What! I thought caster was supposed to be the most OP way to play outside of a broken bleed/arc build.

It often is. You can wipe absolutely erase some bosses. But there are plenty of encounters which give you almost no time and space at range.

BTW, those overpowered bleed builds eventually run into a wall, too. Some important bosses don’t bleed. I think Elden Ring wants you to take a flexible approach.

I read up on the Wings a bit. I misread what you were saying - I saw ā€˜shield’ and I thought ā€˜melee’. It sounds like this is still something a pure sorcerer would use though. I guess since Fextra didn’t have a build focused on it, I couldn’t grasp its use! I also asked because I was considering swapping to a more sorcerer build so statements like yours give me pause.

What armor pieces are you wearing?

Nokkron Eternal City (Sacred Grounds) is stressing me the f*k out. I’m afraid of heights, not great at jumping, and man this city is hitting all those high anxiety buttons.

I always wear the heaviest armor I can without losing the medium roll. I don’t really care about the ā€œadds 2 Intā€ or whatever passives. Armor’s main job is to mitigate damage, and that’s how I look at it.

You can also take it a layer deeper and gear around poise breakpoints. 51 is the first important one, which will allow you to tank one regular hit without being interrupted.

Yep. I am however looking to model myself after some of you and would like to have something to shoot for. So I’m curious what you’ve got at this point in your Magery career :)

I have not cast a single spell the whole game and I got an awful lot of mileage out of Wing of Astel. Also Fallingstar Beast Jaw, another weapon that has some int scaling. I don’t even remember what I was using before that…

I’m wearing the Veterans set because the cape is so cool

I don’t think I have that yet.

Is that the place where there are 2 dragons close together or a different one? I killed one of them just before I was done for the afternoon.

I’ll have to check. Normally I was wearing the robes from Ranni when I completed her mission. It doesn’t have good physical defense but is good for other stuff. I switched it out for better physical defense and still got wiped.

Its the glintstone dragon adula, she lands when you go up to the church, and uses like magic breath on you, i plinked at her from a distance and kept running away, and finally finished her with my sword when i ran out of flasks, and discovered that she would have went down way faster if i had just used a sword from the start.

Expect a tough dragon.

Ah ok, I think I beat that one but haven’t tried the spell. I’ll have to check to make sure I have it.

My mage’s base loadout is Night’s Cavalry chest, Lionel’s Greaves/ Gauntlets, Sanguine Noble Hood. Mainhand is the Carian Regal Scepter and Wing of Astel, while offhand is Carian Knight’s Shield and a Seal of the Golden Order. That all adds up to a medium load at 25 endurance, with 51 poise.

I switch staves to the Lusat’s for fights when I am going to set up a one-shot bossmurder with Comet Azur.

I am so far behind the reat of you lol.

I finally managed to kill that annoying Leonine Misbegotten.

Then I met the Fell Omen. Stupidly, I was 500 runes away from levelling, and not paying attention to that when I met the Omen.

Runes lost.

Managed to get him to half health on my first attempt though, so feeling good lol.

Verdict on Wing of Astel for my Battlemage is still out but I only just acquired it. I’d been running with Moonveil most of the game thus far. And just recently I decided to respec and try out a few new wrinkles the most enlightening of which is running at Light Load rather than Medium and it’s a hell of a difference.

I still have a lot in Vitality so I’m not one-shot, and I might go back and draw some out of Intelligence (52) as I don’t expect to be using Comet as much though getting to use the Lusat Staff is pretty sweet too.

I’m all about the Night Comet / Staff of Loss synergy now. I’ll go with SoL in main hand and cast spells from my off-hand with Meteorite Staff or Lusat’s. And Moonveil, now Wing of Astel on my main hand switch to melee. But I couldn’t really achieve Light Load with Moonveil; WoA is a full 2 ā€˜weight’ lighter. So no I’m not wearing much in the way of Poise or even Resists / Damage Negation. But it’s very liberating to scoot around dodge and roll while firing off spells and some melee action when the time is right.

I’m not really feeling Astel’s ā€œNebulaā€ yet. Doesn’t seem to have much range, do great damage, and has a pretty long windup. I do love going to Moonveil as a finisher.

In my opinion the Wing works a lot better as a non-mage’s weapon despite the int requirement. I have a fairly high int skill but quite low mind. I never bother with staffs or spell slots or what have you, which makes the R2 on the wing kind of a godsend. If I had longer range spells to use then I wouldn’t find it nearly as useful, probably.

I put Flame of the Redmane on my spear, and played around for a bit yesterday. I’m not seeing it being all that special. I guess I have to find misercode or some other high crit weapon to really make it work, because I tried it on those spear knights that are kind of like mini-bosses. There’s two at Fort Gael, for instance, and it didn’t seem to stagger them at all.

On the other hand, when I was at Canor (sp?) Manor again, this thing does crazy damage to fingers, for instance. I found the boss there on the horse and beat them on my first try because apparently fire is good against them. But again, I don’t think I staggered the boss at all with Flame of the Redmane, plus it takes to long to use that skill it’s like inviting punishment so I only tried it twice.

Still, interesting that certain things are SOOOO much more vulnerable to fire than to magic. Good Stuff, even though it doesn’t seem to be overpowered.

I’m struggling with the final boss and Flames of Redmane does nothing for me. I’m going to respec to Int and cheese this.

let’s talk about those little finger monsters. They are worse than SPIDERS! I saw 2 in some mage tower, and they let me feel disgusted… ugh, From, they never disappoint.
