I like the fact that Bethesda recognizes the rights of gamers to have a cold, loveless marriage fueled entirely by passive aggressiveness. I demand that you immediately fill the house at least 1/3 full of empty bottles of your alcoholic beverage of choice, and perhaps track down a tank top and some soiled denim pants.

Could be because I’ve only spent my time so far in about 3 or 4 towns and their surrounding areas but in 32 hours I’ve only encountered 4 Dragons - seems like some of you are encountering a whole lot more than that.

ANd I don’t feel four is a lot considering I only actually fought 2 of them as one that I came across was already engaged by town guards and halfway dead and the 4th I just hid from and managed to evade.

I’ve only spent my time so far in two towns and two hamlets and I’ve been directly jumped by at least six dragons. I’m not fast traveling a lot at this point because I’m still filling out the map, so maybe that has something to do with it, but I’m pretty sure that one followed me all the way to Morthal during a fast travel, so maybe it doesn’t have anything to do with anything.

That’s not counting the ones I’ve deliberately sought out.

Do dragons only begin to spawn once you do the mission that gives you your first shout? Because I am level 11 and that is the only one I have fought, let alone laid eyes on.

I didn’t run into any until after that first shout pickup.

I believe the dragon spawning doesn’t start until after the first shout reveal.

I didn’t mean to put off the main quest this long, but my character just leveled at a dizzying pace. I am planning to focus on it for a bit, consequently.

Pure mage works fine, but as the game progresses it’ll be more effective to rely on Conjuration and/or use Illusion to handle crowds.

I think pure mage is a lot of fun, its just Destruction that’s a little wimpy compared to combat skills for multiple reasons.

There’s also plenty of mods that make Destruction more viable late game, if you’re on PC.

I assume you guys are talking about when you can use a shout? Because I picked one up right in the starter dungeon…

Well, that’s a word. I learned that word too. I haven’t gone to see the neckbeards yet, so I don’t know what the precise mechanics are, but I think I’ve gathered from the guide that shouts are made of words, and I’m guessing that I have to invest some of these dragon souls I’ve sucked out of them to make them go all good.

Oh - and this is random, but totally don’t necessarily sell those scales and bones. As I suspected, those are armor components. I think I only sold five of each before I had the sense to check and confirm that they actually did something. Granted, you’ve got to get your smithing to 90, but it’s theoretically the best armor in the game.

I’m level 45 and I have yet to seen an ancient dragon (just elder dragons). When do they start to show up? Is it purely a matter of how far you are into the main quest?

Yes, the game does say I’m still lacking a dragon soul to use that word. And shouts are made up of multiple words? Makes sense, I didn’t realize that.

At this point I don’t really plan to do any crafting or smithing or brewing or knitting beyond the basic necessities, but hey, who knows where I’ll end up?

I hate to be a spoiler nazi but I kind of wish I hadn’t heard of them before I encountered them in the game. That would’ve been an great surprise to see one land. I know they’re just a new name for the same model but the texturing sounds pretty awesome.

Assigning hot keys-- I had resigned myself to crappy controls on the PC UNTIL I got my soul trap spell…now I really need a hot key for that. I dug this up at http://www.reddit.com/r/skyrim/comments/m8tnk/guide_how_to_use_18_hotkeys_for_items_and_spells/

For this example I’ll use two swords, a shield, fire, and heal for our items/spells. First you have to favorite them by pressing F in the items/spells menus. Then you press Q in game to bring up the favorites menu. Now I love dual wielding so I’m going to L-click and R-click on the sword to put on in each hand, then while I still have the sword selected if I press 1 that assigns that combo to 1 key any time I press it I’m now dual wielding swords. Now comes the tricky part the sword is labeled with a 1 so I can’t assign another key to it, but if I put my shield (or any other weapon) in my left hand and press 2 (while that item is highlighted) it will give me a sword/shield combo when ever I press the 2. I can continue this by equipping the heal and pressing 3 and then fire by pressing 4 (while keeping that item highlighted). Want to add a great sword or bow select it and press your desired key.

Does this sound correct- cannot try it until I am at home–I haven’t seen this in the threads- but if it is 10 posts up feel free to flame me.

That doesn’t work in the way that you want it to work, because a) hotkeys are bugged in that using two of the same item will eventually make the hotkey disappear and b) dual wielding two different weapons doesn’t work with hotkeys because the hotkeys attempt to place all weapons into your main hand.

Pushing a hotkey twice puts it in the off hand. So to dual wield two weapons, one set to “1”, (off hand) and one to “2” (main hand), push “1” “1” “2”

My current combat flow is this:

  • Hit 1: pull up ironskin in left hand. Cast it.
  • Hit 4: pull up orcish war axe of fire in right hand.
  • Hit 2: pull up bound blade in left hand. Cast it.

If I don’t have a lot of piddly empty gems, I will hit the favorites key instead, which pulls up the favorites menu. Considerately, Bethesda leaves the cursor where it was the last time you pulled up said menu. That is always on the Flawless Steel Axe of Frost, so I just click it and hit the favorites key again. Pretty minimal interruption, no pixel-hunting.

Of course I would prefer if hotkeys set both-hand configurations, or at least could be set up to allow left-hand weapon selection, but this is pretty manageable.

Keeping some armorskin spell up all the time is the best way I know of to level Alteration (aside from $$$training$$$). Keeping bound blade up really helps level Conjuration like crazy, too. Having an atronach AND a bound blade is the best of all, of course, Conjuration-wise.

This was all lies.

I will definitely try that, thanks. Only problem is I’m out of hotkeys, but I’ll find a way…

Uhh… no, it doesn’t. Pressing “1” twice puts your weapon into your main hand, and then puts it away.

You’re confusing how spells work with how weapons work.

Bethesda clearly thought hotkeys through for spells, but didn’t apply the same philosophy to dual wielding weapons at all.
