I’m the same way, except with Dark Souls 2 I ran across a VERY comprehensive guide to building a mage step-by-step and I followed it to the letter. With how popular Elden Ring is, I kinda hope there are similar build-focused walkthroughs that will let me be a build tourist on a future playthrough.
In case anyone is interested in the old guide:

I watched The Green Knight last night, which is a film that assumes the audience has some familiarity with its source material (the 14th century epic poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.) I didn’t have any familiarity with it and as such the movie is probably the best modern film at capturing the tone and look of a Souls game: ominous desolate landscapes, a dude with a giant axe, rolling to escape hits, weird and unexplained but compelling vignettes. I liked the film, particularly in parallel with my Elden Ring obsession.

This will be a rite of passage for every Elden Ring player I think lol.

You should read the poem. Tolkien did a version, I think.

Yeah, the film intrigued me enough to maybe check it out. I did look at a Wikipedia summary and was surprised by how closely the film follows the poem, with just a few changes to the central storyline and some additional contemporaneous myths and happenings thrown in to fill in the gaps. And it is profoundly weird and obscure in almost exactly the way the Souls games are. Portentous stuff that you almost but not quite understand. Storytelling through tone and setting and oblique asides more than narrative. Etc.

DS 2 made it very easy to be sorcerer, although as in n all the games in the beginning you need to do some melee fighting. DS2 had consumables that made magic go a long way.

Gravity is always the deadliest boss.
I was in NYC Times Square this past weekend because we went to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Elden Ring ads were running on the big screens in Times Square.
When we came out of the show, the ads had changed to the new Gundam game from Bandai Namco so they were advertising more than just ER. Still cool.
This caestus run is off to a rough start. Margit is no joke. They deliberately made him difficult to ensure you’ve leveled up and you’re using all your tools. I finally wimped out and used summons. The fight is too annoying to really invest time in.
Reminds me of old Nioh HP-melting builds. The fun was seeing how overpowered you could get.

Is the fist fast, at least?
I only watched the first minute or two, but that’s very amusing.
The dual wield you get is nice but I’ve been charging R2 and doing jump attacks to get damage and stun.

Charging R2? Do you mean running at him and then hitting R2? Or charging it up somehow?
I’ve been wondering what a “charge” attack was for a while now.

You hold R2 until you see a charge animation…at least with my flail, and then jump and let loose. Not sure about other weapons.
With magic you can see the animation of like fire getting larger and then it’s ready to send!
Oh you can jump after a charge? 😮
You can charge spells? Holy shit. I’ve been missing out by only using the sorcery staff in my left hand I guess.

You can charge spells with either hand, but only certain spells. You need to read the spell description. For instance, fireball and lightning spells can be charged for increased damage. They visibly indicate when they charge. Some spells do additional things too, like allowing you to jump and they have a different effect. Again, should mention it in the spell description. Additionally, R2, heavy attacks can be held to do a charged attack. Jump attacks, running attacks, and charged attacks should all do more damage/poise/stun potential. Usually different animations too.
