Naomi Novik’s latest for $4 today. I completely adored it. Possibly the worst wizarding school ever conceived (seriously, you might have had fantasies about studying at Hogwarts, but you wouldn’t want to attend the Scholomance), and a cranky protagonist who the world really, really wants to be a titanically evil sorceress and who is stubbornly refusing.
Scholomance is the name of instance in vanilla WoW. It was an evil wizarding school.
The idea significantly predates WoW:

It really does sound like a Victorian flight of fancy much more than any authentic folklore, though.
Not that there’s in principle anything wrong with Victorian flights of fancy.

Yeah, recently Tor gave the first four books away to promote the 5th book. And it is a no-brainer to pick up this 5th book at a sale price of $3!
