Paradox needs to get a hold of Dwarf Fortress and marry it into one of their grand scope games - The stories it would produce would probably melt the universe…
DO YOU FOOLS NOT SEE HOW AWESOME THIS GAME IS? IT IS BEYOND ALL OTHER GAMES!
DWARF FORTRESS IS NOT HERE FOR YOU – YOU ARE HERE FOR DWARF FORTRESS

I have not played DF for a long time. Once upon a time I created an elaborate death trap for royals. It consisted of locking them in their rooms and turning on some pumps to flood the place. It worked beautifully except for one long term problem. I stopped getting immigrants. I was told that this was because there were too many deaths at my fort.
How is this resolved now? Can you kill them without consequences? If not, how do you deal with them?
I had my dorfs build the head of a dragon, with pumps to bring magma up to it which then ran down through the mouth, into a reservoir to be pumped back up, to make a “fire breathing” stone dragon.
I thien used bridge-apults to fire nobles through the mouth, so that they would splat some distance away, on fire.
That seemed to work.

Yes they die, but how about the immigration effect or is that a problem now? Another strategy I did was simply lock them in their rooms with plenty of food or just lock up their enforcer and totally ignore their edicts.
I don’t believe the “death makes immigrants too scared to show up” mechanics have changed at all. But it’s not a permanent thing. If a bunch of dwarves die you might not see any immigrants for a while but they’ll come back sooner or later. Also dwarves can have children now, so what you’re lacking in migrants you’ll make up for in children growing into adults.

They could always have children, but they take a lot of time to become adults.

In Dwarf Therapist news it looks like they might be working on a squad interface for working on your military. Though that may not cover equipment assignments etc, just making and assigning dwarfs to the squad.

I like how you make it sound like a bug Mr. "Hi, I murdered the most visible members of my community and now nobody else wants to come and play. "
I had a nice little fortress going until I forgot to wall off an underground cave complex before a giant cave croc crawled up. They managed to subdue him with only their fists, but not before half their numbers died.
The rest just stood around blindly pounding on the unconscious croc with their fists till I got bored and abandoned them to their insanity.
Tried reclaiming the fortress but it just locks up DF when I try to save the new reclaimed fortress =(
Man the Forgotten Beasts are a real pain. Some are worthless and weak like the blob made of water that slithered out of the depths and died in one hit when someone punched his head clean off.
Then there was the crazy lizard thing with the weird dust on it. My military beat it down after a fairly epic battle, and I thought all was ok. Then I realized half of my military dwarves were covered in the strange dust. Then I realized THEIR FLESH WAS ROTTING OFF. :( My Chief Medical Dwarf was busy hacking off rotten bits for months, and the miasma smell STILL hasn’t quite worked its way out of the hospital. It also decimated my population of war dogs since most of them were assigned to my military dwarves and helped in the fight. Luckily I had some puppies stashed away in a cage to repopulate the place.
I’ve never had a problem with “too much death.”
Either I’m getting immigrants, or everyone’s dead. No problem.
Clearly I wasn’t killing enough nobles.

Or they can just work with the Ad Libs company.

Started a new fort just to tool around, first spring, 81 giant mosquitoes (A huge monster in the shape of a mosquito. Her chitin is black. Her eyes are black) have killed 7 of my dogs…
…and this is why I love DF

The giant mosquitoes was a rather infamous bug, now squashed in the new version 34.02.

Perfect timing for me, I just lost my latest fortress last night when two necromancers showed up with an army of undead dwarves and elves. One dumb recruit ran out despite orders and was promptly hacked apart and promptly raised on the spot into multiple zombies (legs/torso + hand/arm); after that things just snow balled out of control.
What’s weird is the two necros were quickly caught by cage traps, but stuff still kept coming back from the dead almost as soon as it hit the floor.
