Hey, thanks for that! Very useful/interesting.
There has to be some kind of balance offset to the bleed weapons. I don’t know why you’d ever use a Longsword when the Uchigatana is right there. Is the Longsword faster? Does it break poise better?
I’ve been playing with my buddy who just got the game on a different character and I’m going pure STR+END, making a tank essentially. Great shield, giant weapon, fat roll. Embracing my huge stamina bar to block attacks. On the early bosses the heavy weapons break poise constantly. You can essentially stunlock bosses this way if you’re both hammering with it with the greatsword. I know that won’t continue, but it’s fun for now!

Different moveset, which is a huge deal to some people. For example Broadsword I think has a slightly different swing arc, and one of the followups comes from a different side than on longsword, which can really throw you off. Plus Longsword can scale with anything and has super low requirements, which makes it an ideal beginner caster weapon. Not to say that Uchi is bad though, it’s a fantastic weapon.

There doesn’t. These games have a long history of some weapons just being better then others, for PvE, anyway.
I’m still trying to get used to how short the reach is for the Moonveil Katana. Compared to the Twinblades and Spear I’ve been using, you have to be right in there, almost hugging the enemy in order to hit with the Katana. Most of the time I think I’m right next to them, but I miss because I’m not close enough. It will take some mental adjustment.
Nice video, very helpful. Thanks for posting it. And I love that that $#%^& spear dude caused you trouble–now I don’t feel so bad!

I guess my point wasn’t that I’m good, but that compared to melee some things seem much easier as an astrologer :-) I did die on my first bunch of attempts, but I felt like I could do it, where with melee I never felt like I was going to be able to get close enough to do damage and live - without a horse. Even with a horse it took a bunch of tries before I won.
I think I also took around 120 hours on the first game. My Steam time is more, but I probably had 20 hours or so where I had it running when I stepped away. Playing as a spell caster now makes it seem more fresh. I’m not sure if I’ll play at the same pace as my first game though. I started NG+, but wasn’t motivated to continue.

Yeah, same here…just trying to have a bit of fun with daggers. Maybe I’ll just beeline the plot and seek out the fun fights and ignore the rest.
Yeah, but as far as I can tell, swords (and others?) only hit once while you’re dragging them, and then again on the actual swing. With the flail, you can hold the trigger, roll up next to someone and just whack-whack-whack-whack-WHACK while spinning it. It’s glorious. Especially so with the bleed and frost effects stacking together (I have some sort of Frost Ash on my NF- not Hoarfrost, still haven’t fou d that one)

You just hit on something I didn’t understand. When I looked at what the ashes would do to my long sword, they both seemed to lower the amount of normal damage my sword would apply. I didn’t know if I was reading that right? Why would the normal attacks be gimped?
It’s a trade-off. It can lower overall base damage, but it can also increase the damage scaling from one of your stats. Like making a sword Keen could lower its base damage, but the damage increase from your DEX stat (rather than your STR) could then make up, or surpass, that difference.

I haven’t upgraded my strength yet, so that makes sense.

Hmm, I thought it was doing constant damage but I don’t do enough mounted combat to be sure. I kind of hate it, actually. :P
I can dig. The only reason I learned to like mounted combat was the flail, heh. Just can’t get the timing down with other weapons.
You’re making me want to dump 4 more points into Dex so that I can use that Nightrider Flail I have.
While I’ve learned all this info already, the video still ended up super helpful. I’m going to steal that trick of moving my potions to the quickbar. And blame you for the next 74 deaths until I get used to the new keybindings.
And the pause trick does work, you just needed to click Menu Explanation as well. A very awkward multistep process in the middle of combat, but it can be done.

It’s 100% worth it, especially if you put hoarfrost stomp on it. Absolutely killer weapon.

At which point you immediately want to find the means to duplicate the ash and put it on all your weapons. Because it is overpowered silliness!
Thanks! I swear I had it working at one point but I must have not fully recalled how I did it when I was doing the video. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
