I believe at this point you are going to already know if it’s something you’ll like or something you will not like, you don’t really need other opinions to help you form your own.

You can preload on steam. When 12:01AM comes around, the game unlocks and you start playing.

I believe that buying a game on release day in today’s gaming world is a pants on head decision for most titles.
But I firmly endorse this sort of behavior in others!
Nice one. That’ll be me so!
I can’t help but agree under normal circumstances - very few games would I get day one, especially with most games hitting some sort of sale within 4 weeks of release (and a patch or two), but some games (Skyrim, Diablo III) are exceptions for me.
I do enjoy letting others play games first though, that practice most recently saved me some cash in the case of Sword of the Stars II! :)
As far as I know, Steam-equipped games, either on disc or purchased and pre-loaded at the online store, contain all the game data. Pre-loads, however, must download decryption information.
Time to decrypt varies according to server load and apparently processing power as well. It can take several minutes, even under the best of circumstances, and it may stall and need a restart of the client. The decryption download is usually just a few megabytes.
The retail disc only needs a handshake with the authentication server (because its data is not encrypted) and whatever patches may be available. Time to authenticate is usually a few seconds.
Something about Tom’s post reminded me the last game I had to decrypt - Deus Ex 3, and it took almost 20 minutes to decrypt. Crazy.

You could have improved this time with a Hacking: Capture 5 aug.

Considering how many hundreds of hours I played Oblivion and FO3, I think Skyrim is a safe bet for me.
I pre-ordered.
I usually wait and let others pay full or almost full price. That way I get an inexpensive game with many of the bugs patched out or I avoid the game altogether when consensus says it sucks. But, not this time.
Ha! That made me actually snort, well played.

Actually, you’d think big releases would go more smoothly if everyone didn’t unlock at the same time …
I went and pre-ordered on Steam last night. I was going to try and get it discounted online someplace until I realized that I actually have the 11th off from work. No way I’m waiting around for UPS to show up around 4pm to start playing!
I went to get a Skyrim wallpaper to replace my BF3 one and while I was looking at the site I put the original trailer on. That thing still gets my blood pumping. Just over a week to go!
Same here. I took off work earlier in the year so I’m off all week until the 14th. I will have four solid days of Skyrim to make rabbit and bear popsicles.
Ugh. My son and I actually have it pre-paid for (along with the guide) at our local Gamestop. My wife is going to pick up our copies on her way home from work, but we wanted to avoid adding more burden to the credit cards, so we went with the local store option.
The problem is she won’t get off work until later Friday afternoon (Friday’s are late days for her as it is) but she also does grocery shopping on Fridays, so it’s going to be damn near 7:30pm before we get our copies, then we have to install them and such.
But I did take the following Monday off to make up for the late start… :)

! Oh, those sneaky bastards!
Any news if the game will be region locked on Steam?
I really wish that hadn’t been posted here. I would’ve liked to have stumbled across that surprise myself.
I have given up long ago about that.
People must spoil everything for themselves, and others.
