Skyrim runs much better for me than Oblivion ever did on the same exact hardware.
While looking a bit better? Great news.
They’ve abandoned Gamebryo. It’s not listed in the credits, though Havok, Scaleform, FaceGen and Face FX are. Creation Engine is what they’re plugging everything into now.
Creation Engine is just their name for “gamebryo with lot of shit rewritten”. But the underlying base IS undeniably gamebryo of Oblivion/FO3 variety.

Who gives a fuck what the engine is called. The game looks amazing and runs great on the PC.
Yeah, it definitely feels like Oblivion at its deepest core.
For me, I loved what I saw last night, but I do think that having Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls come out between Elder Scrolls games meant that the combat would be a general let down for me. It’s definitely better than Oblivion, and I like the perk system so far, but fantasy combat has had the bar set already and Skyrim falls pretty short of that bar at times
Overall, though, very good stuff. Only play for about 2.5 hours, but it took me about ten seconds once out of the intro to start wondering if I could scramble up that hill to see the view from the top. Gorgeous game when not looking at people or things up close (but no game really is at least on the 360). Has that in common with Red Dead Redemption, and I’ll take the grand vistas every time.

Haha, same. I put up my shield to block the blow but it didn’t help. I was cart wheeling across the landscape…
Come on guys, let’s move to the other thread if you’re already playing it.
Not so fast. You have a 6970 like me, right? HardOCP and I have encountered a weird jerky framerate feel in certain areas. The framerate sits at 60 fps but feels like it’s half that. And that’s with a single card. None of the normal settings affect it, but my guess is it’s some shadow/lighting thing that’s broken in the 6970 drivers. I’m almost tempted to try turning everything off in the .ini.
My biggest fear is ATI won’t fix it or even know it’s a problem. I’d like more confirmation from 6970 owners that they see it too.

I am playing it on a Q6600 (at stock 2.4ghz), 8gbs and a GTX560ti. I haven’t checked the actual frame rate, but runs as smooth as silk at 1920x1080 on ultra settings, including a few shadow/water .ini tweaks. Old engine, new engine… whatever. It is gorgeous.
One thing that bothers me from watching videos is that the enemies don’t seem to have any reaction animations when you hit them. This bugged me in Oblivion, too, but I figured they’d improve that here. The melee combat just doesn’t look like it has any oomph to it.
Enemies will react if you hit them hard enough. You can make them stumble back or stagger, or drop to their knees.

OK, wife is out of town this weekend, game is due Monday, I said screw it, ran to Walmart and they had PS3 versions but not XBox. So I looked through the PS3 versions, and sure enough, there was one 360 version - pity the guy who maybe hid it there to come back and get later! So I brought it home this morning and it is installing as I type. I’ll gift the Amazon one to my son.
Hmmm - I thought the bonus for the Amazon pre-order was a big map? But I see the Walmart version comes with a big map too. Is there a difference in the maps?

Playing on Very High with a couple of the previously mentioned tweaks.
It isn’t silky smooth, but it’s smooth enough(with some noticeable slow down at times), but it’s not particularly pretty. Water looks a bit shit, the ground/grass always looks like flat textures(which it is - but other games manage to make it look more lifelike). Characters animations are poor, and the characters never look like they’re actually walking on the ground. Oh, and the trees look worse than in Nehrim.
Thankfully, gameplay is fun so far but a graphical tour de force it is not.
If you have a slim I would suggest not installing the game to the HD as I ran into the low rez texture issue. My casting hand ended up looking like a texture skin from quake. Very jarring. Without the HD install I could actually see the details of my fingers and my sexy female high elf fingernails… The load times are not that bad loading from the disk but I hope Beth patches the texture load issue soon.

I have a q6600 and a 5850 and most certainly can’t run on ultra reliably. Maybe I should do another video card upgrade. I had mostly stopped upgrading until I can get a new system with faster CPU.
No, every pre-order was meant to get that map, at most retailers. I guess they’re just handing them out with new copies for as long as they have some left.

The 560ti is certainly faster but you have to take some of these subjective impressions with a grain of salt when they don’t include framerates.

I got the Amazon pre-order version (PC) and it came with a map made of some kind of heavy textured paper (I’m pretty sure it’s still paper), whereas I think the regular map that comes in most retail packages will be ordinary poster-style paper.

There are two different maps. Everyone gets the paper one, pre-orders get a burlap-like material one. But everyone should get a map.
