Really? I always find myself feeling ill from narrow FOV because I have to look around so much more.
It’s actually the opposite–low FOV exaggerates motion, and is much more likely to induce motion sickness in players. Personally, I never felt nauseous playing any game, ever, until shipping games with low FOVs started to become common practice.
The main reason to use a lower FOV–especially on consoles–is that less to render = better framerates.

Well, you just contradicted your previous post. Personally, I find wider FOVs to induce nausea. I’m fine at 90 degrees, but much over that (competitive FPS deathmatch, etc) and I’m out.

I already mentioned it in the non-spoiler thread, but I figured I’d repeat myself here because people were asking a few pages back:
I am playing as a pure mage, and it’s entirely viable in this game. I have not killed a single thing with a weapon, and my Favorite Weapon on the stats screen is listed as “None.” It’s also utterly different than playing as a melee character, and I’m actually considering playing a second time through with sword and shield because it’s such a different approach to combat.
stusser: I should have been clearer. I meant that low FOVs on consoles are less nausea-inducing than low FOVs on a PC, not that low FOVs on consoles are less nausea-inducing than high FOVs.
But yeah, you can’t go too high on FOV, either, or you’ll start to get a fisheye effect. I can see how that might bother some people, too. I usually prefer an FOV of 90.

I’m pretty stoked! Starting this year – tomorrow, actually – the company I work for is giving us Veteran’s day as a paid day off! I’ll be getting paid to play Skyrim!!
I’ll second this comment. The UI is a huge improvement over Oblivion when using a KB+M even if it is still fairly controller-centric. The font sizes are actually reasonable too.
Any advice to playing a thief in this game? I wanted to try something different this time around, so it’s all a little new to me.
I get sneaking around, but does it have any use in combat? Can I backstab?
Speaking of combat, what should I be doing? Obviously, I’m not a warrior so I can’t really expected to go toe to toe with everything, so what do I need to do to level the playing field? Magic? Potions?
You could in Oblivion. I’d be baffled if it worked its way out of the game. My favorite way to murder in that game was to shoot dudes in the back of the head from hiding.
The perk tree for stealth had an ability that made stealth-dagger blows from behind do 15x damage.
There’s also a perk that gives you increased damage for shooting someone with a bow while hidden. So yeah, sneaking definitely has combat applications.
There are even backstab/throat cut kill shots, for that matter.
How is it running on the lower-end systems? I am supremely tempted, but I don’t want to waste $60 on a game that stutters unbearably.
Amazon shipped my CE order at 12:30pm via UPS, which won’t show up at my house until late afternoon tomorrow. Probably need to just disconnect from the internet before I’m consummed by jealousy over the next 24 hours.
The sys-reqs were hilariously low, but looking around the internet I mostly see people talking about how it runs on their quintuple-crossfired Hal 9000s. I’d also be interested to see a review of how it runs on an '87 Chevy.
Feel MY pain, John: my copy probably won’t get here until Tuesday. I’m gonna have to go on full media blackout which, given I’m posting in this thread, you can see how well that’s going.

I play Deus Ex when Dead Island comes out and complain loudly in that thread. Now I get Dead Island when Skyrim comes and and I plan to complain loudly in this thread.
Baaah.

Hell, I’m getting my copy tomorrow from Amazon, yet I’m tempted to buy the Steam version just so I can play tonight, heh.
But that would be stupid, so might just play next best thing until then… Oblivion.
I’m done with preordering on Amazon, since they can’t deliver on release day in Canada. My Skyrim CE is scheduled for delivery Sept 17-18th, which it’ll probably beat, but that’s still absurd and makes preordering useless. Canceling my order.

Lucky you. I’ve been out of work for almost 3 years. I’m waiting on a Steam sale next year.
