My turtle 'n poke build just beat Godrick on the first try. My +3 wolves died before the halfway portion of the fight, so it was all turtling and chugging health pots. Came within a cat’s whisker of dying twice, but at level 42 he was do-able for me.

Generally speaking, what’s the consensus on the overall best summons to use for most fights?

What I like is that I can use the horse, stealth, and chutzpah to explore, without undue trauma. I can usually get my runes back, or if I play my cards right (keep the things that are worth X runes but don’t count as cash and thus don’t drop on death, use my loose cash to level up when possible) I can even ignore the 65 runes I left somewhere. The game at least lets me get out of combat trouble a lot of times, in sometimes hilariously frantic ways.

I decided to go as far North as I could. I’m still only level 25, but you can go a long way North.

Booting this up for first time on PS5. Is anyone playing in on that platform? If so, did you choose quality or performance mode?

Also playing an Astrologer, and got the meteorite staff and the spell that comes with it. However, I also focused on getting my dex to 18 (even though that doesn’t make sense for a mage) so I could use the switchblade I found, and having a blast with the combination of both! Soften them up with magic, then beat the (last) shit out of them with the switchblade (which is, IMO, just plain awesome) . Also works great on a horse!

That being said, I am indeed going to focus on Vit for a while now, because the starting shield definitely sucks (I have a better one, but it’s heavy), and I am not a dodge/roll pro yet…

Currently in a courtyard full of monsters that pose a bit of a problem because there are so many. Individual, they are fine, and with magic I can take them down easily, but then I run out of blue potions (and I have a sneaking suspicion that the one on top of the mound of bodies (that I haven’t engaged yet) is a boss-type… Still: gracepoint nearby, so I will enjoy figuring this out!

I’m not playing on PS5, but Digital Foundry has a video out that says the best move is to download the PS4 version on PS5. That seemed to be the suggestion upthread as well. Failing that run the PS5 version on PS5 in performance mode.

I’m running it in quality mode on my ps5. No issues at all. My brother and has friend same story. But we’re not picky about frame rates.

Those suggestions from @Pedro and @scharmers for Magic users look great. Does anyone have suggestions for melee players? I’m mostly doing okay one-on-one, but have serious problems when taking on multiple enemies. Particularly with three or more, I seem to get swarmed, backed into a corner, and destroyed.

Use some sort of range weapon, bow, cross bow or throwing knives. Throwing knives are easy to craft. In most cases you can kite one enemy at a time.

Damn, this thread is over 2,800 posts?!

I will try to be as least annoying as possible, but I will probably ask questions that have already been asked so my apologies. I’m well versed in the Demon’s Souls remake and the intro seems carbon copy to it. So is starting off naked (wretch) a viable option, or not smart in this game? Seems you’ll end up with the most points in the end going that route.

Is Jack of all trades doable? I know it really wasn’t in Demon’s Souls.

That being said, for a sword dude, which class is best and same question for magic user?

Is it OK to ask which way you all have found to be the most fun? In what class?

My Dex/Int Samurai has a +3 Longbow that I use to soften up or thin out crowds. The Uchigatana also swings wide to hit multiple duders.

I’m looking into crafting crystal darts for my Vagabond or using one of the rando surplus crossbows I have laying around.

That was GREAT advice and you’ve got me re-energized for getting back in there. I’d seen advice for Astrologers to put all the points into Intelligence to get my spell power up, but yeah, I can see that my wimpy Astrologer needs to be able to take more hits.

Yeah, I’ve discovered that I can ride right through groups on my horse, like the ones manning that fire-catapult on the bridge. (I eventually came back the other way and played sneaky, since they’re all facing the other direction, and backstabbed most of them with my Morningstar Mace and spells and just took some out in one on one combat just to see if I could. I could.

I never tried the Arc spell, but I did when I heard a guy asking to be rescued and there was a big mob of zombie-ish bad guys. That was COOL!

Wretch - yes, it’s easier than ever because the open world gives you access to so many items.
Jack - yes, the softcaps are more generous.
Starting classes don’t matter, they mainly reflect your starting items/spells. Stats too but you can easily turn a samurai into a mage should you choose to.

Is there any reason, early on, to not sell the gold runes early on to level up?

Ok I was not expecting those answers as I’m surprised Jack is doable. Is this a game people will play more than once to do other classes like Demon’s Souls?

Be careful riding horses around enemies with spears. This might be my pre-conceived notions biasing my perceptions, but I think there’s a particularly high chance of getting unhorsed around spear wielders.

That’s been my strategy. Soldiers manning fire-throwers or those ballista like spear throwers are really tough from the front, so ride dodging like crazy, and get behind them.

It’s not about classes, it’s about builds. Stats + weapons + ash of war + magic + other items = a build. Some of them are incredibly OP.

Personally I save them up and then sell them either when 1) I’m 80% to level up and don’t want to risk roaming about until I level or 2) when I run into a merchant and decide to buy something. I probably should keep a list of merchants with stuff I want to buy later, but I don’t — I know there’s a bunch of recipes I missed early on and no idea where the vendors are, so my new strategy is always sell gold runes and by recipes at any vendor.

You should download the PS4 version of the game. It never drops below 60fps and is the best quality experience.
