Awesome. I’d been refreshing the page and saw stuff come up yesterday morning, but it wasn’t order-able yet.
Order placed! Perhaps I can survive more than 6 dwarf years.
Bought, and have started a fortress using the instructions in the book. So far having a blast.
I tried to get into dwarf fortress a few times in the past using various youtube tutorials, but having to pause the video and replay it constantly gets annoying and time consuming.
Great job! Can’t wait to get through the rest of the book.
Bought too. For anyone on the fence the code 4CAST should give 50% off at oreilly.
Edit: Oh and I was impressed to see recent changes like minecarts in there! Looking forward to more updates.
The code didn’t work for me, paul_chambers. Too bad. I’ll buy this eventually, but half-off made it a GET RIGHT NOW!

It’s for ebooks only. The code, that is.
Yay! Thanks guys! Appreciate folks giving it a go. If you feel inclined pleased review the game on Amazon and/or O’Reilly :)
I’m really pleased about this. A lot of people on the DF forum an reddit aren’t understanding just how hard DF is for normal people. They think that the wiki and vids are enough - but many, MANY, people have bounced off the game’s complexity. I had hoped (and I hope it’s true for you newbs trying DF) that the book will help explain and provide context for all the decisions and buttons pushed :)

I bought the eBook last night directly from O’Reilly as well!
I’ve tried to get into DF in the past but never made it very far – hoping your book will help. :)
I’m still working on the world generation though. So far I’ve generated 4 worlds using the settings in chapter 2 but I can never find a recommended site that has Flux Stone using the Site Finder settings outlined on page 14. Generating a 5th world now as I type this.

You can get pregenerated worlds with good sites check out the 2012 cookbook thread or files on the repository!
And really your first bunch of forts will end in fun, try settling in a serene area with a brook trees and soil as you learn what to focus on.
You don’t need flux stone or magma or adamantine or whatever to have fun in Dwarf Fortress. Just pick a site and try to survive as long as you can with what you have.
I never really understood people’s obsession with finding “the perfect site”; especially newer players who don’t specifically have megabuilds in mind. I always had the most fun picking a terrible site and trying to make it work.

I had this exact same problem. After generating 15 worlds with absolutely no flux, I scoured the official forums and learned a few things:
[ul]
[li]The finder only searches some limited number of levels below the surface.[/li][li]There’s likely a layer of marble way below the surface at most sites.[/li][li]Having the mineral setting at “everywhere” causes surface (first however many layers that finder searches) flux to be either extremely rare if not completely non-existent on all maps. This is either a bug or a feature. I’ve pointed it out to Calistas already.[/li][li]Changing the mineral setting to “frequent” will give you metric assloads of surface flux.[/li][/ul]
You have two choices:
[ul]
[li]Generate a world with “frequent” minerals.[/li][li]Fuck it and play some site without surface flux in one of your existing worlds. You won’t need flux for your first several because you’ll have fun long before you can put them to use.[/li][/ul]
I’ve been alerted to a bug whereby if you chose the max mineral settings it messes with flux stone generation - GO FIGURE. Please try one-step lower on mineral generation.
I’ll get this into the next release. Very annoying.
Edit: Oops, Tiohn describes it all as well. Yes. Very annoying.
Sorry to keep harping on this little issue, but it’s telling me 4CAST is an invalid code. I’m trying to buy the $15.99 ebook version. Oh well. If someone else has had it work, let us know.
Congrats, Calistas! I hope it’s a huge success for you.
Looks like the code has expired. I used it on the 29th.
