Has Deslock posted a review yet?

Thanks for that, as I’m definitely going to need the wider FOV to help mitigate any nausea I might get from playing Skyrim with the default FOV.

It runs really well on my PC, much better than any previous Bethesda game. I haven’t experienced any micro stuttering yet and the FPS stays pretty consistent.

I’m also liking the UI now that I’m getting used to it. The key for me (har har) is to use the WASD keys for menu navigation.

Edit: I’m running an i7 920 stock, 12GB of ram, and an ATI HD5870.

Awesome, that’s close to what I’m running (i7 920, 6 GB ram, 6950 2 GB).

Whatever, TurinTurbitch

jesus, default fov 60. Thats unplayable, or like playing looking trought a carboard tube.

What the fuck is wrong with these game devs?

Those changes of the FOV seemed to be weird… like it wasn’t actually expanding the FOV, but just moving the camera further BACK.

This sounds vaguely familiar from Oblivion but I don’t remember how it worked there. I know the big problem was the option wouldn’t stick between level transitions and things. I think I just left it alone when I ran through Shivering Isles last month.

If it sticks now then at least it’s progress even if it looks strange. Same with rebinding direct interface keys.

That’s how FOV works. You can see more stuff right and left, but also more of the ground in front of you. That’s why playing at low FOVs is like looking through a cardboard tube–you can’t even see the ground in front of you without looking down.

Tilde (~) FOV 85 or whatever you want. I’m sure there is an ini fix as well but I haven’t bothered to open the file. Too fucking busy playing.

I guess? When I think about FOV, I think about it expanding the sides, rather than just pushing the camera further backwards.

If you’re pushing the camera backwards you’re not really expanding the FOV that much… you’re just moving where the camera is. If you just backed the character up, then it’s the same as the “new” FOV. That is, when you’re pushing the camera back like that, it seems like you’re essentially changing the location of the player in the world.

I guess it works by essentially shrinking the region that is supposed to be where the player is?

Oh, and archery is MUCH improved over Oblivion. Very satisfying.

And anyone who says this is only a minor improvement over Oblivion with regards to graphics needs their head checked. Sure, it doesn’t have TW2 level graphics but it’s also not a PC exclusive game and it’s an open world game to boot.

TBH, FOV settings don’t really bother me much but I did push this one up to 80ish @ 1920x1200. I’m just happy to be exploring a TES game again. Everything else is gravy.

Yeah, that’s pretty much guaranteed to make me motion-sick. What harm would there be in setting a default of 75?

But remember the default FOV is looking through a tube, so you’re not necessarily moving the camera back into the player’s head at first.

Except I swear I remember if you set FOV too high in Oblivion it screwed up how it rendered things (maybe the player character?) So there was an upper limit.

If people say it’s fine at 80 then that’s good enough for me. It doesn’t have to be ideal, just wide enough that I don’t notice it and break immersion.

It’s not pushing the camera anywhere. The camera stays in one place. Expanding the FOV lets you see more of your surroundings in every direction–to the sides, but also up and down. So you see more of the ground in front of you and the ceiling above you. Changing FOV is like zooming in and out with a camera. It widens and narrows your field of view, and can make things seem closer when you are zoomed in. But the camera doesn’t go anywhere.

What’s the FOV on the console version? I haven’t noticed anything odd on the 360.

It’s probably the same default (60) that it is on the PC. Which is really low, IMHO, but sometimes low FOV is less nausea-inducing on consoles, since you sit farther back from the screen.

Same as PC.

Everybody prefers a wider FOV, but it is much more likely to cause nausea in players. That’s my theory why all games use such a narrow FOV by default these days.

Edit: Dammit Ben, we posted simultaneously and you won.

Must be related to that. I did feel the need to expand the FOV on Battlefield 3 on the PC, but on the 360 I find the FOV to be just fine.
