They are going to do work on the interface, though we don’t know to what extent. The screenshots don’t show any change because afaik Tarn hasn’t even started work on it yet. He was finishing the initial release of the villain update first.

But the 2D facelift isn’t just about changing the art style, it’s about opening the game up to more people, making it accessible, and fixing legacy issues.

“All of the accessibility questions for Dwarf Fortress are on the table,” Adams said. “We’re going to look at the interface and the menu structure and common problems that new players have that make them bounce off the game.”

From the PC Gamer interview.

We haven’t promised to get down into the deepest menus yet as it might become overwhelming, but the top-level fort mode actions will be much improved. This includes clickable menus and also better abilities to select digging designations and other areas with the mouse etc.

From the Reddit AMA, regarding extended mouse support.

I remember reading something that said the version number is the completion percentage? I could be wrong, but 0.47.01 means we are almost half way there! ;)

Only another decade and a half to go!

Back in 2011, Tarn said 1.0 would take at least another 20 years. So another decade and a half from now would barely even be a delay :)

Wonder if Tarn knows George R. R. Martin?

Clickable? That’s not real DWARF FORTRESS. That is for elves.

Let’s hope they’ve taken the Year 2038 Problem into account.

I think they’re already protected against possible 2038 issues because

I thought this gentleman needed money, like right now. Of all the games to release EA, this seems like a poster child for it.

Well, I’ve got tons of time on my hands now. Time to choose an auspicious symbol for my quarantine fort…

New dev log showing the WIP new interface:

Dwarf Fortress now has tooltips… Never thought I’d see the day.

People use the mouse?

They will now!

That is not going to scale nicely to a 4k tv and have controller support, is it. :)

Damn that looks pretty good!

Dude’s rocking back & forth is giving me motion sickness…stay still

Looks promising though.

Wow, I never thought I’d see the day. I might actually be able to play this game without wanting to actually kill someone!

I hope this really works out for them, and they make a ton of money on Steam. They certainly deserve it.

I don’t really find the videos that engaging, but I am fascinated with the idea of getting a easier entry into Dwarf Fortress.

Also, despite my general dislike of EA titles, I thought they needed the money, now… it seems like this would be a perfect candidate for that. Sure you only get one first impression, but it’s not as if we don’t know there is a full game here.

Maybe he his sitting on one of those big balls for strengthening the back.
