So far, I get a lot better results with the guys that let you change one roll to the other (the mob guy, the reporter, and the old professor). The problem with the "pick extra items" guys is that their powers don't work unless they're winning. It's easy to get to a point where they lose all their items and can't win any more tasks. Also the student's "solve multiple tasks with the same conjure" power is surprisingly effective.

I've come to the conclusion that because it's a dice game, you're cheating if you don't take random investigators!
