I can’t speak for the books, but I recall the TV series being better than I expected it to be.
Agreed. I went into the TV show with VERY low expectations, and while it was never going to win any awards, it was watchable. Hercules/Zena level watchable.
I read a bunch of Tekwar stuff as a preteen and enjoyed it, but that’s a useless recommendation because what the hell did I know as a preteen?
Interesting, I am a huge Tim Powers fan but I haven’t read those two, or really any of his science fiction I guess. May have to at least get that level.
So I just googled Tekwars and the prevailing opinion is Ron Goulart was the ghost writer.
Same. I think I’ve read just about all of his other books except for these early ones. It’s worth it for $1. Allen Steele is good too if you like near-future, realistic SF. It’s gritty stuff, the equivalent of steelworkers working on space stations.
I’ve not read a Piers Anthony book in over 40 years. I will be skipping those.
I have read those two Tim Powers novels and like everything he does they’re excellent. Not Last Call or Declare level, but quite enjoyable.
I can also highly recommend the Yolen novels on offer. I read a few of the TekWar books back in the mists of time and liked them then but cannot guarantee they’re worth reading now - I was much less picky as a kid. I have no opinion on the Piers Anthony series, having skipped that one, but it’s fucking bizarre how they’re structuring those. Books 5 and 6 at the base tier, 1 and 3 at the middle, and 2 and 4 at the max? What?
I was pleasantly surprised they were in the $1 tier. That tier has 4-5 books I’m interested in, so quite a good return for $1.

Declare is Powers’s Dune, a once-in-a-career book.
Gotta say, I would consider and/or a read a Ron Goulart novel long before one with Shatner’s byline.

Yep. Shatner wrote character descriptions and plot outlines and Ron Goulart fleshed them out into novels. At least, that was the case in the mid-90s, not sure if it’s true of all of them.
Orbital Decay is a really good book.
My brain is doing this thing where it keeps thinking you’re trying to convince me that Robert Goulet ghostwrote all the Tekwar novels. And now I’m a little sad that my brain is wrong.
The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle is $3 today on US Kindle Store.
It’s completely fantastic. Highly recommend.
“You already own this item”.
Wow, you must have recommended it just as enthusiastically sometime in the past.

I have tons of unread Kindle books recommended in this thread that also need some catching up too. I am waiting to see when my Kindle backlogs will be more than my Games backlogs.

I grabbed it as well. It has received an impressive list of awards. Looking forward to reading it as well as the rest of the series.
