It’s nice that Internet Man thinks something that he isn’t working on should have been done by now.
Actually, Toady does does promise something when you donate. He promises a note on his wall of donators, if you fancy, and some little ASCII art. He delivered on both for me.

Good point. I just re-read my ASCII art (do all of them come with a story?) and it made me happy. I would say that we share them, but I cannot bear the thought of infidels such as Pogo defiling my Dwarf Fortress ASCII art with their dirty eyes and unclean thoughts.

Can I defile your ASCII art, please, tiohn? I promise to be respectful. As in: Can Toady add toilets? It would be SO COOL!

Now for your ASCII Art Reward (story by Threetoe):
###//////U,...,.g.,..
"You killed my father, goblin scum," scream Olsar, his fist gripping
the hilt of his sword with the power of fury. The starved goblin
threw a rock down the gravelly slope at his pursuer. Olsar's mouth
foamed as he shouted his rage. At last the goblin reached the
mountain trail and trotted away from the slope as fast as its
exhausted limbs could carry it.
The iron sword of Olsar's father crashed onto the trail as Olsar
pulled himself upward. "You will die," cried Olsar. "I will chase
you to the Underworld and back!"
Thanks again,
Tarn and Zach
Aw, what the hell. I don’t care who defiles it, as it will always be special to me.

This isn’t actually true. The huge amount of time between releases is a relatively new phenomenon.
How bizarre. Everyone is EXPECTING a new version because everyone knows Toady is working on it. Ergo, there is expectation. He’s also mentioned possible release dates in the past and we’re well past those.
I think it’s ridiculous that the wait for the new version cannot be mentioned at all. I’m well aware of what makes DF so good and why his development methods are part of that, but it’s also a little bit of a lie to suggest that DF is only good because he takes so long putting in all the random stuff. That’s not true because it wasn’t true in the past.
Nor was my comment anything more than a “I wish we were close to a release with all this new stuff”. If you don’t think I should be allowed to say that, you can fuck right off.

Also, Toady loves me more than you:

The squire raced through the haunted jungle on his pony. To the left
and right, goblins were closing in on him, mounted on ferocious
beak-dogs. Tears fell from the boy’s eyes, for Fantir, his master,
had fallen, ambushed by the very goblins that pursued him now. Trees
flew by as one of the goblins fired a deadly arrow, narrowly missing
the boy’s head. He looked down at the broadsword lying across his
lap. It was his master’s, and only a true knight could wield it.
The goblins drew closer. One beak-dog was so close, the squire could
hear the clicking of its enormous jaws. The goblin took aim again
with its cursed bow, only an arm’s length away. The squire grabbed
the weapon and pulled the goblin to him. A passing tree dashed out
the goblin’s brains as the pony thundered by. The squire drew the
tired pony to a stop as the remaining goblins surrounded him.
Lifting up the sword he said, “My name is squire Dwan. You killed my
master. Prepare to die.”
Thanks again,

That’s not true because it isn’t true.

No, fair enough. “Only” has no place in that sentence. So “part of the reason why it’s so good is because he spends so long adding all this crazy detail”.
I don’t think he’s spent any significant length of time adding crazy (the implication is clearly “irrelevant”) detail. This version is an overhaul of the military/squad management, an overhaul of the combat/wounds, and an overhaul of the underground feature/creature generation. All of those are solid, worthwhile improvements. If he takes a couple of days while working on tissue layers and internal organs (the overhaul of which allows a multitude of non-flesh creatures and better simulation of oversized creatures, among other things) to make hair grow, it’s not a meaningful factor in the length of development.

No. The implication is not “irrelevant”, not at all. As an aside, can you fucking stop doing this? Respond to my words, not what you think I’m saying inside your head.

It’s an insane amount of detail. It’s a huge reason why DF is so fun. Insane does not mean “irrelevant”, it just means he goes to mind-boggling detail. Which even you, Mr “I must take the contrary position every day or I shall die of a heart attack”, cannot argue with.
Your words don’t make any damn sense otherwise. You’re complaining that a new version hasn’t come out yet even though you acknowledge that he is working hard to make the game better? What exactly would you have him do differently then?
Mr “I must take the contrary position every day or I shall die of a heart attack”
This is a lie. My opinions remain firm no matter who agrees or disagrees with me, and I am unaware of any studies linking stubbornness and blocked arteries.

My words don’t make any sense?
“I would like the new version to come out soon. It has been a long time since the last release.”
Christ, I suggest that it’s been a long time since the last release and people go nuts.
And I take issue with the idea that everything Toady does makes the game better. That is not true. He is not a design genius and sometimes things can be needlessly complex without adding anything interesting or fun. However, I will not know if that’s actually the case until I play the new version, so I’m not being critical.
Edit: And then, of course, you have to factor in that Toady’s code is a bit of a mess, as is his approach to programming itself. That’s just the way things are and is unlikely to change. However, he does suffer from feature creep. Previously he used to add all this stuff and release a version, then add more and release, etc. Now he adds and adds and adds and adds and adds and finds more stuff to add. Will it work? Who knows - probably. But I don’t feel it’s particularly insane for me to suggest that there are more efficient ways to approach things.
And I say this in full knowledge of the fact that it’s his pet project, nothing more and nothing less.
