Also, it’s a fairly reliable way to get rid of wanted dwarfs, if you aren’t paying attention!
I seem to be losing an inordinately large number of dwarves to training accidents lately. They’re wearing mostly iron plate with gauntlets/boots/helms/etc to match, and I’ve let them build up a bit of a wrestling skill before arming them, yet they’re still impaling each other left and right in the barracks :/
I also have a handful of dwarves that don’t seem to train no matter what I do. They’ve been “Recruits” for years now. They’ve got spears, other members of the same squad train, yet these dolts just stand around grooming their beards or something. I’ve tried rearranging their squads, putting them in their own squad, changing out their weapons, etc, but these assholes just will NOT train. Argh!
Succession game in new build!

Injuries to the neck, brain or spine will never heal and prevent further sparring. Sometimes those wounds are in very light gray and hard to make out.
Also, if dwarves pick up stuff while wrestling (like a second glove or other pieces of armour) they won’t drop that and will not gain skills in weapon training until you you empty them out (no weapons, no armour) and reassign everything after they dropped their stuff.
In the next release they should drop that stuff though!

Heh, yeah, the one he supposedly said was going to be released around christmas. And (by now) obviously it was not christmas 2009.
I dunno, what I always loved about Tarn’s approach to developing the game was that he was more or less constantly putting out his alpha versions.
Now there hasn’t been anything in almost one and a half years, which I find a bit disheartening.

He was ill for some time around Christmas.
You should email him and tell him how he owes you a new version.

I already did, and he gave me a full refund.

Well, at that price, a refund can be a pretty big deal…
I’ve been back to playing again too… I’m very excited for the new release, although I wonder at all the strange new behaviors this added stuff will create.

Awesome, I’m glad it worked out for you. I hope you’ll consider repurchasing when the new version comes out. I need someone to play multiplayer against.

I’m sure he got back 100% of the download price.
I traded a granite amulet inlaid with cat bone for my copy. I won’t be needing it back.
Shame on you, it should have at least been bristling with something, I dunno possibly spikes.
That would make it artifact quality! You think I’m going to trade that away?

This sounds fucking awesome! Clearly he should focus on requiring you to trim beards instead of fixing shit like this.
Is there yet a reasonable way to tell a dwarf to stand on the NONDROWNINGDEATH side of a grate when constructing it?
You have to be careful when constructing stuff, build something on the other side or drop something on the other side that will obstruct him.
Why would the other side of a grate be dangerous? Any liquid is going to flow through and supposedly kill him anyway. If you’re talking about later flooding the area there are building techniques that allow you to do that, but you need to do some prep work before hand to manage the dwarf and force him to build on the correct side.
The trick I read for things like that was to designate the spot where you don’t want them to stand as a wall, then suspend the construction of the wall so that it’s not actually built.
