It really is a bad cover.

Also, it’s about a planet of cat people who are really into vowels.

Years ago, Lt. Uhura befriended a diplomat from Eeiauo

Basically fanfic, and the writer probably also did Andre Norton Witchworld stuff with cats in it too.

That’s a hell of a thing to say. You’ve read it, I assume?

Long ago. I read a LOT of those Star Trek novels once upon a time. With VERY few exceptions they are lightly edited fanfic.

I’m sincerely hoping you aren’t Janet Kagan :)

No, just a Trek fan. I guess I’ve been lucky, I’ve read a lot of really good Trek books, can’t actually think of any that I’ve thought were uninteresting or bad. Many of those were by established authors like Diane Duane and Peter David, but I’ve dabbled in others.

And, just because it came up while I was googling about the book, I found a site that seems to consider it not only one of the top 25 Trek novels, but number 2 on that list!

25 Best Star Trek Books - The Best Sci Fi Books (best-sci-fi-books.com)

It is probably a site run by cats.

And on that planet they had a diplomat Eeiauo!

So it’s a Star Trek/Known Space crossover with Kzinti?

Wouldn’t be the first:

Also don’t forget the Caitians, another cat-like species found in Trek.

Yup. And there’s the Lyrans, though IIRC those are just the kzinti renamed for copyright reasons.

Well boy howdy! you learn something new every day! I only remember the Lyrans from Starfleet Battles.

Yup. An awful lot of what I know about Star Trek comes from Star Fleet Battles and/or Federation and Empire.

Carlos Ruiz Zafon’s The Shadow of the Wind is $3 on Bookbub today. It’s billed as book 1 of a series, but it’s a stand-alone novel. It’s light magical realism in Barcelona in the period just after the Spanish Civil War; a young man coming-of-age mystery. This is the English version. Highly recommended.

That feeling when you say “ooooooh, that sounds good”, and then you get this:

It’s a fantastic book, but like all books these days you might as well try the free sample first if you have time to read that today before the sale expires.

Lol I pass this stuff on cuz I already got!

Hey at least back in May 2019, looks like I paid 50 33% less for this book than the current sale price! Score!

You got it for $1.50? That’s a great price. I have the ebook version but I paid more for it. I also have the paper version, which is where I first read it.

Hey @scottgibson I know you are working on your Spanish. Have you tried reading any of this in Spanish?

I am about halfway through the Spanish version of La Sombra del Viento. But I admit I have been halfway through for a while. I can follow the grammar, but my vocabulary isn’t broad enough and it becomes tedious constantly looking up words. Of course that’s easier with the ebook form, so I should not complain.
