Makes you wonder how something like that escapes QA.

Maybe QA is busy testing TF2 hat DLC.
The screenshot in question is an entirely different level of spoiler and that was a dick move, no doubt. I already knew about it being in the game but I sure as hell hadn’t seen a picture of it before.
Is this still about the screen I posted? Really, a dick move? Fuck sake, its not as if I tried to purposefully spoil the game for anyone, and the image remained without spoiler tags for what, 5 minutes?

Actually I don’t care anymore but it was a good image.
Is he flipping off people that spoil stuff for other people?
Nah, he’s flipping self righteous pricks.

On the other hand: ipad map app inc, yay!
Just read sort of a bummer - it sounds like 90% of why you level up your skills while playing is just to meet requirements for the perks. So your one-handed weapon skill will grow as you use it but it’s growth doesn’t influence anything, or so a few people who have played it are claiming. You’d need to pick up the perks that increase damage and such to actually see more damage be inflicted, or to have your spells cost less or do more damage, etc.
Seems sort of lame, hopefully it will prove to be just a few unobservant whiners, or maybe a pre-gold (yar!) issue.
I kind of want an iPad now.
I’m curious–why is that a bummer, exactly? They have been pretty clear that it’s a perk-based system. Which, personally, has me VERY excited. I thought Fallout 3 had the best character system that Bethesda has ever made, and I said at the time that it would be really cool to drop the attributes and other garbage and have character advancement based completely on perks. And that’s basically what this is. Skills not directly influencing anything is like experience points not directly influencing anything–they are just a measuring stick for determining which perks you can buy. And that’s fine by me! Receiving microscopic changes to damage or whatever as a skill slowly goes up is as much fun as watching paint dry. Choosing perks is much more interesting.

The hardcover one looks really tempting now.
But… Amazon no longer has the hardcover for sale. What the heck?

Maybe they sold out of the hardcover, looks like the softcover is still available (blaerg). Thankfully I got my order in on time.
BN.com has the pre-order for the same price I have it ordered on Amazon for (currently 23.52), and it looks to be in stock (it’s available for pre-order anyway). If you have Amazon Prime though, I could see why that would be a deterrent from buying at BN.
Well, firstly Bethesda hardly created the Fallout 3 character system, that was an awesome system in '98 or so, they just made some tweaks to it and converted it into a first person perspective with VATS.
Secondly, I actually totally agree that the perk system and everything as we know it is MILES better than many other RPG systems, especially other TES games, so I’m with you there, man.
But I guess I thought we’d get the microscopic updates to our abilities and things through leveling up the skills themselves in addition to the perks. The perks sound awesome, and I knew they were much more important than the skills, but I did not realize the skills were only a means to level up.
Like I said, it’s a bummer, but it’s not a huge deal or anything.
I’m happy enough to plod along without the guide and just buy it a year or so from now. Why spoil the sense of discovery until I’m damn well ready to?
Well, nothing says you can’t get the guide and sit on it. I’m going to review the first part of it such as skill and character build thoughts while the game is installing, but I’m not going to look at it hardly at all once I start playing unless I have a specific question or get stuck somewhere. It’s just nice to know it’s there in a pinch.

Wow. I may have gotten the last one (I know - not likely).
I ordered mine at 3:00 today (Eastern).
Cool.
True, but they also greatly expanded the perk part of the system, with a lot more perks that you earn more often. Perks in the original Fallouts were more like what the name implies: cool extras. Perks in FO3 were character-defining, and that was actually a very cool direction in which to move.
But I guess I thought we’d get the microscopic updates to our abilities and things through leveling up the skills themselves in addition to the perks. The perks sound awesome, and I knew they were much more important than the skills, but I did not realize the skills were only a means to level up.
Well, like I said, I don’t really think that the microscopic ability increases were ever all that interesting, so losing them (and replacing them with a cool system like perks) works out to be a big net improvement in my book. I guess we’ll see how it works soon enough!
