Eventually you got eaten by a giant demon. There wasn’t really any way around it.

Countertunnels.

“Fire break” tunnels filled with traps, so the sappers break through and are shredded.

Fun repair jobs using constructed walls…or magma that then hardens.

WATER-FILLED COUNTERTUNNELS STOCKED WITH ZOMBIE CARP.

I thought that was linked to a certain metal which you weren’t supposed to mine, admantium or whatever?

Yeah, but once you find the adamantium the King arrives and starts demanding that you mine it, so you have to manage well (kill the king and make it look like an accident) to avoid death spiral. Besides, it’s not like you could resist mining it! It’s so shiny!

Those dwarves. You’d think they’d have learned something from Moria.

They did: Being devoured by horrors from the deep is awesome.

Everyone remembers Moria. The peaceful Dwaven cities that stuck to making microcline goblets? Not so much.

Argh, I keep wanting to play this again, but the fact that there will probably be a major release in the next couple of months keeps me away!

Yes, it’s hard to justify committing to a fortress when I know an update is coming… I don’t think the upcoming version will be an awe-inspiring metamorphosis on the scale of z-levels. However, as other posters have said, I’m hoping that the caverns will provide a balanced challenge, and make a 5 hour+ investment into a fortress rewarding beyond “wow, it took forty five minutes and a handful of third-party utilities, but I finally optimized processes on the secondary textile production line.”

I just realized that apeshit is something Toady should consider!
When you now have an ape that you can butcher and extract his intestines, where’s the apeshit go?
Why have animals and dwarves no digestion process?
Why can’t I construct elaborate water flushed toilets for all my dwarves?
Why doesn’t a dwarf taking a dump in the common room after having a dwarven chili endanger my entire fortress because his excrements will produce miasma?
Why can’t I fuel my smelters with logs, coal and/or apeshit?
Why won’t my best mason lock himself up in his workshop muttering to himself crazily while being busy creating a statue made of apeshit?
Why can’t I then sell such statue to the nature-loving elven traders for a fortune?
Instead of improving the interface or crazy stuff like that, Toady should get the above into the game asap!

“wow, it took forty five minutes and a handful of third-party utilities, but I finally optimized processes on the secondary textile production line.”

Heh.

  1. Happen across something DF related that catches my eye. Usually a gaming news item or new mod or something similar.

  2. Start a fort, do badly while relearning the tricks. After a few hours, have a highly optimized machine. Optimized to run forever with minimal or no control input, not for higher production or anything actually useful.

  3. Grow the fort to get a king, lay out enough mine shafts to find any map features present. After a while I’m telling myself “Sure, I could build a megaproject but I’ll do that NEXT fort, and I’ll use the finder to make sure I get magma! For now, let’s just get the king.”

  4. Put the first fort aside as soon as the king arrives despite hefty stockpiles and some highly skilled mans. Because damn, DF runs a lil slow with that many dwarves.

  5. Do a series of increasingly difficult embarks, restarting every time the hard part is over.

  6. Wait 6-12 months and go to step 1.

I was keen on trying a tundra wasteland ice fortress but it was very, very hard. Water could only be got through collapsing roofs, or something. Jeez, tough start. Half my starter dwarfs died to wolves in the first few days…

I’m not sure if you’re joking or not, because I’d actually like that in the game. I’ve thought about it before, and it would make running water even more important to a fortress, and give you at least one new job to assign until you have automated toilets and don’t need to have guys go huck buckets of dwarf shit into the river. Plus it would go well with his new dwarf cleanliness update where they use soap now. The more I think about it the more I want it.

Heh, that’s the funniest part about the DF development process, when you can propose something like I did above and people can’t be sure whether it’s in jest or serious. And after the stuff about wounds and growing hairs, I’d not be surprised if it was actually high on Toady’s ToDo list.

Deleted: Double post. Sorry.

I’d like sewage systems if the wouldn’t be required to take up an entire z-level to work. running water (no doubt from the top of a river to the bottom) under all your floors to make nice tidy long-drops would be a z-axis nightmare!

I always have a z-level reserved for water transport and another reserved for magma transport (assuming I have magma) anyway.

Anyone who does not reserve a z-level for the transportation of liquids is a fucking neophyte.

Yeah, but now you will need TWO levels reserved. Ideally you would dig service tunnels and run pipes instead. Haha. Plumbing Fortress! Oh no, overpressure in basement level 15’s sewage system! Eeep, miasma!

You wouldn’t need two levels if you had crossover pipes of some kind. Which would need to be very carefully laid or OH FUCK THERE’S SHIT IN THE WATER, with total horror and near-instant death spiral ensuing :-O

…actually, I guess raw sewage in the water was normal for just about all early towns and cities…

Heh, Toady works exactly as you guys.

Should he implement stuff like that, he’d not only have channels that can “power” toilets, he’d go on to create pipes. Then make a model for fluid pressure so you could pump water across z levels in the pipes (this already works outside of pipes), create a stability model so pipes of some materials would break with too much pressure etc.
Then he would create diseases that could spread out of a broken sewage pipe.
Then he’d cause dwarves to demand different toiletries (and nobles demanding stuff like elvenskin loo paper), he’d model absorbency for all valid materials for toilet paper crafting and so on and so forth…

So, hopefully he waits some more versions before beginning to implement this… :p
