It’s book 36 out of 97. That makes me want to stay away from it. I haven’t read the first 35 yet!

I haven’t read them either, but I can safely assure you there is no chance it has anything to do with anything that happened in those other books.

I think most of those Trek books are pretty standalone though. At least the ones I’ve read. Kind of like the episodes themselves.

Anything worth getting in the latest Storybundle?

Truly Epic Fantasy Bundle

I’ve never heard of any of them, as usual.

As a general rule, I skip any bundle curated by Kevin J. Anderson, because his books are terrible so I assume his taste to be terrible as well. (And he usually puts a couple of his own books in there, though not in this case.)

I feel the same way. I tried to read one of his once and I couldn’t get beyond a few pages.

I don’t think of the story bundles as being a great deal. The minimum is $5 and that’s for four books. You have to go up to $15 to get all 13 books, and out of those how many will I actually read and enjoy? I’m more likely to jump on a Humble book deal that gives me a few books for $1.

They’re sometimes a great selection. But not often.

Okay, I’m going to break down and buy a Murderbot book because everyone here seems to like them AND because on sale for $3 does not seem like a total rip-off for a 150 page book.

If I feel cheated after reading it, I blame all of youse.

You definitely want to read the first book (All Systems Red) first, otherwise you might not be able to follow along with everything. It’s not absolutely necessary, but it’ll certainly be more enjoyable. I’m thinking you’ll probably still like Rogue Protocol as a standalone, but you should really read the other two first for the full effect.

Rogue Protocol is the 5th book and the first full novel length work in the series.

You want to start with the first novella, All Systems Red.

Note All Systems Red is currently on sale on Amazon for 3.99

Yes, I see it, thanks.

Note also that it frequently goes a lot lower, or at least has in the past. As a book 1 in a series, it will go on sale a lot more than the later books, but if you can be patient, it frequently falls to 1.99 as I recall.

The murderbot series Is awesome… buy it, you won’t be disappointed.

Well, you will feel cheated when you see the prices of the other 150 page books. That’s when I went the library route because I felt they were just too steep for what amounted to a 2-3 hour read.

But…but…these books are some of the best writing I have read in a decade and I wouldn’t hesitate at telling people to read them, just use the library if you can except for Rogue protocol which is pretty long at about 350 pages.

Martha Wells has been writing for decades now, so if you like Murderbot I can highly recommend her other stuff. (Well, unless you only read sci-fi for some reason. I think Murderbot’s the first time she’s done sci-fi outside of like, a couple Stargate tie-in novels.)

For three hours of entertainment, $10 is pretty par for the course, even cheap, nowadays. That seems unreasonable for the “best writing you’ve read in a decade?”

Sigh. This is why most writers have day jobs.

$10 felt steep for what were kindle novellas. I’d be happier paying that much for physical editions. Luckily I got all the short Murderbots free when Torr was giving them away to promote the latest book. Happily paid full price for it, and preordered the next entry.

Not for books it isn’t, especially in electronic form.

Thus proving my point.
