That is a good deal! I hope that’s a good thing!

Bought for eight dollars!

Sorry if your family go into a depression spiral as a result.

If it’s any consolation I also bought the version that will go out of date.

That’s the stuff! Can’t wait to strike the latest version of DF with Calistas’ handy new pick!

Thanks, and thanks! I’m sure I’ll survive :D

My goal is MOAR DF PLAYERS, so I don’t resent a good deal now and then! I do want to see the book on BoingBoing or RPS or Penny Arcade though - I know so many people have bounced off DF in the past that I’m hoping if a whole lot of people hear about it, and give DF a go, it will be a nice boost to the community. Well see!

Calistas, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have purchased at the full price. So in my case it counts as a plus rather than a minus for you.

Oh, and so far I’m liking the book. Seems like a more in-depth version of your tutorials on your blog, and those were outstanding. Good job!

Ditto.

Hehe no worries. I don’t mind what people buy it at - as long as people enjoy it and get a kick out of the Dwarfiness of it all! And especially if they write a nice review somewhere :D

Glad you’re all finding it useful!

I bought it also. Reading the Dimension of Omen has got me wanting to play it again but i couldnt get the hang of the military stuff.

Calistas, I assume you would like typos/problems reported to you. Any preference on how I should send them to you?

Calistas, this is great stuff. So very readable and approachable.

A comment: I generated four or five worlds following your guidelines and never did get a successful site found using the parameters you listed for the site finder.

Not griping or anything. I changed the parameters a little and found something that’s certainly suitable for a doomed first attempt fortress. I mention it to either find out if I did something wrong or perhaps see if it’s something you’d want to update if there was a mistake in the text.

Great work! A public service to all of gamerdom!

The world doesn’t have enough DF writing in it. For some reason Maximum PC never talks about the perfect DF computer build.

I have the ebook, but for some reason feel DF should be read about on Dead trees. Just don’t tell the elves.

Already got you covered.

Yeah. Trust DF to throw up a curly weird bug!

Thanks for the kind words! Keep us posted on your progress, especially if you are new!

Boughted also. Looks like a pretty great way to spend a lot of lazy Sunday mornings :)

It is better than a hangover! Bar cleared! ;)

Played around with the most recent version after a long absence from DF.

Is there any way to build a remotely safe well currently?
I’m in the process of abandoning the first fortress I created because everybody and their dogs (literally!) were drowning in the well I built, and everyone that did not drown lost a friend or lover and is now throwing tantrums. I don’t masses of dwarves and even pets falling into the well in earlier versions.
Is it better to just have the dwarves drink from a pool outside?

I typically make a cistern that I close off from the water source
With floodgates and stick a well underground with floors of glass!

But how does the fact that it’s closed off from the main water source prevent the dwarves from toppling into the well?
For what it’s worth, my water came from an actual stream, but the channel to it was closed off with a total of three floodgates.

There’s always the risk that dwarves will dodge into a well in the course of their travails. For this reason you want to keep wells somewhat off the main thoroughfares and perhaps spread them around. Wells can be stacked on on top of the other, which does provide some opportunities for functional wells on numerous floors - so long as there is water at the bottom in the end.

To be really safe create a well cistern and cover the floor in up-down stairs and provide an escape route. You my also want to be able to flush the well cistern out through a grill or fortification (will sieve babies out hopefully) at will.

I think SOME risk is totally ok, but I had like ten dwarves drown in the well in relatively quick succession. It’d be cool if Toady could change the well mechanic either to the old way where falling into one was impossible or at least very unlikely, or allow for some safety measures, for example allowing a floor grating in the open space tile of the well.
I’ll of course keep the fact that it works as it does now in mind when designing my next well, providing safety routes and whatnot.

But water seems to be a serious problem now in multiple other ways.
For instance, I had several caravan members drown in a pond close to my fortress.
When it dried out in the hot summers, that meant a lot of free stuff for me, but why does it happen in the first place? I never saw that in old versions.

Anyway, back to the lake, is it sufficient to have ramps (or even stairs) bordering the cistern from which you can get to safety?
I get that babies will still be a problem, but I’m not sure I could do anything about that anyway - the first thing I “hear” about someone drowning is when his cold, dead body is discovered. Is there a message setting you can turn on which will alert you when someone fell into a body of water?
