Well said, @malkav11.

I’ll also add the other issue with magic in Skyrim is you don’t really need it the same way you do in most other RPGs, as the game is all about choice in forming the character and experience you’re looking for. So you won’t often find yourself in a situation where you’ll be thinking, “Oh, I need this one specific spell” because of game design.

So mods which add a bunch of spells are largely about adding ways to flavor your gaming experience. Or if you will, vanilla Skyrim gives you salt & pepper but large spell mods give you hefty spice racks. The way I tend to approach it is I have a mindset where I’ll be facing a set of enemies or a boss particularly vulnerable to ____, so I’ll have some spells ready for that.

There are some interesting specialty spells in there. Like one of the mods adds a spell that does basically nothing if you’re currently observed, but should connect with enough damage to kill a regular NPC if you aren’t. I had some fun trying to accomplish Dark Brotherhood assassinations with that despite having like 15 stealth skill. Or there’s one that if you cast it right before you jump off a cliff or something, you take no damage. I hate fall damage, so I love that spell.

The perk overhaul mods (such as Ordinator or the more light weight Vokrii, which I use) add some oompf to the magic system. There are also a myriad of mods designed to improve play as a spellsword type or manage hotkeys and the interface. I’ve not however gotten around to trying any of them. I’m a bit of an outlier though - there are plenty of people and mods that aim to turn Skyrim into a kind of Dark Souls action-orientated game. I’m not now nor ever have been an “action” gamer so to speak, so I’m content with the fighting system as is; but I have added mods that increase enemy levels and fixes scaling. Just started a new play through and it’s already noticeable (bandits and draugr e.g. are the same or higher level than me. Playing on legendary with two followers and it’s challenging enough - but without those followers I’d be dying … a lot lol.)

Speaking of new play throughs, I ended up taking a couple days adding and patching new mods and disabling others but ended up with a total of 176 and will probably be adding more later on. I think I end up spending more time managing mods than playing. Haven’t even made it to Solitude yet to start the LotDB quests (although I have a couple of them referenced in my journal and found my first archaeological site.) Love the new items added by supporting mods too (I used the patch list to decide which ones to add.)

Oh and I’m using Inigo for the first time. I must say, the hype is not over stated.

You’ve put a grin on my face :)

Arise!

I just finished all the modding for my SkyrimVR replay. I tried this mod last night a bit, and it seems very promising for VR. Basically between a custom shout and two spells (“draw” and “ward”) it replaces a bunch of stuff based on context. You cast “draw” at either the living/a corpse/environment, and you “attune” to the element and draw turns into a lightning/ice/fire attack spell. Casting the shout while you have an element attune does some other stuff (ie. rune trap/ethereal) The ward uses stamina, blocks both physical and magical and heals when not in immediate combat. There’s some combo system when using different elements etc. Pretty neat.

The plethora of mods for Skyrim makes me less, rather than more, likely to reinstall. But a BotW-style glider might do it…

Skyrim may not be the game for you. If it isn’t dipping below 30fps on your 3090 or crashing randomly because of the 300+ mods you’ve installed, is it really Skyrim?

You mean 1300 mods of couse, which is what a wabbajack installation like Elysium gets you! Which, incidentially, is one of the most stable Skyrim experiences I’ve had. 60 hours and 2 crashes.

Wabbajack is a cheat code!

That’s a pretty damn cool little read. I’ll probably be throwing in Skyrim again soon anyway, so I’ll be sure to follow a fox when I see one.

I tried (for a third time) to get into Morrowind on the XSX, but I just can’t do it. I thought I’d appreciate the slow pace of things, coming off the frenetic, epic space opera of Mass Effect Trilogy, but the game is just too…clunky (?) for me to get really engaged with it. And it’s all on me, I know. I just can’t get past the useless map, the journal, the inventory mgmt, etc. I’ve been spoiled by Oblivion & Skyrim, plus the Fallouts.

Another good story. Damn bees…

Haha, how long are they going to be able to milk this game? Sheesh.

wonder what new bugs they’ll throw in that modders get to fix

Sweet. I had just started on Series X last month, just reached Whiterun and then left Whiterun on the main quest. I guess I’ll put it on hold until November.

It’s literally a meme now. They’re leaning in.

I say this as someone who put hundreds of hours into Skyrim and Skyrim SE, not counting the many spent tweaking and updating the several hundreds of mods installed; if Bethesda is that hard up for cash, maybe they should do a remastered New Vegas instead of this half-baked idea.

(old but new to me article)

Yes, one woman accused him of straight-up rape and the other harassment. Neither filed charges, likely as it was too late. Bethesda dumped him shortly thereafter.
