Random Skyrim thought:

Thank god for console commands (no-clip in particular). There must be something special about Nord females that makes them constantly get stuck in walls and set pieces, because I’m not experiencing this with other characters.

True but what if you are fighting multiple enemies that should be using different elements?

Yet it’s impossible to get any sneak bonuses. Honestly magic should get the same as bows or maybe more. I can play a heavy armor character and get sneak shots off with my bow just because it’s so far away no one hears me regardless of the noise I’m making.

Yeah happened to me a lot too, almost never happens with melee or bow. All these little details make mages that much harder and complex to micromanage. Mages really should have kill moves, I can’t tell you how many times I get those using melee vs a decently tough enemy that kills them in one hit.

I’m now level 21 with full Orcish epic heavy armor using swords and bows. Smithing is really powerful and easy to raise fast. I’ve died 2 times total (default difficulty) vs probably 30 on the mage to level 14. Magic seems to level a hell of a lot slower than melee or archery. After playing both I really think magic got short changed, hope some mods bring it back up to par (stealth bonuses, kill moves, more damage, etc).

I’m finding my 14th level mage weak as a kitten. I’m sure I could play her better, but I’m not seeing the major upside from being a mage.

It’s still a fun challenge of course.

I found some Heavy Armour Dwarven Boots fo muffling that allow to move silently in my Heavy Armour.

I think I’ve found out how to avoid these hard locks I’ve been getting at random (black screen, sound locks up, system resets). This program runs the game windowed but without borders, effectively emulating fullscreen mode.

While the game can still crash at random, at least now it doesn’t take Windows down with it!

… And voice actors, please.

Nah. All of this is just the effect of Type3 bodies mods.

Skyrim is going to be the sexiest game ever in no time :-D

I just hit level 17 and am still doing pretty well with my mage. I rely on a Flame Atronarch and Lydia to help out, but I can one shot kill many enemies with a dual lightning bolt. Dual casting destruction spells helps a lot for damage output. Lately I’ve been branching out into a bound sword for fun, though. Seems to fit my dark brotherhood membership for silent kills.

This is kind of bizarre, but I’ve found that guards are the single most convenient source of soul gems for when I want to go enchanting. Black Soul gems woohoo.

Use ice storm more! Usually you’ll fight enemies of a single type. For instance, if you go into a crypt you’re really only going to fight Draugs, who are weak to fire and resist frost. Hit them with more fire! Use a fire atronach!

If you hit a bandit camp, you’re really only going to be fighting humanoids, most of whom it isn’t worth the effort to sort out damage types for. Drop a snowman and blast em with frosties, problem solved.

I consider paralyze a sneak bonus. But yes these would be nifty!

Actually mages do have kill moves for their Destruction stuff if they take the perk. Ice will freeze something, basically paralysis. Lightning will just instakill when 20% hp is left. Fire doesn’t, but fire constantly burns people so v0v.

I have 90% cost reduction for destruction and alteration (slightly broke my house rule) meaning that all my skills are basically free. And if a fight gets rough, I pop a philter of destruction, which gives me +40% domage. Even at high levels on master, this is enough to kill things with a single dualfist blast.

It’s not quite the same as the melee types, but I don’t think other people are playing the mage the way I am based on the number that are unhappy with it. Seriously you have to dual fist every mage attack, it gives you a knockback and a damage boost.

Chain aoe stunning stuff with dualfist fireballs or icestorms might require juice, but the sheer number of status effects and stuns you can cause on a group is frankly absurd.

I’d like it if they boosted the damage or gave me the ability to enchant damage increase mods (so that I could have a dual enchant destruction cost reducer/damage increaser) but there are potions that do almost exactly that. And paralyze solves most of my problems.

You can always toss on some armor if you’re unhappy with the cloth armor playstyle, as far as I can tell there are no real disadvantages. You can even enchant armor with the various bonuses.

I have a full set of glass armor I’m thinking about enchanting into casting gear just for the halibut.

Once again - the way I get a Flame Atronarch is I have to find a spell book or something that has that spell? The only conjure spell I have is conjure familiar, and when I use that I just get a wimpy wolf. I’m at level 13 and have never seen how to get one of these Atronarchs so many people talk about.

Mind you that I have yet to play Skyrim (picking it up on a Black Friday deal). That said, you normally have to purchase or otherwise obtain Atronarch spells. Try various NPC wizards or guilds.

edit - quick googling turns up a couple of sources, but I won’t post them hear for fear of spoilers.

One Word: Wabbajack.

Go to a wizard and look at the books they have available. It will say “Spell: Conjure Flame Atronach”. Every Jarl’s court mage will have it because it is a low level spell. I especially recommend visiting the one in the swampy town. You can also go to Winterhold, visit the college and talk to the conjuration guy there.

You do need to have conjuration up to I believe 25 to find it, but maybe not. Merchants only start carrying spells when you are pretty close to the skill level for using them. Like, say, paralysis won’t show up until you’ve hit 75 in Alteration.

Also I’ve definitely answered this question like twice now!

I think I was hit with a potion of slow brain. ;)

Skyrim has a great game world. Too bad the servers are so empty :)

Useful, thanks (and Aeon). I think the problem is I’m not very focused and that’s disproportionately crippling with mages. I’ve got points scattered all over the place (though I do have dual fist impact) and my companion is the apprentice mage chick from Winterhold rather than someone tanky.

I’m going to persist though - I do get through, though it’s far from pretty. Might go pick up Lydia though - they kick you out of the college if you kill another student, and that happens fairly often (though always shortly before I die myself).

Have you set the executable to ‘run as administrator’?

PC MW3 was never going to be a popular/supported platform.

Oh, you will never lack gold if you have cabbages and potatoes.

I can “confirm” this partially, in that, when my sound settings are 24bit/192 the game crashes immediately after the bethesda video is played.

When set to 24bit/96 some of the game sounds are corrupted.

Currently playing 24/48 without any issues (so far).
