Yes, that’s… exactly what we’ve known all along. Brilliant.
You couldn’t have known squat, unless it was fact. Now, please show me this FACT that I missed.
…and no, stupid conjecture laden forum diatribes by a bunch of wankers who are not on the inside, are not fact.
I’ll be waiting.
Which game?
Isn’t Madden online for the PS2? I don’t see how this is anything new.
Exactly. It doesn’t say anything about it being Madden, does it? Nope, it doesn’t. And unless it does, its not fact.
Derek,
I’m probably just not understanding you. I’m no expert when it comes to PS2’s online portfolio, but EBgames shows Madden 2003 as an online game.
Ed Fries laid out the problems between EA and MS in an IGN interview that I snipped here.
So my statement about the story is wow. big scoop. EA releases a “top game” online for PS2 only. There’s just no surprise. Unless its The Sims Online. Then that’s just sad.
Just sounds like EA taking a jab as MS, since they won’t treat them extra special.
“Well we will just take our game elsewhere…NA NA NA” sticks tongue out
Madden 2003 was online for PC, online for PS2, but not online for Xbox. So, what’s new here?
That’s what we’re all desperately trying to figure out.
I don’t get it either. The only difference between this year and last is that most of the EA Sports games are apparently going online on PS2. FIFA, Tiger Woods, etc. Not sure about NHL though…
Also, for those that don’t know, there’s a hard cutoff date for Madden 2003 being playable online. It’s printed on the box I believe. Sometime in August, EA may remove the connectivity from last year’s version. Most likely to coincide with the release of 2004’s game. That was a major sticking point with Microsoft as well.

sigh
Its like this see, we all knew about the EA/MS rift over XBox Live!, right? right.
We also know that EA said it wasn’t going to support its games on the XBox Live! (at least thats what they said I think) right? right.
Until today, I knew nothing about what they were going to do, how they were going to do it and if in fact they’d really go up against MS as threatened.
Today, I came across a link (which I posted) which indicated that, they would in fact carry out their threat. That link didn’t say which game. You ladies say Madden (or whatever) and I’m saying unless and until EA says which game it is, it cannot be treated as fact.
Now, if in fact EA has posted elsewhere that the game in question is in fact Madden, I want to see it please - because I obviously missed it (highly unlikely).
Further along…if EA is putting Madden on PS2 online and not XBox, its a clear indication that they’re serious about their threat to MS. Either that, or they’re using this one game as a bargaining chip to get MS to rethink its position on the handling of XBox Live!. That of course is not going to happen because I don’t see MS opening up that system to outsiders i.e. allow publishers to control the content etc etc.
MS is losing money hand over fist on the XBox and indeed their XBox Live! backend. As such, they’d be insane to give EA - or anyone for that matter - any sort of revenue and/or content based access to it.
Knowing MS, the only way I see this working - if they in fact fold on this decision - is to give the publisher (someone big like EA or those squeakers over at EIDOS) a break on the game royalties they have to pay to MS. That too, is a stretch since thats where the XBox revenue primarily comes from, seeing that the HW is a loss leader.
Well, as highly unlikely as it may seem, you missed it. EA had already announced that their sports lineup would be online exclusively through PS2 a week or two ago. Titles were named back in April I think with, as I noted, FIFA, Madden, Tiger…among them. I’m not sure how you ever got the impression they weren’t going to snub Live all along. They’ve never said otherwise and I don’t think it was ever really in doubt.
Besides…Madden, as noted, was online LAST YEAR already on PS2 and not on Xbox. What more proof did you need that they weren’t all that interested in Live? I’ll dig around for the links when I have more time. There were definitely stories about this last month at the absolute latest.

I didn’t really think this was news. All of our EA Sports products starting with NCAA 2004 will be online for PS2 only. We’re not supporting Xbox Live this cycle. I thought we announced that a little while ago to the mags and the online press. Maybe we just didn’t do a good enough job getting the word out. Either way, it’ll be reiterated again tomorrow at Sony’s press conference.
OK, stay with me. I know that one or two EA games were already on PS2 online. I’m not talking about them. I’m talking about THIS YEAR’S shenanigans, not past news.

Thanks for the clarification Jim. From what I’ve been reading - especially the nonsensical and non-factual rubbish our friends here are fond of engaging in, it was hard to get a grip on exactly what the EA vs MS situation was in relation to this. I was definitely NOT under the impression that this was an all out Live! boycott by EA. Last I checked, they were at the threatening (Defcon 1) phase. Now it seems like full blown Defcon 5 to me :D
And whats wrong with that? EA is one of the big name companies out there and they seem to be creating good games lately (e.g. Def Jam, Madden, NBA Street).
I am actually suprised XBOX Live is doing well with all the game kicking, voice filtering, and the XBOX controller that feels like grabbing a fat man’s ass.
OK now wait a minute!!! How do you know this, huh? You been playing grabass with…thinking…Wumpus again? :D

I may be wrong, but I think you have the defcon scale reversed. But I think what all of us are saying is that there has never been any indication that EA was going to change their online strategy from last year. It was always assumed that this year MS would get the shaft and PS2 would get online games, including more titles. Battlefield 1942 is the only online game from EA that I think has ever been announced, and when they cancelled it a lot of people took that as proof that EA’s Xbox Live embargo was across the board and firm.
"And whats wrong with that? EA is one of the big name companies out there and they seem to be creating good games lately (e.g. Def Jam, Madden, NBA Street). "
I don’t really. EA is a big publisher and wants control in the online world too. MS has other plans. This has been brewing for awhile and EA is basically making their non-support of Live! official. My line was just a jab at the way EA sort of made the issue sound.
