How I got the tree sentinel:

use the horse, luke

There’s some talk about it upthread.

It generally adds a new action you can do, which is manually activated by the left trigger on controller (look under controls options if you’re using keyboard).

The complicating factor is, the action on your left-hand item has priority. So if you have a shield with the parry action, you’ll use that rather than your newly-slotted sword action when you press the trigger.

To use the sword action you’d need to either two-hand the sword, unequip the shield, or stick the ‘null’ ash of war on the shield, temporarily removing its parry action.

Oooook. I recall reading about this sort of t hi big upthread but it made no sense until now that I’m trying to use stuff. More key/button strokes. Oh no.

Is there an image somewhere that explains how to read the weapon screen? eg what are the numbers in brackets, how does the scaling work etc.

I’ve been ignoring all of that stuff so far, I’m enjoying just exploring with no runes so there’s no real death penalty if I wonder “what is behind this door?” (usually death). But I’m starting to come up to areas where I need to level up if I want to progress.

I will try to explain it.

Weapons get a letter value based on the various attributes. Dec, Str, Int and Fth. Each weapon has a base damage with a + or - damage based on the letter rating/character attribute. So the more Str the character has the more the weapon benefits from the letter rating.

So far the weapons I have seen are D or C rated, although while S is best, the normal scale is A thru E.

The figure in () is how much stamina is used in using the weapon. The bigger/heavier a weapon is the more stamina it will use.

I am sure I made this seem complicated, and it can be, just use the comparison feature and pick the one that fits your characters strengths and your playing style.

Then there’s the question of magic damage, which is how I roll until I run out of blue Gatorade.

I found a B! Slowly working my way towards being able to use it, and I’m sure I’ll hate it as soon as I do.

Does a weapon scale off both stats, or just your highest? ie if it has a Str and Dex rating, does the scaling bonus blend from both my stats?

Both/all together.

Started a 3rd toon tonight, a prisoner spellblade using the twinblade weapon buffed with the glintstone armament spell. Saw it on YT, almost looks like a blue double-sided lightsaber. Ran around getting all the early stuff, probably won’t be a good build for my aged reflexes since there’s no shield, it’s squishy, and requires a lot of good dodging.

I was able to jump the crevasse to that southern island today and found some fun enemies to kill, also made my way to a mine where these weird bird people kept killing me. I get a bit further each time, so that’s fun. Love the discovery in this game.

I had just bumped my long sword to +2 when I ran across a boss that died quickly to my great sword. So I wasted 4 stones that really would be nice with the great sword.

I’m playing as Prisoner # 24601

Another small patch, not much in the way of notes

Should I be levelling both stats? Obviously it’s weighted based on the scale, but for a STR-DEX D-D weapon, does it matter if I level one or both stats? Is a stat score of 20/20 in both str and dex the same as a 10/30 split?

It kind of depends on your build - don’t waste putting points into STR if you are going mostly for DEX weapons, for example.

Also, there are gradiants within each letter grade - I have seen, for example, upgrading a Magic Katana from +3 to +4 (or whatever) take INT scaling from C to … C (but the C is blue, like it’s improving) and my Magic damage is going up 4 or 5 points. So it’s a higher scale, like maybe a C+? The point is, STR being a D and DEX being a D could actually be a D- and a D+ for all we know.

Anyway, if you put ANY point in a stat it will scale with the weapon. More points = more damage of course, so in the case of my current Katana STR is E and DEX is D and INT is a C. So I put most of my points in INT to improve the Magic damage, but I don’t neglect DEX because it improves spell casting speeds and fall damage anyway. I don’t put points in STR unless I want to meet a requirement for something, I’ll do a STR build next time.

Keep in mind that when you upgrade that Str/Dex weapon, it’s unlikely to increase both Str and Dex scales to the same degree, but favour one over the other.

And I think the letters are a tier, with the exact number hidden. So two Ds do not always give identical scaling.

Then there’s the Ashes of War, which can change the scaling on your weapon too. :)

Thanks.

Bloodstains work now… didnt last night or before…ps5.

Yeah they were working for me last night on PC, for the first time.
