Controller question: Is there any use in trying to play with anything but an x360 controller? I have an old Saitek P880 controller which I’m almost positive won’t have the same number of buttons/bumpers as an xbox controller but since people seem to love controllers over keyboard/mouse…
Looks great.
I wish I was playing this on pc… so far on the 360 it looks mostly like brown on gray with the occasional grey on lighter grey.

Yeah it did reset for me after using fast travel again, but found this on the Steam forums and so far it’s working:
[B]Changing FOV (fDefaultWorldFOV thz to pyide)
Go to C:\Users[USERNAME]\Documents\My Games\Skyrim
Open Skyrim.ini, and search for [General] section
Add fdefaultfov=XX at the end of the section. (where XX is the FOV value you want to change to). For example add fdefaultfov=90
Open Skyrim.ini, and search for [Display] section
Add fDefaultWorldFOV=XX (where XX is the FOV value you put in fdefaultfov)[/B]
The extra step with fDefaultWorldFOV=XX added did it for me.

Whatever he did to increase the distance at which detail appears is the best part of the first screenshot. I find that this game has view distances that far outmatch the amount of detail that can fill it.

I had been avoiding some of these threads “just in case”. I figured to wait and see what everyone thought but with a nice review staring me in the face in the newspaper I broke down and read it and the guy loved it.
Based on the mixed reviews of Oblivion I wasn’t sure I would care for this. I still have possible mis-givings in that I find with most games there comes a point where I need a basic plot line to follow because side quests just seem trivial after awhile. Sure the world can be open ended but eventually I need a reason for being.
So how does this game look as far as the basic plot line?

I just caught a butterfly–heh.
Oh and giants…lol, go try to kill one just for fun.

I did try and died so fast it was a blur lol, a bit cocky I guess because that was right after eviscerating an Elf who attacked me because he thought I was going to turn him in for selling skooma.

Very good, so far. And I disliked Oblivion.
For PC version players having issues with performance, try going to your in-game settings and disabling the 360 controller (unless you’re using one). For some reason, this has had a dramatic impact on framerates for a non-trivial number of players.
For PC users not having performance issues, you can enable tree and rock self-shadowing for a noticeable aesthetic improvement outdoors.

Just a tip for PC players, if you’re experiencing occasional CTDs. I can often tell when the game is about to bug out and crash to desktop, because when I’m looting containers, and I hit my ‘loot all’ button, it starts putting my stuff in the container (typically gold pieces) instead of looting anything. If I persist in trying to pick stuff up, it crashes to desktop.
In these cases I’ve trained myself to exit the container, and then save before restarting.

So those of you who’ve deleted the install on the 360… Does it make loading times noticeably longer? If I have to wait 5 seconds longer every time I go inside somewhere, I’d rather just deal with an occasional fuzzy cow.
Steam shows playtime of 26 hours…which is accurate. And so far, game never crashed, nor did I experience any bug. I can’t believe how polished it is…now I am afraid upcoming patches are going to break something for me, like they broke VATS in Fallout 3.
I saw youtube video where someone compared quality of textures with and without install, and without install loading took about 25 seconds…which is insane, compared to 3 seconds on PC (and I assume installed xbox).
I had a hilarious giant-related glitch last night. Snuck up on one and shot him with an arrow, and he immediately ran me down, squashed my companion with his huge fist, and then smacked me so hard I literally flew straight up into the air like a ballistic missile. I was still climbing at a high rate of speed several seconds later when the third-person post-death view finally ended.
Later I saw a mammoth fall out of the sky and land with a thud directly in front of me. I was reminded of the whale scene in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
(I finally killed both a giant and a mammoth at the same time by dodging around some pillars at a shrine while pecking away at them with my bow. It’s nice to have an Elder Scrolls game that makes archery not only viable, but absolutely awesome.)
I had something this afternoon that was either a bug or me not understand some game system properly - my archery skill was a big red 25, when it was supposed to be a white 49. I think it may have happened after I contracted rockjoint, but it wasn’t healed by going to a shrine and curing disease. Couldn’t figure out what was causing it - there wasn’t anything super-obvious listed in the Magic section. It popped back up to 50 after I trained it up, so no harm no foul, I guess.
Otherwise: HOLY SHIT. I’m one of those dudes that was disappointed in Oblivion (until I discovered the Dark Brotherhood, anyway), but Skyrim fixes everything I didn’t like about Oblivion and then some. I actually find it more engaging than Fallout 3, and I played that for like 200 hours.

Check the tweak thread. We’re all up in that shit (current favourite tweak - SSAO. Oh, and fixed shadows, thanks be to the Daedric lords of not clawing my fucking eyes out)

saveini
Works for me. The saveini command saves any changes you make ingame to your .ini file
The awesome screenshots here have made me abandon my Xbox 360 game (3 hours played or so) and wait for a new pc copy.
It’s all your fault!
The real game doesn’t look that good, because those screenshots are using supersampling (rendering the game in very high impractical resolutions and the scaling it down) ;).
With everything cranked up incl. antialiasing it looks pretty close to Duncan’s screens.
No, but my excellent pc will still look better than the Xbox.
(And I won’t have to fight the wife over the tv, so win win)
