If we get to air gripes on review scoring systems, I’ll be the old curmudgeon I used to be back when I used to write a lot and pull my pants up to my waist and shake my fist and declare how much I hate any numbers or letters scale for reviews vs, just the words. How many times did you have people vehemently disagree with your review of a game yet could not come up with a single line you wrote, they just hated your “score?”
OK, Elden Ring has just finished downloading on my PS5. Debating just jumping in vs, first looking up a couple of “Things I wish I had known before playing Elden Ring.”
I think it’ll be more fun for everyone if you just dive right in :)
Well, I guess it scales - I just did the same attack against the same enemy and it was 547 now. Definitely much higher than Saturday when I first got it!

somebody should have told me that you can add and remove Ashes of War without cost. I thought you were locked in until you add a new one and you lose the old one. So that’s why I was waiting to find a good weapon…
like the gems in DS. You added a sharp gem to improve DEX scaling and that was that, sharp gem was gone
Absolutely! But actually playing well, making progress, and avoiding unnecessary frustration won’t be possible unless you read this thread, at the very least. You’ll probably want to watch someone’s dumb video, too. If you can stomach that sort of thing.

May want to play the PS4 version on PS5 which is more stable 60 fps.
I think high dex dodge focused builds have always been the best builds… for people good at action games. I bounced of Sekiro really hard because it focused on the only play style I can never handle in these games.
Playing an Astrologer at the moment, and I defeated the second big boss! I’m really starting to love my build. I’m running with the Short Spear modded for magic damage. I love fighting with a spear. It looks badass, has great distance, and can attack while blocking! Combo-ing careful shielded melee and pokes with aggressive spell casting is doing a great job letting me stay out of having to master dodging, though it took me till like hour 10 to find this setup.

Somebody did! Maybe @Timex ? This thread moves pretty quick, though.

If there is one thing I hate in this game it’s Burial Guardians.
They look like something from a much shittier game, aren’t any fun to fight and are the most common mini-boss ever in that I’ve fought like 8 of the stupid janky-ass things. I loathe them. It’s to the point that I don’t even want to get to the end of a dungeon because odds are one of those stupid things is waiting for me there.
That, plus the catacombs and caves in general. Well, hate is a strong word. They feel like chalice dungeons, though thankfully much shorter. But there’s no joy in them. The chalice dungeons at least occasionally had an amazing boss fight that was good enough for the main game. Here they’ve all been annoying pushovers.

I’ve run into a couple that were decent fights, but they’re definitely the exceptions.
Of course them nearly all being literally the same boss, who also sucks, doesn’t help.
Hey this fast traveling worked. Thank you!
Well, I am still totally lost on this shit. So I have Barricade on my shield, Golden Vow on my sword. If I switch the sword over via a Y + RT, I can cast Golden Vow. A LT activates Barricade. So that’s all good, though cumbersome as a mofo to do in combat and neither buff is going to last thru a boss fight.
But I have no idea how to cast spells, like lightning spear. I’ve fiddled and fiddled and they remain greyed out with this sword + board pally. Please help, Qt3.
Edit: I quick google says I have to have a seal equipped, flip to it and cast, flip back to sword when entering melee.
I wonder if there might be Ashes of War that allow casting while wielding weapons? That’d be neat.

You mean I’m not some kind of amazing badass for taking them all down in one try so far? Nuts. The two demihuman…chiefs? I wanna say? were kinda tough, though.

If it’s like any other Souls game there is a good chance of a weapon that casts and odds are the casting would be it’s Ashes of War. Now if that Ashes of War was available to slap on anything… it would be pretty neat.
Odds are it’s scaling would suck compared to an actual casting implement though, so you’d probably still want to have one.
Regarding the shields thing, you guys might not realize that some shields have no skill attached. For instance, this wooden shield:
When I equip it, the ashes of war for my right-handed weapon is accessible with the left trigger. However, what if I equip this nearly identical wooden shield that has the Parry skill?
In this case, the right trigger will be slaved to the shield’s Parry skill. So unless you’re equipping a skill-less shield, either by finding it or removing its ashes of war, you won’t be able to use your weapon’s ashes of war.
You guys might already know all this, but it sounded like it was tripping some of you up upthread.

Everyone should do this. I have run this game on a PS4 Pro and on a PS5 using the PS4 version and it is a locked 60fps on the PS5 if you play the PS4 version and feels awesome. No framerate sluggishness at all.
